The Doctor didn’t have to wait long before the robots came along. One looked like an ordinary Maine Coon. The other like an ordinary young woman.

“Come out, intruder,” the latter said in a normal sounding voice.

“I’m coming out,” the Doctor said.

“And the other two,” the robot woman said.

“What other two?”

“The girl, and the boy with the Naked Mole Rat.”

“Oh, them.” the Doctor said. “They’re not with me.”

“They followed you in.”

“Wherever they are, they are closer to whatever device is interfering with the electricity in Lawndale.”

“It isn’t something that’s dangerous,” the robot said. “And you are?”

“You can call me the Doctor.”

“The Doctor…” the robot considered.

“And your name is?”

“Kaelyn.”

“Kaelyn,” the Doctor considered. He wasn’t sure that she was telling the truth.

“What’s happening, Amiga?” Jane asked.

“The Doctor, again,” Daria answered.

That was all Jane needed to know. “Gotcha.”

Daria then filled her in on what was happening, including the portal to Middleton.

“I see,” Jane said when Daria had finished.

“We need to look out for unusual activity.”

“Of course.”

Quinn met her friends. “Quinn!” Stacy Rowe called out.

“Hi, Stacy,” Quinn said warmly.

“You were with that guy again, weren’t you?” Sandi Griffin asked in an icy tone.

“Sandi!” Quinn cried out. “Not right here…”

“And why not?” Sandi asked.

“I don’t want the whole school to know!” Quinn retorted.

“I guess not,” Sandi said.

Nina, Octavius and Investigations
Nina thought more about the rescue. There was certainly more to it than that. She then checked the console and saw that the TARDIS didn’t see anything unusual in that data. ‘I’ll look over it this evening,’ she thought.

She went straight to the Bugle.
Betty showed Nina the room where the archives were stored. “That is a lot,” Nina said, seeing that there was only a small amount of walking space in that room.

“Yes,” Betty said. “The Bugle was founded early in the last century, and Jameson bought it nineteen years ago. He wants you to build the archive in reverse.”

“So, literally backwards?”

“Yes.”

“I can do that.”

“Good,” Betty said in an encouraging tone.

She soon, got to work. Some of the information was interesting.

On Baffin, Aialah started her duty shift. As she entered the Bridge, she could see that Alpha was reading something from a PADD whilst sitting in the Command Chair and Eta was looking at something on Science Station 1. She also saw the Pilot make minor course correction. She looked at Earth’s Moon on the viewscreen. 'Quite interesting that it's tidally locked,' she thought, as those of her home weren't, although their rotations were in resonance with their orbits. ‘Maybe because it’s so big relative to the planet?’ she considered.

Alpha put the PADD down. “Good morning,” she said.

“Not sure why we have synchronized the shipboard time to American Eastern Standard Time,” she groused. Earth rotated a couple hours a day slower than her world.

“Given that Nina's there,” Alpha said.

“Right,” Aialah said. She went over to Eta. “You have found any further information?”

“Not much. It seems to have been classified by the National Security Agency,” Eta answered as Aialah sat at the other Science station.

“I see.”

“Uh!”

“Uh?” Aialah asked.

“It seems an organisation called the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division is also involved. But I can’t find much on them either. Just the fact of their existence. Whatever data they have, it must be stored offline.”

“I’ll help you find out.”

“Thanks.”

Somewhere... )
Daria awoke early. She wondered what was happening with the Doctor’s investigation. She looked out at the TARDIS, before wandering over to her closet.

The Doctor was still stumped, the TARDIS was still parsing the data and Peter was bored. There was a knock at the door. “Has to be Daria, Quinn should still be asleep,” the Doctor said. He clicked his fingers, opening the doors. “Good Morning, Daria.”

“Any progress?” Daria asked.

“Not much,” Peter said.

The Doctor than explained what they had found so far.

‘So, Peter was right,’ Daria considered when he had finished.

“Yes,” the Doctor answered.

“I’ll tell Quinn that when she gets up.”

“Sure.”

Kim and Ron had found a small café in Dega Street. “This street seems a little run down,” Ron commented.

