Challenge 2
Challenge #2: Pets of Fandom

Loosely defined! Post about your pets, pets from your canon, anything you want!

Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. Also, feel free to entice engagement by giving us a preview of what your post covers.

And please do check out the comments for all the awesome participants of the challenge and visit their journals/challenge responses to comment on their posts and cheer them on.

And just as a reminder: this is a low pressure, fun challenge. If you aren't comfortable doing a particular challenge, then don't. We aren't keeping track of who does what.

Actual pets
I'm more of a cat person than a dog person.
I do have a cat. Her name is Cass, and shortly after I moved into this house (sometime during COVID) she was hanging around as the previous owners might have abandoned her. Therefore the mutual adoption occurred.

Fandom pets
Not an exhaustive list.

Daria
No canon pets in Daria, but I did write a ficlet about Daria having an unexpected pet.

An unexpected friend; of the Aquatic Variety
Jane followed Daria into her room. It was exactly as she had described it, with padding on the walls and bars in the windows. "Wow," she said. She took it in. A poster of a half-unearthed skeleton, a plain bed, a television on a trolly, models of a heart and a slice of cheese, another televison on a ceiling mount and a bookshelf with a computer set-up. Not to mention a Kafka poster. However, between the computer and the books was a small aquarium.
Jane went over to the aquarium and looked in it. It was unlike any other pet fish that she had seen before. "What sort of fish is this?" she asked.

"Talon, he's a Siamese fighting fish," Daria replied.

"Fighting Fish, huh? That's different."

"Definitely different to Quinn's goldfish, that's for sure," Daria said as she opened a box of food.

Jane chuckled.

Doctor Who
Does K9 count?

How to Train Your Dragon
Toothless (and the other trained dragons); enough said. Hiccup's interactions with him are the core of the movies (both the animated series and the remake)
I have started to write Dragons fic.

Kim Possible
Rufus being an equal part of the team with Kim and Ron.

Pokemon
Mostly various parts of the anime. But some of the games to.
(Especially Ash and his Pikachu)

Scooby Doo
Scooby and his support for Shaggy.
(Also have started to write Scooby Doo fic, not just the crossover with Daria.)

Star Trek: The Animated Series
The scene in Yesteryear with young Spock and I-Chaya.

Star Trek: The Next Generation
Data has his pet cat Spot, which makes for interesting storylines.

Star Trek: Enterprise
Porthos, Captain Archer's beagle

Superman
Krypto in the most recent movie was depicted very well.
“There it is,” the Doctor said as he lead the others into the Morgendorffers backyard from the laneway.

“That blue box?” Kim asked.

“Yes,” the Doctor answered as he unlocked the ship.

Kim looked around the Console Room as the Doctor went to the console. It was actually bigger on the inside than the outside. “This is weird, like in a good way. Usually, rooms like this belong to someone I’m fighting.”

“You fight people a lot?” Kaelyn asked.

“Only villains causing trouble others can’t deal with,” Kim answered.

“And your brothers,” Ron added.

“I don’t fight the tweebs like I fight the villains.”

“Tweebs?” Kaelyn asked.

“Her brothers,” Ron said. “They’re twins.”

“And dweebs. Therefore, tweebs,” Kim added.

The Doctor rolled his eyes at Kim and Ron’s description of Kim’s brothers as he adjusted the Scanner to scan Lawndale at the time of the flicker.

The data came back quickly. “There was an electromagnetic pulse that interfered with the electrical grid,” Kim surmised. “Could you share it with the Kimmunicator?”

“I doubt Wade Load would make more of it than I can,” the Doctor said,

“You know who Wade is?” Kim asked.

“I’m a time traveller. It’s not spoilers to say that you and Ron continue to make an impression on the world by thwarting various schemes into your young adulthood. Wade is part of that.”

“And yet you hadn’t heard of Kaelyn?” Ron asked.

“She probably doesn’t make much of an impression in comparison,” the Doctor said.

