Peterson then entered the café in plain clothes and saw the partners. “Just the people I want to see,” she said.

“Have you heard more about the critic?” Quinn asked.

“I’m afraid not,” Peterson said. “In fact, another of Lawndale’s radio personalities has gone missing.”

“That isn’t good news,” Daria responded.

“And who was this?” Joey asked.

“Oliver Langford. He’s Z93’s general critic,” Peterson said.

“So, he disparaged the play to?” Daria asked.

“Actually, he praised it,” Peterson said.

“But he mentioned it,” Quinn pointed out.

“More than once,” Peterson said.

“So, it may be someone who doesn’t like the fact that the Historia is being run by teens,” Daria said.

“So, Beck isn’t out of the woods yet,” Quinn said.

“Or it might be a competing theatre,” Daria said.

“That has been proposed,” Peterson said. “Not only the others in Lawndale, but also in Oakwood, Middlebury, and Cumberland. I’ll reach out to my friends in the departments there.”

“Probably need a private investigator to check out the other towns,” Daria said after Peterson had left.

“That would be expensive too,” Quinn said.

“I’ll talk to Mom about it tonight,” Daria decided.

“You mean, Peters, the guy who found Jenna’s mother?” Quinn asked.

“Yes,” Daria answered.

“I’d say, go for it, Daria,” Robert said.

“Normally I’d say wait,” Joey said. “But there’s a lot riding on this. Go for it.”

“So, where are you headed?” Daria asked. “I could drive you?”

“The Historia at first,” Anna answered. “Apparently, SpiderGirl is often on the roof.”

“I have heard that,” Daria said. “Probably because it offers a good vantage point. I have been up there, looking at the town, myself.”

“The Historia too,” Ben added.

“Just no making out while I’m driving,” Daria said.

“Um, we don’t do that,” Anna said. “The hypochondria.”

“Anna!” Ben said as they came up to the parking lot.

“Sorry,” Anna said, as she kissed her boyfriend on the cheek.

Ben rubbed the cheek.

Daria sighed as she unlocked the Lexus.

Quinn and Brittany left the school grounds before changing to SpiderGirl and Ninja Talon respectively. They then went in different directions, with SpiderGirl heading southwards, to patrol the downtown.

Daria parked in the parking lot behind the Historia. “I didn’t really know this was here,” Anna said as she got out.

“It’s one of those hidden places that people don’t think about,” Daria said.

“Like in those stories you like, only more mundane,” Ben said.

“That makes sense,” Anna said.

“I’ll show you the backstage area if you want,” Daria said.

“What about the apartments?” Anna asked.

“They’re hardly used, and therefore boring,” Daria responded.

“Oh, right,” Anna said.

Daria and the couple entered the backstage area and saw Quentin measuring something near the stage. “Anna, Ben, this is Quentin Beck, the new special effects person.”

“Hi,” Anna said.

“Hi,” Quentin said.

“What are you doing?” Daria asked.

“What does it look like?” Quentin asked.

“I don’t think anything needs to be done back here,” Daria said.

“I need to know what I’m working with,” Quentin said.

“Draw up a plan for what you want to do, then bring it to Quinn and I before the rehearsal tomorrow,” Daria said.

“Sure thing,” Quentin said.

“A little suspicious,” Anna said as they entered the theatre room.

“I agree,” Daria said. “I’ll tell Quinn later.”

Quinn arrived at school not long after. She began hearing rumors of Jamie’s claim as she headed to Homeroom. ‘What is Jamie doing?’ she groused to herself. ‘He wouldn’t have found the off switch or the Solarium itself if he hadn’t joined me on the search!’ She wasn’t sure what to do about his bragging other than to insist on the truth.

Conflicting claims would spread through the school as the day went on.

At lunch, Jamie was eating with Elly and Freya. Joey saw that and turned to Jeffy Brown-Mercer. “We need to do something about this?”

“But how?” Jeffy asked.

“We’ll go to Quinn,” Joey said.

“Or Daria?” Jeffy asked.

“Quinn first,” Joey decided.

“Sure.”

“And so, it’s annoying,” Quinn said. “But I have been insisting on the truth. That I was there at the Solarium and he wouldn’t have been there if he hadn’t come with me.”

“That’s all you can do,” Tori Jericho said.

“I know,” Quinn said.

“Quinn?” Joey said as he approached.

“Jeffy?” Stacy Rowe asked.

“It’s about Jamie,” Joey said.

“He’s bragging that he was the teen investigator that stopped the brownouts,” Jeffy said.