“It’s not that bad,” Kim said.

“I suppose…” Ron said. He paused before adding. “Compared to some places we’ve been.”

Kim looked in her copy of the Sun Herald. “There’s not much happening. Maybe a radio station would be a better idea.” The café was playing music, but she wasn’t sure if it was from a radio station or a CD.

“Maybe we should have asked Wade to dig up more information on this period,” Ron groused.

“I’m sure he already is,” Kim mused.

“Good point.”

Daria saw Quinn enter the kitchen. )
Complications in New York
“One Hour to Earth,” the ENH reported.

“One hour exactly?” Alpha asked.

“Yes,” the Pilot answered, exactly as he had 23 hours earlier.

“I’m ready to get there,” Alpha said.

“I know you are.”

Aialah was in the Mess Hall. She had had breakfast earlier, but was now reading an overview of Earth as it was in the 20th Century. It seemed that most Earths the Baffin crew had encountered were rather similar until then, with most of the divergences in history between the universes occurring during the course of that century.  She wasn’t sure why that would be the case, considering that other star systems varied widely. Earth was a constant. She sighed. She wasn’t sure she was ready to be exploring Earth in whatever state it might be.
But she was going to try, so as to contribute to the crew of Baffin, such as it was.

“Approaching the Sol System now, Alpha,” the ENH reported.

“Full scan,” Alpha reported.

“Aye,” Nina said.

“The planetary positions match to Mid-August 2004,” Aialah reported.

“And the radio transmissions?” Alpha asked.

“15th August 2004,” Aialah reported.

“Prepare to drop out of warp and hide behind the moon,” Alpha ordered.

“Aye,” the ENH said.

“I haven’t a clue,” Peter said.

“There isn’t much data here,” the Doctor said. “He turned to Peter. What do you know about Middleton, Colorado? That’s where it leads, a few years in the future.”

“I’m not familiar with it,” Peter answered.

“I guess we have to deal with this on this end,” the Doctor said.

“I think I could have a closer look at that thing,” Peter decided.

“Sure,” the Doctor said. “We can go back there rather quickly.”

“Let’s go,” Quinn said.

“Wait!” Daria said.

“What?” Quinn asked her sister.

“It’s four twenty,” Daria explained. “Sunrise is in two hours,”

“Plenty of time,” Quinn said in a dismissive tone and with a wave of her hand.

“I’ll make sure she gets to school,” Peter said.

“Good. Because I need more sleep,” Daria said with a yawn.

“I’ll meet you at breakfast,” Quinn said.

“That is really none of your business!” the Principal exclaimed, glaring at the artist girl.

‘No doubt Jane’s a trouble maker,’ Daria thought.

Lawndale High School; November 9th; 11:39 AM
The imminent arrival of the Modelling agents was already affecting the curriculum. At least that was Daria’s thought on the matter as Mrs. Bennett went on about how the fashion industry used marketplace psychology.

“…The business insures its own survival by training consumers to focus on arbitrary styling distinctions, rather than quality and durability.”

She looked around again. She then spotted the other time vehicle and saw the young woman who had travelled back in it. She didn’t recognise her. ‘Maybe Danae shares it with her,’ she thought.

The Doctor and Quinn were halfway back to the Morgendorffers’ house, when they heard a strange noise. “What was that?” Quinn asked.

“No idea,” the Doctor answered. He took out the sonic and ran a scan. “Inconclusive! What do you mean ‘inconclusive?”

“What’s inconclusive?” Quinn asked.

“It’s unsure if the person was human or not.”

“You mean they’re a hybrid?” Quinn asked.

“Yes, of a sort.”

“Of a sort?”

“Mostly human, with some genetic engineering,” the Doctor clarified.

Quinn nodded in understanding. “Are they getting closer?” she asked.

“No, they’re keeping their distance. But I think they’ve been following us the past few blocks.”

“But not from the portal?”

“No,” the Doctor answered. “Whoever they are, they’re certainly from this side.”

“So, we keep going?”

“Yes.”

Kim, Ron and Rufus arrived back at the portal. )
