Linda had felt Sandi’s search for Jane and thus knew what had happened when she opened the door to find Daria holding up her daughter.

“I know about her powers, Mrs. Griffin. I promised to keep them secret.”

Linda took Sandi into her arms. “You know everything, I suppose?”

“Not everything,” Daria said. “She did tell me about her powers and that the ESP only works within Lawndale, or very close to it.”

“And about her mentor?”

“I think it might be you, Mrs. Griffin. I’ll keep your secret as well. You didn’t look that surprised when you opened the door.”

Linda sighed. “Come in.”

“Will Sandi be OK?” Daria asked after Mrs. Griffin had placed her on the couch.

“She just needs to rest,” Mrs. Griffin said as she went over to the kitchen. “Yes, I am her mentor and I have had similar experiences in the past.”

“And I suppose you still don’t approve of her being the fourth vigilante?”

“No,” Mrs. Griffin said with shake of her head. “She’s being rebellious, challenging my authority, going through a phase. But at least she’s accepting my advice. But what about your mother? What does she think about what you’re doing?”

“She’s supportive,” Daria answered. “She’s worried, of course, about both of us taking on too much with the Historia and investigating what’s going on in Lawndale. But otherwise, she’s still working overtime and coping with her own grief.”

“Good to hear,” Mrs. Griffin said as she turned on the kettle. “Cocoa?”

“Sure,” Daria answered. ‘Better than the energy drink I got earlier.’

Daria stayed just long enough to have the cocoa, to be sure that Sandi would be fine and to tell Mrs. Griffin about what happened at the Historia. There was a lot she wanted to ask Mrs. Griffin about, especially what she thought about the recent events in Lawndale since SpiderGirl appeared, but she decided that it could wait until after Jane was found and the opening weekend of the play.

Linda watched Daria go. ‘I’m certain that she will keep the secret. She seemed very sincere about that.’ She turned back to where Sandi was sleeping on the couch. ‘I hope she has learned something from this, but I also hope that Jane and the critics will be found soon.’

Daria changed to Dafoanairi as soon as she was out of sight of the Griffin’s place. She then headed back home through the back alleys, keeping alert for anything that might happen.

At the same time, Quinn arrived home.

“Quinn, what happened?” her mother asked.

Quinn then explained what had happened at the theater.

After finishing her shift, Quinn went up to the roof. But before she changed to SpiderGirl, she looked around at the town. ‘Did something change earlier?’ she wondered as she looked around. ‘Nothing out of the ordinary,’ she decided as she looked towards the Strawberry a second time. She then changed to SpiderGirl and listened for a while before swinging away. There was the usual discord that had been present for the past five days.

Towards midnight, Ninja Talon approached the Hecuba-Croft residence. She saw that Andrea’s light was still on through the dark curtains. ‘Good.’ She then went around to the backyard.

Andrea heard her door open. She saw a figure, looking like a ninja, there. “Ninja Talon?” she asked. “How did you get in here?”

“That’s me,” Ninja Talon answered. “I picked the back door lock.”

“Why are you here?”

“I would like you to hack into Oscorp for me.”

“Oscorp?” Andrea asked. She stood up. “Why would I do that, Brittany?”

“Brittany? Who’s Brittany?” Ninja Talon asked, her voice as low as it could go.

“I know it’s you, Brittany. Who else would know their way here in the night time?”

Brittany took off her mask. “How did you figure it out?” she asked.

“As I said, who else would know their way to this room at night? Not anyone else currently at Lawndale High. You came straight here; you didn’t open my parents’ door or those of any of the spare rooms by mistake.”

“Oops!”

“Don’t worry, your secret identity is safe with me and I’m not going to ask about SpiderGirl’s. But I am going to ask why you want me to hack into Oscorp!”

“Because SpiderGirl and I found out the extent of their footprint in Lawndale and because of what happened on Friday night.”

“Uh! Don’t remind me!” Andrea said with a wave of her hands. “I’m still jittery about that.”

“Sorry, but while we were able to find documents when we infiltrated an office, the computers were inaccessible.”

“They would be that way.”

“We did give copies of the documents to the Sun-Herald,” Brittany said. “But we need to find out more.”

“About what, beyond their footprint being large?”

“Where that glider craft is, that was used on Friday night.”

“So, far I’m just hearing a conspiracy theory,” Andrea said.