“I know,” Quinn said with annoyance.

“But what can we do about it?” Joey asked.

“Also, it seems he’s going after Elly,” Jeffy said.

“I’d say let him,” Stacy said.

“What?” Tiffany Blum-Deckler asked.

“So, he wouldn’t annoy Quinn,” Stacy said.

“He hasn’t been doing that lately,” Quinn pointed out.

“Nor have I,” Joey said. “I mean we have gone on dates, but it’s been more as friends, especially given we’re partners in the Historia.”

“That’s a good point,” Stacy said.

“But Jamie?” Jeffy asked.

“I guess you can ask Daria,” Quinn said. “I’m at a wits end.”

Excerpt from: Mirror Mirror – Jade Survives
Jade Coigley returned to the room that would in her time be Jo Tiegan’s room. ‘Or it will no longer be,’ she thought as she came up to the Mirror. She hesitated, despite the old man saying that she had to come back straight away. ‘I could look around and then go back.’

Excerpt from: The Engineer and the Time Lady
“Not much there,” she murmured. She wandered over to the Engineering station. She checked the status of the ship. ‘Everything’s in order.’ She went back to the command chair and restarted her Klingon opera playlist.

“Klingon opera again?” the Pilot asked.

“It’s grown on me.”

The turbolift opened on Deck 3, where Aialah’s quarters were. ‘And Nina’s quarters are on a different deck!’ she thought again. She shook her head. That wasn’t what she wanted to think about. ‘I miss home, although it was dangerous to stay.’ She was thankful that Nina had brought her to the Baffin, really. As she walked to her quarters, she realised that she was quite tired. ‘Alpha had a point!’
The door opened and she went in and grabbed a PADD on the table. “Computer, access Alae-Lakria database, load a random short story about superheroes that was published within the last 20 years.”

“Affirmative.”

The story loaded and Aialah began reading it.

Back on the Bridge, Alpha went to one of the science stations.

“Something?” Eta asked.

“There are still a lot of questions about this Earth.”

“And some of the other Earths the Baffin’s been to?”

“Yes,” Alpha said as she brought up the data from Arendelle again. ‘I know there isn’t a match with this Earth.’ She then called up the information on the Alae-Lakria of Alaiah’s time.

Excerpt from: Mysteries of Aurora
“It’s a big part of what I’m interested in, but not everything,” Freya said. “For instance…” she then told them about the mystery of the missing Renaissance artworks.

“That’s still about art,” Anise said.

“I guess so,” Freya responded with a giggle.

“It’s a bit strange,” Leia considered.

“That is one reason why I’m going to investigate,” Freya said.

Olivia stretched and looked at the time.

Excerpt from: Spider Quinn
“I agree there, and I think Anders is getting in over her head.”

“Most likely, and as far as her motivation goes, she wants to use her powers for good, to help people. Isn’t that enough?”

“I agree,” Quinn said.

“I’ll talk to Jamie about that, as well as the article,” Ted said.

“Thanks, Ted. I’ll go to Ms. Li now.”

Quinn entered the office to find the principal busy with paperwork.

“Ms. Morgendorffer?” she asked.

Quinn placed a copy of the Lowdown on her desk. “I’m sure you’re aware of the article quoting me saying something about Kevin Thompson.”

“I knew you would come here today, once I read the Lowdown.”

“I’d like you to allow Ted to print a retraction.”

“That is a massive step, Ms. Morgendorffer. Are you sure?” Li asked.

“Of course I’m sure.”

“Give me a reason why?”

“Because there are likely false rumors spreading and Daria and I might tell my mother that you’re allowing libelous articles to be published.”

The Principal looked annoyed. “Fine! I will allow Mr. Dewit-Clinton to print a retraction. As far as I know, the Lowdown has never printed a retraction before!”

“There’s a first time for everything,” Quinn said as she turned to leave.

Angela thought after Quinn left, and grabbed the Lowdown. She re-read the article. ‘I can see how that can be misinterpreted,’ she thought and switched on the PA system. “Ted Dewit-Clinton, please report to the Principal’s office.”

Daria heard the principal call Ted to her office as she got her food. ‘I guess Quinn managed to get her to print a retraction,’ she thought.

She approached the usual table to find Jane Lane and Sandi starring daggers at each other. ‘But what else is new,’ she thought. Harry wasn’t there yet and she saw that Tania Ashworth was sitting with her usual friends on the other side of the cafeteria.
When Stacy has to complete an essay, she finds that Sandi's behavior towards her is getting worse. Will she have to leave the Fashion Club?