“I guess not,” Kaelyn said. “But there isn’t anything about what may have affected Stacy in this data.”

“True, I just scanned for the EMP first,” the Doctor admitted. “I’ll scan for psychic energy next.”

Kaelyn watched as the Doctor ran the next scan, and then the screen showed something. ‘The TARDIS must be very advanced,’ she thought.

“There is something,” the Doctor said. “But it’s still inconclusive.”

“Meaning?” Kim asked.

“Stacy may not be the only one who felt something,” the Doctor said.

“You mean others in Lawndale?” Kaelyn asked.

“Yes,” the Doctor said as he refocused the Scanner to the present. “The portal is stable.”

“That’s good,” Kim said.

“But even if it’s not, I can get you back to Middleton.”

“I can believe that,” Ron said.

“But we haven’t found out much,” Kim said. “We need to get back to the portal and fill Wade in.”

“I’ll just run another scan,” the Doctor said. “More intense.”

“Concerning,” the Doctor commented.

“What is it?” Kim and Kaelyn asked at the same time.

“The portal is causing weakness in space-time; along the path it is moving through with the Earth’s rotation and orbit. It’s barely perceptible, but it’s there,” the Doctor answered.

“And it would be leaving the same weakness in Middleton, right?” Kim asked.

“Yes. But the Earth still wouldn’t be in the same place, with the Sun having continued on it’s own orbit through the Galaxy.”

“How is it concerning?” Ron asked.

“It can be exploited to cause further problems,” the Doctor answered.

“But it’s not the only problem, is it?” Kaelyn asked.

“We still don’t know who made that device,” Kim said.

“We should find out,” Kaelyn said. “I could ask my parents.”

“And we’ll head back to the portal to check in with Wade,” Kim added. “See if he has gathered any more information on what may be happening.”

“Both good ideas,” the Doctor said as he adjusted the scanner and ran another scan.

Kaelyn watched as the scan resolved. The portal was stable.

“Whatever that power source is, it’s stable. It won’t run out any time soon,” the Doctor said.

“I suppose that is a relief,” Kim said. “we won’t need to rely on you to get back to Middleton.”

“I can be reliable!” the Doctor retorted.

“Most often,” Kim said. “From what I have heard from UNIT.”

“I’m sure they exaggerated,” the Doctor said.

“Probably,” Kim said. “Ron and I are heading out now.”

“I’ll run more scans.”

Kim and Ron stepped out of the TARDIS.

“What do you think about what the Doctor found?” Ron asked.

“I’m not sure what to make of it. But there is certainly more going on here, which is why we have to hurry.”

“On it, KP!”

The TARDIS doors opened again. “Wait!” Kaelyn said.

“You want to come with us?” Kim asked.

Kaelyn shrugged. “It would be better than staying in the TARDIS.”

“Come along, then.”
Quinn Morgendorffer returns to Lawndale after travelling with the Doctor in the TARDIS. However, she is drawn into another adventure when the Doctor picks up a strange energy reading in town. Team Possible investigate a portal that has appeared in Middleton that leads to Lawndale several years in the past.

“Which was?” Quinn asked quietly.

“Like, I was sensing something,” Stacy answered.

“Do you think someone was trying to talk to you?” the Doctor asked.

“Probably, but I’m not sure,” Stacy responded. She looked at Quinn. “You don’t think I’m crazy, do you?”

“No, Stacy, I don’t think you’re crazy,” Quinn answered. “You wouldn’t believe most of the things I have seen while travelling with the Doctor.”

“I can’t say much more,” Stacy said.

“We need to tell Kim and others we found her,” Ron said.

“Kim?” Stacy asked.

“Ron’s friend and also Daria and a robot named Kaelyn,” Quinn answered.

“A robot?” Stacy asked.

“A long story,” Ron answered.

Daria, Kim, Kaelyn and Brittany searched the last bathroom. “She has to be in a courtyard somewhere,” Daria said. “I hope the others have found her.”

