86. The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Two plumbers in Brooklyn are drawn into an adventure. Mario, and Luigi. After a job goes wrong, they find themselves catapulted into an adventure via mysterious warp pipes. Mario finds himself in the Mushroom Kingdom, whereas Luigi finds himself captured by Bowser. The Mushroom Kingdom is realized quite well, with many call backs to the games as Toad leads Mario to the Castle. Mario and Princess Peach bonding was done quite well also. Luigi’s experience is quite different. As Bowser tries to find out what Mario is doing in the Mushroom Kingdom.
The less said about Bowser’s tendencies towards Peach the better. The scenes with Donkey Kong and the Rainbow Road were rather good. The climatic scenes in Brooklyn were quite well realized. Overall it was a rather good film, it was quite worth seeing. 9.53/10.
85. Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
In the lands of Faerûn, a group of adventurers come together to attempt to right some wrongs. Edgin and his friend Holga break out of an Icewind Dale prison during a parole hearing. They then go southwards, where they learn that an old party member is now ruling Neverwinter and has Edgin’s daughter with him. The way they go about their quest was rather in line with how DnD campaigns go. Aside from that, the story was quite good. Doric’s character was well realized as were her motivations that lead to her joining the party.
Her role in the escape from the arena was an excellent part of the storyline. Edgin’s charisma as a Bard was done well too. The various set ups, with Simon and the helmet, the Hither Thither staff, etc. were well done. Overall it was a good film, that was worth seeing. 8.63/10.

Rewatch. Captain Jean-Luc Picard finds himself confronting a rather personal foe. His own clone. Shinzon wasn’t that well contrived. His motivation for attacking Earth seems simplistic. Nor were the reasons for the Reman crew of the Scimitar to follow him really elucidated. Where he found B4 wasn’t described either. That storyline could have been better written also. Data’s fate is still appropriately moving regardless of how bad the film may be. The foreshadowing of it was one of the better aspects of the film.
It certainly hasn’t stood the test of time, but is still worth re-watching for Data. 6.8/10.
Rewatch. Called into a mysterious region to recover Data, Picard and his crew find themselves deep in a moral quandary. The response to the plight of the Baku by Picard and his crew was well done. So were the motivations of the So’na. Some dialogue may have been poorly thought out, but the overall story makes up for that. Data and Picard’s interactions with some Baku were also well done, and helped to develop their characters further. That the other characters weren’t missed as much was a missed opportunity.
But overall, it was a better film than I remembered. 7.8/10.
Rewatch. The Borg have returned. Captain Picard has to face his past as Locutus in order to defeat them, especially after they interfere with First Contact. Overall the film is very good, especially when it deals with issues characters may have. Picard and his past assimilation. Cochrane and the hero worship of the Starfleet officers, vs what his real motivations were. Data and his quest to be more human. Especially with the latter, the Queen taking advantage of that desire played a major role in the plot.
Overall it was a rather good film. 9/10.
Rewatch. Two eras come together via a mysterious energy ribbon. A theme of the effect of the passage of time is woven throughout. This extends to the attitudes of the characters. There is a big contrast between Picard and Soren. However, it starts with Kirk in retirement giving the new Enterprise B a sendoff. This intro sequence is a rather good set up for the rest of the film. Picard’s grief is an important part of the overall theme. It could have been a better film, but it’s still worth watching. 8/10.
75. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
Rewatch. The Klingons reach out for peace with the Federation, but a conspiracy risks all! The themes of this film were rather good. Particularly with Kirk coming to terms with his issues with the Klingons. Gorkon’s attempt at peace was well portrayed, as was Chang and Valeris’ villainy. The detective work of Spock and the other crewmembers was well written. The scenes at Rura Penthe were a little drawn out, but that didn’t really detract from the overall film. Overall it is a rather good film. It is well worth rewatching. 9.5/10.
74. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
Rewatch. An ill prepared Enterprise is sent in response to a hostage situation. A quite interesting entry in the series. Also, the worst. A deluded cult leader seeks a paradise in the middle of the galaxy. The way Kirk and his crew dealt with the situation was depicted well, but the let downs were elsewhere. This was mainly the way the planet beyond the barrier was depicted. It certainly looked boring. There was nothing to differentiate it from Nimbus III. It certainly could have been better. 7/10.
73. Aladdin (2019)
Rewatch. This story of the ‘Diamond in the rough’ also holds up. The genie was portrayed well enough, as was Princess Jasmine. However, some aspects suffered due to the adaptation to live action (mostly related to Jafar, but it didn’t really detract from his villainy), but not many. It is still rather good, with early foreshadowing that pays off towards the end. Aladdin may be much the same, but other characters are either further developed or are different enough. Overall, it was a good film.
72. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Rewatch. A strange probe has arrived at Earth, draining power and evaporating the oceans. Spock quickly determines that only an extinct species could respond to it. Thus, Kirk and the former Enterprise senior officers go back in time to get some whales. The fish out of water comedy was done very well. Especially with Kirk and Spock’s interactions with Gillian. The environmental messaging wasn’t heavy handed at all. Overall a rather good film. 9/10.
Rewatch. The story of the ‘Diamond in the rough’ who doesn’t buy that he’s a ‘Street Rat’ holds up. Not only because of the way the Genie is portrayed, but also because of the animation, which easily shows the emotions of the characters. The way Princess Jasmine chafes at what was expected of her in her position was well portrayed. Jafar’s villainy was also rather well done. The collision of Aladdin’s attempts at courting the princess and Jafar’s ambition made for a very good story.
70. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
Rewatch. A follow up to the storyline of the previous film. The Enterprise crew returns to Earth with a damaged ship and a missing crewmate and friend. But all is not as it seems. The Genesis Planet plays a major role in the plot. The role the Klingons play in the film was also done rather well. The climax is rather good, with the crescendo of the Enterprise self-destructing. The re-fusion ceremony on Vulcan is an interesting way to leave an ending open. 8/10.