‘You could just check their website.”

“I will.”

Andrea accessed the website. )

“That sounds quite interesting,” Sylvia said as she wanted to know more.

“I can tell of all of them in song.”

“I can tell you’re good just by looking at you and hearing you talk.”

“Really?” the alley boy asked.

“Oh yes,” Sylvia said. “I happen to have a couple of rooms available for long term residents.”

“I would be happy to take up your offer,” the bard said. “But you haven’t seen me perform yet.”

“That’s’ true, but I thought you would like to settle in first, before exploring Neverwinter further.”

Alexia saw that Freya was a little different and it wasn’t just her pink hair and the energy she exuded. It was obvious that her focus wandered. She also saw that she squinted a bit when she turned the pages quickly. ‘I don’t want to ask,’ she thought. ‘She would be ready to say when she wants to say.’

“That’s obvious,” Daria said.

“We’ll do what we do tonight,” Peterson said.

“But what’s next?” Dani asked.

“Not sure,” Quinn said. “We’ll meet here again tomorrow morning.”

“Good idea,” Robert said.

Shortly afterwards, Quinn and Brittany changed to SpiderGirl and Ninja Talon respectively on the roof.

“I haven’t heard back from Andrea yet,” the latter said. “But she did say that it would take time. We can go to her place later, though.”

“I knew it would take time.”

“I’m happy the first performance went well, other than that hiccup.”

“You did very well as Ariel, and Dani really was trying her best with the limited time she had to prepare,” SpiderGirl said. “I’m sure she’ll be a great addition to the Historia’s team.”

“Thanks. Why pass her over the first time?”

“Because she didn’t have much experience. I was looking for that last time. But this time, after interviewing her again, I found that she had what I was looking for. The willingness to learn and to just jump in.”

“That makes sense.”

They then heard sirens somewhere to the west.

“I’ll go,” SpiderGirl said. “Responsibility calls.”

“Sure,” Ninja Talon said, having decided to wait for Andrea a little while longer.

Andrea glanced at the clock on the right side of the screen as she started downloading more video. 9:23. She felt something, she knew it was time for a bathroom break. “Mind it,” she said to Scott as she headed out.

Daria got home at the same time and found that Sandi was waiting in her room. “Sandi?” she asked.

“How did the play go?” Sandi asked.

“Quite well. There was only one hiccup, but Beck may have left more.”

“That’s good. But I have a plan.”

“Going to the Lake and trying to locate Jane again?” Daria asked.

“Exactly, but we’ll take your car.”

“I doubt Mom would let us.”

“Probably not,” Sandi said. “Then we’ll take another one.”

Daria sighed. “Dafoanairi isn’t as much as an antihero as the Enigma, but we’ll wait until the usual time.”

“Sure,” Sandi said with a smirk.

“Yes,” Lily answered, again with a whisper. “You?”

“Criminology,” Ivy answered.

The information Science section was relatively close to the Grand Atrium.

“Here we are,” Alexia said, as she turned into an out of the way nook. There were few other students there.

“Very good,” Freya said she followed.

“Directories, Archival systems. This is in Auroric…” Alexia said.

Freya took it. “Renaissance Era cataloguing systems,” she said.

“You’re Auroric?”

“I am, although from relatively close to Urbs Aeterna.”

“What else does it say?”

“It gives a list of the cataloguing systems. But there is no indication of a colour coded map of the library,” Freya said.

“They have to be around here somewhere,” Alexia said with a tone of exasperation.

“There!” Freya said, she bounded over to a shelf.

“What is it?”

“Diagrams of the Main Library.”

“Looks like there is a large number of editions,” Alexia said.

“This is the 63rd, published in 2004,” Freya said as she opened it.

Excerpt from:
“I’ll wait in the café.”

“Thanks.”

Dani entered the café and saw that Scott Ashworth was there. ‘I didn’t think he was interested in Shakespeare,’ she thought. She then went up to the counter.

“How may I help you,” the pigtailed waitress asked.

“A white tea, thanks.”

“Coming right up.”

Scott Ashworth listened to the gothic girl, Andrea, as she explained what the vigilante, Ninja Talon, had asked for her. Despite the busyness of college life, he had followed the news since SpiderGirl had appeared, especially after Groundhog Day. It seemed that the situation in Lawndale was escalating. “So, you want to try to find Jane Lane, or the critics, through the video surveillance system?”