“I think I know where,” Brittany said as she twirled a pigtail.

“You do?” Kim asked.

“I have seen her there before,” Brittany said.

“Why didn’t you say this before?” Daria asked.

“You didn’t ask.”

“Of course not,” Daria groused. “Lead the way.”

Stacy was still going over what was happening when Daria, Brittany and two others arrived.

“Brittany?” the Doctor asked.

“Hi, Doctor,” Brittany said.

‘She travels with the Doctor too?’ Stacy wondered briefly.

“I see you have got involved in this too,” the Doctor said to Brittany.

“Yes. I wanted to help Daria, as well as find out what’s up with Stacy.”

“As compassionate as ever,” the Doctor commented.

“Thanks,” Brittany said.

“So, what now?” Daria asked.

“There is something responsible for the portal device and the flicker,” the Doctor said.

“But they are unlikely to be the same thing,” Daria said.

“Or they might be,” the Doctor said.

“Most often it is,” Quinn said. “But that doesn’t mean that’s the case here.”

“There’s a portal?” Stacy asked.

“Yes,” Quinn answered.

“Kim and I came through it,” Ron said.

“From a town in Colorado in 2003,” Kim added.

“The future?” Stacy asked.

“Yes,” Kim answered.

“So, we have a time portal, which we accidentally activated,” the Doctor said.

“And a Time Lord,” Quinn added.

“Time Lord?” Kim asked. “Are you alien?”

“Yes, I’m a traveller through time and space. As I was saying. We have the portal which connects Lawndale to Middeton through time.”

“And myself,” Kaelyn added. “My family may not be responsible for the portal, but given my artificial nature…”

“A robot,” the Doctor added.

“And whatever is affecting Stacy,” Daria added.

“That is also affecting Lawndale’s electricity,” Stacy said.

“Are they related, is that what you’re asking?” Peter asked.

“It could be someone, or something I have faced before,” the Doctor answered.

“That could be anything,” Quinn said, clearly thinking of what she had already faced.

“That’s true,” the Doctor considered.

Daria thought about what Quinn had told her about her travels with the Doctor. The thought of any of the more strange, evil or powerful things being in Lawndale was frightening, She looked at the time. “We’ll have to get back to class soon.”

“Don’t remind me,” Stacy said.

“We’ll keep investigating Lawndale,” Kim said.

“Like, we have enough trouble with our own school,” Ron said.

“Ron!” Kim said.

“It’s true,” Ron added.

“I’ll continuing investigating too.”

“Cool, then we can go to the TARDIS, and scan Lawndale again,” the Doctor said. “We should be able to find something about the flicker that the sonic alone can’t.”

“Isn’t it still in our back yard?” Daria asked.

“Given that your parents are both at work, it shouldn’t be a problem,” the Doctor said.

“Then we’ll meet up at the pizza place after school?” Brittany asked.

“If there really isn’t a Bauno Nacho, it will have to do,” Ron said.

“Sounds like a plan,” Daria said.

The Doctor, Kaelyn and Team Possible left the school grounds as the bell for the next period rang. “So, your TARDIS is in the Morgendorffers’ backyard?” Kim asked.

“It must be small to fit in a back yard,” Ron said.

“You’ll see,” the Doctor said.

Quinn watched Stacy as they headed to class. She seemed like her usual self, but she knew that strange things could affect people. She shook her head, she didn’t want to think of some of the things she had encountered with the Doctor.
“Stacy?” the Doctor asked.

“Yes,” Quinn answered. “She reacted to the flicker in an unusual way.”

“What way?” the Doctor asked.

“Like she had felt something,” Quinn responded.

“I see,” Kaelyn said.

“She said that it wasn’t an ordinary flicker.”

“That could mean anything,” Kim said.

“True, but I can tell that she did pick something up,” Quinn said. “I probably woudn’t have noticed it if I hadn’t been travelling with the Doctor.”