“Ah!” Daria called out as she reached the ground a little quickly.

“Sorry,” the Enigma said. “I’m still getting used to this.”

“But you have powers don’t you?” Daria asked as she let go. “I noticed something just then; our trajectory changed a little as we came to the ground.”

“Yes. Telekinesis,” the Enigma answered. Her hands then glowed with purple. “And energy projections.”

“I see,” Daria responded. “And you haven’t mastered them yet.”

“No,” The Enigma admitted. “But my mentor is continuing to teach me, despite not wanting me to do this.”

“I’m sure they’re looking out for you.”

“Yes. But let’s go. I’m sure you don’t want to take too long, given it’s a school night.”

“I’ll manage,” Daria responded.

They quietly walked quickly along the street.

They reached the Lawndale Center twenty minutes later. “My mentor and I helped during the situation,” the Enigma said.

“And the news reports focused on SpiderGirl, Ninja Talon and the Shadow,” Daria added as she wrote in her notebook. ‘Enigma’s mentor helped.”

“I hid behind that tree,” the Enigma said, pointing at a tree. “And I shot energy projections at the attacker’s craft. It was difficult, as I didn’t want to hit SpiderGirl and the other two.”

Daria wrote that down. “What did your mentor do?”

“She said that she found an out of the way place and held up the roof, where it was threatening to collapse, with her powers.”

“So, she’s not a vigilante?”

“No,” the Enigma answered. “At least not in Lawndale, and not recently.”

‘That might explain the strange debris patterns. If the Enigma’s mentor was intervening with telekinetic powers.’

Sandi came down to breakfast and saw that her brothers were watching Brittany talk at the Groundhog Day Festival. ‘I doubt she’s the Shadow,’ she thought. She had been thinking about what that other vigilante had said, that she, Ninja Talon and SpiderGirl had worked together despite their differences. ‘I doubt I’d work with any of them,’ she thought as she reached for a cereal box.

Brittany finished her speech with a cheer. “Give me a G. Give me an R. Give me an O…”

“You did well.” Ms. Li said.

“Thanks,” Brittany responded.

“Remember, tonight at the Lawndale Center…”

“I will be there,” Brittany said before the Principal could say more.

Ms. Li entered her office fifteen minutes later, to find Norman Osborn waiting for her.

“You said you would get back to me later in the week,” Norman said.

“So, I did,” Angela said. “But I need some assurances that you would notify me if you do find out a student is one of the vigilantes.”

“Or more than one. I’m sure you’re aware of yesterday’s headline.”

“There’s no proof of a fourth vigilante. There’s not even a name.”

“Ninja Talon and the Shadow weren’t named at first either,” Osborn pointed out.

“Be that as it may, my point stands.”

“Fine, You will be notified if any of your students is one of the vigilantes.”

“Good, Mr. Osborn. I will have my people coordinate with yours,” Li said.

Osborn took out a piece of paper. “Here is a contract.”

“I didn’t agree to a contract, but I will read it and get back to you.”

“I will be back on Monday.”

Mayor Lawson was on edge. He read through the Sun-Herald’s article again. “Pure speculation!” he groused to himself. ‘There’s no proof there’s an actual fourth costumed vigilante.’

There was a buzz.

“What?”

“Norman Osborn is here demanding to see you.”

“Send him in!” he said.

“I see you’re aware of the news.” Osborn said.

“Are you behind this rumor?” Lawson asked. “Lawndale doesn’t need more people taking the law into their own hands!”

“I am not,” Osborn responded. “But this is exactly the sort of thing my proposal is designed to deter.”

“I doubt it. They will find a way to hide. And I know you’re out to get SpiderGirl. I may not like that she’s taking the law into her own hands, but she’s giving this city hope.”

“But what about the other two?”

“SpiderGirl vouches for Ninja Talon, it seems. The Shadow is more elusive. I doubt that whatever you’re planning will work,” Lawson answered.

“And if there is an actual fourth?”

“Then whoever they are will make themselves known at some point.”

“With my proposal we’ll catch them quicker,” Osborn argued.

“I will think about it!”

“And don’t forget that the Council approved it. You can’t drag your heels too much.”

“And I know you influenced the vote!” Lawson shot back. “Now get out.”

She walked further, listening to the crowds around her.

Soon she was in a less busy area. She heard someone nearby. “Excuse me,” she said.

“Yes?” the young boy asked.

“Could you give directions to a nearby tavern?”

“You don’t want a nearby one, miss. I recommend the Moonshine Mask. You’re a Bard, right?”