“Yes. At least use Oscorp’s tentacles for good.”

Andrea had told him about the large property footprint of Oscorp in Lawndale too. “I could get in trouble if you’re caught,” he said.

“I know. I will be careful,” Andrea responded.

“That’s what I wanted to hear.”

“Huh?”

“I will do it,” Scott said. “I mean I’ll let you.”

“Right now?”

“Before the play starts. I have a ticket for tomorrow night, but.”

“I wasn’t seeing it tonight either,” Andrea responded. “Ninja Talon’s here, somewhere, as her secret identity. I’ll let her know.”

“I’ll wait.”

Andrea found Brittany in an isolated area backstage. “It’s going ahead,” she said.

“I’ll let Spidey know,” Brittany responded. “But when?”

“Right now.”

“Right, but we won’t be able to respond until after the play.”

“Is SpiderGirl in the play?” Andrea asked.

“I’m not answering that.”

Andrea chuckled. “I know. And somehow, I’m sure Jane wouldn’t mind waiting a few hours. But I know I won’t find something straight way. It will take time, such that the play would likely be over first.”

As Andrea left out the front with Scott, Quinn and Brittany emerged onto the roof. “I still have a couple more interviews to conduct,” Quinn said.

“How many is that?” Brittany asked.

“Seven, Beck was the eighth.”

“Anyway, Andrea has left with Tania’s brother.”

“So, It’s going ahead?” Quinn asked.

“Yes, but she said that it would take time.”

“I knew that.”

“There’s still an hour before the play,” Brittany said. “I’m going to patrol.”

Quinn nodded. “With all that’s going on, the rest of Lawndale hasn’t been getting the same attention this week.”

Dafoanairi returned to the Historia after a quick patrol herself, and saw Ninja Talon leave the roof. ‘Not surprising,’ she thought as she paused before re-entering. One the ninja had gone out of sight, she re-entered the building.

Daria entered the café and saw a large group of fellow Lawndale High students having an early dinner. “I guess this takes their mind off things,” she commented to Peterson.

“It does.”

“Any further news?”

“None,” Peterson answered.

“It’s still early yet.”

“Exactly. It isn’t always dramatic rescue missions. Far from it. It’s a lot of legwork.”

“I knew that,” Daria commented. “Intellectually. Now I’m getting a better understanding.”

Excerpt from: Spider Quinn
After midnight, Daria crept out onto the roof. She looked out over Lawndale, and wondered where Jane was being held. ‘It has to be somewhere close by.’ She took out a map of Lawndale County. ‘She said that Oakwood is too far for her locate ability to work. Five miles between Lawndale and Oakwood.’ She looked at the area south of Lawndale, and saw that Lake Lawndale was only three and a half miles from the center of Lawndale at the closest point. ‘Or maybe she’s being held somewhere there. But I can’t get there tonight.’
She then went down to try to get some sleep.

SpiderGirl arrived on the roof of the Historia in the early hours to find Ninja Talon waiting. “Hey.”

“Hey, Spidey. It was an interesting evening.”

“And complicated. I got the impression that the Enigma doesn’t like the civilian me personally. I’m not sure why.”

“I got to the creek with Trent and Dafoanairi but we were too late,” Ninja Talon said.

“They said that.”

“What happened with the theater?”

“There were no traps, and most of the other actors were still there. But you weren’t the only one who left,” SpiderGirl answered.

“Good.”

“Your secret identity is still safe.”

“I still took a risk,” Ninja Talon said.

“So did I.”

“And you still think Dafoanairi might be Daria?”

SpiderGirl nodded. “She had run off and said that she had gave chase to the abductor when she returned.”

“But she could have done that anyway.”

“That’s a good point.”

“But now we need to find Jane,” Ninja Talon said. “I have an idea.”

“We’re going to ask Andrea?”

“Yes. Either that or infiltrate Oscorp again to get the CCTV footage.”

“Andrea first,” SpiderGirl decided. “But would she be up?”

“We could go there anyway.”

SpiderGirl agreed, and so they headed in that direction.

As it turned out, Andrea was up, gaming, as she couldn’t sleep with everything that had been going on. She heard Ninja Talon and SpiderGirl enter the house from the back door. Just as well her parents were heavy sleepers. She met them in the hallway. “Why are you here?” she asked quietly. “You’re not asking me to hack Oscorp again, are you?”