“Did something happen?” Daria asked.

“Yes, but I’ll tell you later,” Quinn responded.

“Of course,” Daria said.

“So, we need to find Stacy,” Kim said. “So, where could she be?”

“She’s either in one of the bathrooms, or hiding somewhere in a courtyard,” Quinn answered.

“Either way, it would take a while to find her,” Daria said.

“We need to split up,” the Doctor said. “I’ll search the courtyards with Ron and Rufus, and everyone else can check the bathrooms.”

“Ron and I work best together,” Kim said. “But I agree, this time.”

“I would be best if there was a girl looking in the courtyards too,” Quinn said.

“Good point,” the Doctor said. “You can come with then.”

“Great!” Quinn said.

Thus Kim, Daria and Kaelyn went to search the bathrooms. “With our luck, It would probably be the last one,” Daria said.

“Probably,” Kim said. “But we have to be thorough.”

“Sarcastic, are you?” Kaelyn asked.

Daria nodded as they passed a classroom.

“The principal probably knows we’re sneaking about,” Kaelyn said.

“I notice the cameras. There are more than there are at Middleton,” Kim said.

“That was something I noticed when I started here,” Daria said. “The Principal seems intent on running the school with an iron fist.”

“I have heard something about it,” Kaelyn said. “But aren’t most principals like that?”

“More so than the principal at my last school,” Daria answered. “And he had more of a reason.”

“Where was this?” Kim asked.

“A dying town in Texas,” Daria responded. “I don’t want to say more.”

“No problem. I have been to many dying towns, tracking down villains who think they can hide there amongst the decay,” Kim said as they came up to one of the bathrooms.

They searched that particular bathroom, but Stacy wasn’t there. “How many bathrooms in this school?” Kim asked.

“About half a dozen,” Daria answered.

The Doctor, Quinn and Ron emerged into one of the courtyards. “Is she likely to be here?” the Doctor asked.

“Yes,” Quinn answered. “There’s no one place in the school that she likes to hang out in.”

“So, she could be anywhere?” Ron asked.

“Yes,” Quinn answered. “But we’ll find her if the others don’t.”

The Doctor waved the sonic screwdriver. “There are few people here.”

Quinn walked through the courtyard, then called Stacy’s name, but there wasn’t an answer. “There are few more courtyards.”

“Of course,” Ron said.

Daria, Kim and Kaelyn checked another two bathrooms. They met Brittany Taylor as she came out of the third one.

“I haven’t seen Stacy,” Brittany said as she twirled one of her pigtails.

“Then we’ll keep looking,” Kim said.

“Can I join you?” Brittany asked.

“Um, sure,” Daria said. “That’s Kim, and that’s Kaelyn.”

“Does it have something to do with that brownout earlier?” Brittany asked.

“Yes,” Kaelyn answered.

Quinn, the Doctor and Ron entered a third courtyard.

“There’s someone here,” the Doctor said as he examined the sonic’s output.

“I’ll approach them,” Quinn said. She went over and saw that it was Stacy, hiding beneath a tree.

“Quinn?” Stacy asked, with some trembling in her voice.

“Stacy, I know that something happened during that power flicker.”

“Yes, but it’s hard to explain!”

“You can take your time,” Quinn said.

“We don’t have all that much time,” the Doctor said.

“Who’s that?” Stacy asked.

“I told you about the Doctor before,” Quinn answered.

“That’s him?” Stacy asked. “But who’s that boy? Does he also travel with him?”

“I’m Ron. No I don’t travel with him. I help save the world with my friend, Kim Possible. You haven’t heard of her yet.”

“They come to Lawndale to investigate what’s going on,” the Doctor said.

“OK,” Stacy said. “It was the flicker, but I felt something strange too,” she began.
Kaelyn started preparing the snacks. She did so quickly and efficiently, but she made each one slightly different.

“So, you aren’t going to eat?” Ron asked between bites.