“Yes,” Illiana answered.

“It is also a place where Bards perform.”

“Then you can give directions.”

“Are you sure you can make your way, miss?” the boy asked.

“I can,” Illiana answered, for she had honed her hearing over the course of the journey from Candlekeep.

“Can I still come with?”

“You can.”

While Quinn was looking at the Schloss Morgendorffer architectural blueprints, Norman Osborn was looking at the engineering blueprints for the prototype glider. It was perfect for his needs.

Historia Opening is a Great Success

SpiderGirl emerged from the house in the early hours after about four hours of sleep. She did what usually did, sat on the roof, closed her eyes and listened to Lawndale. ‘Of course, I realise that I’m mostly listening to the part of town on the west side of the Creek,’ she thought as she did so. ‘Anything in Lawndale Flats would have to be particularly loud.’ She paused, opened her eyes and walked to the edge of the roof and looked in that direction. The downtown area hid that neighborhood from view.
She went back to her previous position and closed her eyes again and listened.

Half an hour later, she heard a cry for help a few streets to north. Opening her eyes, she swung into action.

Quinn arrived at the Historia, ready to start her first shift, at 11:00. She had spent most of the morning either on patrol, copying the blueprints or designing the mask. She saw Stacy there, ready to start. “Stacy!”

“Hi, Quinn!” Stacy said enthusiastically. “I’m ready for my first day.”

“That’s great!”

Sandi was at home. )
The Memorial Dance Incident - Part 1
It was an ordinary day at Lawndale High School. Brittany Taylor was bored. Just painting what one saw wasn’t interesting. She preferred it if it was more interesting. She looked at Jane Lane’s picture. “Why are the people covered in blood?” she asked Jane.

“Because that’s my interpretation,” Jane explained.

“Wait…” Brittany said. “Didn’t Ms. Defoe say to copy what we saw?”

“No, she just said to look around and paint what you see here, in the classroom,” Jane explained.

“But there’s no blood in the classroom,” Brittany said. “I mean, there is, but no one’s bleeding.”

“Well, the people are bleeding,” Jane said.

“Blood?” Kevin Thompson asked. “Cool! Hey, Jane, paint something with blood on my canvas. And maggots!”

“The problem is… This canvas is too small,” Jane said.

“Too small?” Kevin asked.

“I see what you mean,” Brittany said. She twirled a pigtail as she contemplated this, but something then distracted her.

“Good morning, students,” Principal Angela Li aid. “Where is your instructor?”

“She went to the ladies room,” Brittany answered.

Li took that information in )
Peterson and SpiderGirl entered the hospital room, and saw that Sarah Robyn was reading a book that she had found in the room. She put the book aside as they came over.

“Can you answer a few questions?” Peterson asked.

Sarah Robyn’s lips parted, but no sound came out. She shook her head. She then gestured for a piece of paper and a pen.

“Here,” Peterson said, as she handed over a pen and an empty notepad.

Sarah Robyn started writing.

“That isn’t good,” SpiderGirl whispered to Peterson.

“I have seen it before, unfortunately,” Peterson whispered back. “Trauma induced muteness.”

“What can be done?” SpiderGirl asked quietly.

“Therapy, what else?”

“Of course.”

The officer then noticed Sarah Robyn glaring at her.

“Sorry.”

While O’Neill was drawing names from a box, Ms. Li was looking up information on the competition in Middlebury.

“This looks like an opportunity for La-awndale High!” she said, as the cost wasn’t too much. She decided she would wait a while to tell Brittany as she didn’t want to interfere with the Language Arts class in session.

“Daria Morgendorffer, and Tananda Watts.”

‘I don’t really know her. I would have preferred Jane,’ Daria thought.

“Daria?” Tananda asked.

“That’s what’s been chosen,” O’Neill said.

Tananda grumbled.

“Brittany Taylor, please report to the Principal’s Office.”

“Cool!” Brittany said.

“Cool?” Kevin asked.

“I asked her about something, Kevy!” Brittany said, elbowing her boyfriend.

“Ow!” Kevin said as Brittany headed towards the Principal’s office.

‘That might be good news,’ Quinn thought after hearing the Principal page Brittany. At least she hoped so.

Brittany entered the Prinicpal’s office. “So?”

“I have approved your request, Ms. Taylor! It’s a great opportunity for La-awndale High!”

“That’s great! I shall tell the squad.”

“Wait!”

“Wait?” Brittany asked.

“You shall go tomorrow. I still need to write the permission slips.”

“Of course.”

“You may go now.”