“Maybe,” SpiderGirl said. “It’s to do with the missing critics.”

“I doubt Oscorp is responsible,” Andrea said as she lead them into her room.

“Jane Lane is also missing,” Ninja Talon said.

“I heard her interview about the play,” Andrea said. “Wait, are you saying that something happened?”

“Yes,” SpiderGirl said and explained what had happened at the Historia earlier in the night.

Andrea took it in. “I’m not sure what I could do about it. Even if there are cameras outside the Historia that might have seen this mysterious person take Jane into the stormwater system, trying to download the video over a dial up connection won’t work.”

“I see,” SpiderGirl said.

“But there could be a way,” Andrea considered.

“What would that be?” Ninja Talon asked.

“If I had access to one of Lawndale State’s computer labs, I would be able to do it.”

“I have no idea about that,” SpiderGirl said.

“But other students at Lawndale High have siblings at Lawndale State,” Andrea said. She turned to Ninja Talon. “I could get back to you at lunch. What do you say?”

“That could work. We can meet in the library. But Spidey won’t be there!”

“I won’t,” SpiderGirl said.

“Relax. I still don’t want to know your identity.”

“Good. Then Talon can tell me later.”

Ninja Talon nodded.

Mystik Spiral then launched into one of their older songs, confusing their audience. “Huh?” Angie asked.

“What song is this?” Brittany asked.

“I'm not sure,” Angie answered.

DeMartino followed Jane and Daria out into the yard. “I see that they haven't improved much,” he commented.

“Huh?” Daria asked.

“They sound almost exactly the way they did at school,” DeMartino answered.

“That's not surprising,” Daria commented. “Given Trent's proclivity for sleep.”

DeMartino chuckled at that.

Claire Defoe knocked on the door. Jane answered it.

It didn’t take long for Daria to find out what happened. As she and Scarlett left school that afternoon, they found Andrea waiting for them in the parking lot. “How did it go?” Scarlett asked.

“Rather poorly,” Andrea answered before explaining everything that she had witnessed.

Daria took in what Andrea had said. It wasn’t surprising. “I suppose she’ll be writing a piece to disparage you.”

“Of course, but I don’t care!” Andrea said.

“That’s good, but how did Ms. Li react?”

“She was slowly losing her cool,” Andrea answered.

“That’s not surprising,” Scarlett commented.

“I see,” Keith said. “What game character is that?”

“It's from the old Atari,” Jane answered. “It's quite obscure.”

“Look's interesting.”

“Well, it is a sci-fi game.” She drew some stars in the background for emphasis.

“Cool.”

“Jennifer,” Cindy said as the quiet girl followed.

“Yes?”

“We're doing more of the improve here,” Cindy said.

“Cool,” Jennifer said.

“It should balance out whatever Daria was trying to do,” Quinn added.

“Yes. It's clear she was doing something you wouldn't agree with,” Jennifer agreed.

“That's quite obvious,” Kristen said. “Hence why Mom didn't allow her in.”

Jennifer nodded.

“We're now at Kristen's,” Quinn said. “My sister was going to cause trouble, so she wasn't allowed in.”

“That's right,” Kristen said.

“That's something we didn't want,” Cindy said.

“And now we can do more improv,” Quinn said.

“So, what’s this about fundraising?” Donna Bolton asked.

Daria explained what she had told Brittany earlier.

“So, it’s because of your parents?” Andrea asked.

“Yes,” Daria answered.

“That is definitely unfair,” Andrea complained.

‘So, I brought it up with Brittany,” Daria explained.

“And I decided to bring you two in and get Kevvie to do it with Mack,” Brittany explained.

“But wouldn’t Mack want to do it with Jodie?” Donna asked.

“Probably,” Brittany admitted.

“In any case, it would depend on what we’re selling,” Andrea said.

“I agree,” Daria said.

“But we probably won’t know until Mr. O’Neill tells us,” Brittany said.

They talked about it for a while, but all they agreed on was to talk to O’Neill in the morning.

Daria arrived at school early with Donna. She still wasn’t sure about the fundraising. “So, we’re going to the office?” Donna asked.

“Yes,” Daria answered. “We’re meeting Brittany and Andrea there before talking to O’Neill.”