“No, I don’t need to eat,” Kaelyn answered. “Just charging and maintenance. I may look human, but I’m anything but on the inside.”

“Of course!” the Doctor said.

“I have plenty of charge, and I rarely leave the house,” Kaelyn added.

“So, what are you allowed to tell us about your family?” Kim asked.

“It depends on what is asked,” Kaelyn answered.

“And you deflected the question,” Kim said.

“I didn’t. I don’t know what questions you’re going to ask. All I know is that I won’t answer any that are too personal,” Kaelyn said.

“That’s fair, I guess,” Kim said.

“So, you’re a robot, right?” Ron asked.

“I believe that we established that,” Kaelyn answered in a snide tone.

“I mean. Are you known to the government as a human or what?” Ron asked.

“Ah,” Kaelyn said, quietly. “Apparently, I was named after a daughter they lost. But they haven’t said much about her.”

“I see,” Kim said. It didn’t surprise her that much.

“Far from the first time I encountered such,” the Doctor commented.

“Both of them are engineers who work for Landon Engineering.”

“Haven’t heard of it,” Ron said.

“It’s rather local,” Kaelyn clarified.

“I’ve heard of it,” the Doctor said.

“They make a variety of products, including various types of robots.”

“So, could Andrew Landon be involved in something nefarious?” the Doctor asked.

“I wouldn’t know,” Kealyn answered.

“But we could find out,” Kim said.

“But would it be something to do with the portal?” Ron asked.

“It’s almost certainly related,” the Doctor said. “I could get UNIT to check. But first we need to head to the High School.”

“Why?” Kim asked.

“There are a couple of sisters who were investigating the portal with me earlier,” the Doctor answered.

“In that case, we’ll do that,” Kim said.

Kaelyn called her parents )

Excerpt from: A River Journey
It was going to at least a few days journey to where they were going.

Arrietty looked at Spiller again. She wasn’t sure why she was looking at him. The feeling she was feeling was different than with Sho. She was quite sure. “Definitely,” she murmured.

Excerpt from: Convergence on Lawndale
“Where to first?” she asked.

“As I said, the High School,” the Doctor said.

“Of course,” she murmured.

“Let’s go,” Kim said.

The Doctor lead the way.

Excerpt from: Spider Quinn
“Quinn?” Stacy Rowe asked.

“I’m fine, Stacy. It’s just that it could be anything,” Quinn responded.

“I can come with you,” Stacy offered.

“Sure,” Quinn said.

Quinn knocked on the office door.

“Come in,” Li said.

Quinn entered. “You called, Ms. Li?”

“Yes. I know you still haven’t got any extracurricular activities after the end of the Fashion Club.”

“I guess I haven’t been looking, what with Christmas coming up and all.”

“Yes. Mrs. Manson is available,” Li said. She shook her head. “But that isn’t why I called you in.”

Christmas. That was going to be difficult. But Quinn put it out of mind. “So, why?”

“Most of the students of this school are reaching their potential…” The Principal started.

But Quinn interrupted. “You want me to tutor Kevin?”

“Let me finish, Ms. Morgendorffer!”

“Sorry.”

“Apology accepted. That’s something your sister might do, after the holidays. Anyway, there are three misfit students you may be able to help,” the Principal then handed a page over.

Quinn read it. “Anna Coultard… Has a reputation for being weird. That she does.”

“Yes. Whatever the truth is. She isn’t reaching her potential. There are two others.”

“Ben Harrod. A hypochondriac. This hypochondria prevents him from interacting with most of his peers due to his fear of germs. Ugh. Probably still thinks girls have cooties.”

“That’s inaccurate. He is friends with Anna,” the Principal interjected.

“I guess,” Quinn said. “And the last one. Gerald Brown. A loner. I guess like Daria would be if she hadn’t met Jane.”

“Maybe,” the Principal said.

“So, you want me to help these people?” Quinn asked. “How?”

“Encouraging to join in. With each other at first. We’ll see how it goes.”
