Shortly afterwards, Quinn changed to SpiderGirl on the roof of the theatre. The themes of change resonated with her, specially with the changes she had undergone since she got bit by that spider and after her father died. ‘Daddy! I will always miss you! Thank you for saying ‘With Great Power. Comes Great Responsibility.’ It has given me something to strive for.’ She then thought about Brittany as Ariel. ‘She’s pouring herself into the role.’ Then she heard sirens to the east, across the creek in Lawndale Flats. ‘Responsibility calls,’ she thought as she swung away.

Daria and Jane left the Historia, heading towards the pizza place. “That was rather good for a first rehearsal,” Jane said.

“The actors had time to learn the script. And many were already familiar with The Tempest,” Daria said.

“Including Brittany? That was a surprise.”

“Apparently she had read Shakespeare since she was young.”

“I must have missed that,” Jane mused. “What do you think about the guy playing Prospero?”

“Tom? He’s good. It must be because Fielding covers Shakespeare better than a public school would.”

“I mean, he’s cute.”

“I don’t think so,” Daria said. “He’s like all the other boys.”

Jane shrugged. “Maybe. Still, all of them were good, including Tania.”

“She did well in her audition. Just because she was running around town accusing people of being the vigilantes over a week ago doesn’t mean I would not give her the opportunity.”

“Of course. Of course.”

As she sat down for dinner, Helen noticed something different about Daria. “Hairclips, Daria? I’m happy that you’re changing something up.”

“That’s all I’m changing,” Daria responded. “I may have decided to grow my hair, and grief for Dad is changing me, but I’m still your sarcastic daughter who doesn’t dress to fit in.”

Helen chuckled. “I just didn’t expect it, that’s all. But, change is a constant in life, Daria. You may find that you’re changing in ways you don’t expect.”

“I already know that.”

“At some point you may not want to wear that jacket anymore.”

“I intend to wear this for the rest of high school,” Daria said.

“All I’m saying is, that you might reconsider as you change.”

Daria thought on that as she ate. She hoped that her mother was wrong on that score. ‘But she’s rarely wrong on this. Time will tell.’

At the same time, Quinn served one of the girls from school. “Erin Archer, is it?” she asked.

“Yes,” the girl answered. “I don’t hang out with the so-called popular crowd. But, Anna has spoken highly of you.”

“Really?”

“That you’re going above and beyond. It’s too bad Ben got bit by that snake.”

“You heard about that?” Quinn asked.

“Yes. Most of the students would know about it by now.”

“Of course. I shouldn’t underestimate the rumor mill.”

“And you’ve been in them a lot since the Fashion Club ended,” Erin said.

“And I tried to counter what Sandi said.”

“I’d say that was successful. I haven’t heard much since before the holidays.”

“That’s good,” Quinn said. “But what would you like?”

“Cocoa with small chips please.”

“Coming right up.”

Quinn soon finished her first shift. )
While O’Neill was drawing names from a box, Ms. Li was looking up information on the competition in Middlebury.

“This looks like an opportunity for La-awndale High!” she said, as the cost wasn’t too much. She decided she would wait a while to tell Brittany as she didn’t want to interfere with the Language Arts class in session.

“Daria Morgendorffer, and Tananda Watts.”

‘I don’t really know her. I would have preferred Jane,’ Daria thought.

“Daria?” Tananda asked.

“That’s what’s been chosen,” O’Neill said.

Tananda grumbled.

“Brittany Taylor, please report to the Principal’s Office.”

“Cool!” Brittany said.

“Cool?” Kevin asked.

“I asked her about something, Kevy!” Brittany said, elbowing her boyfriend.

“Ow!” Kevin said as Brittany headed towards the Principal’s office.

‘That might be good news,’ Quinn thought after hearing the Principal page Brittany. At least she hoped so.

Brittany entered the Prinicpal’s office. “So?”

“I have approved your request, Ms. Taylor! It’s a great opportunity for La-awndale High!”

“That’s great! I shall tell the squad.”

“Wait!”

“Wait?” Brittany asked.

“You shall go tomorrow. I still need to write the permission slips.”

“Of course.”

“You may go now.”

“Good Morning, Students! I’m proud to announce that the annual La-awndale High Spelling Bee will be held this Friday!”

Quinn knew she was going to do well at the spelling bee. However, she didn’t expect that Sandi would sign up too. “What?”

“I can spell!” Sandi said.

“I know that,” Quinn said..

“But that’s not the reason why I’m signing up. That is because you’re doing it!”

“Really?”

“Yes!” Sandi said.

“That’s not a good reason!” Quinn objected.

Sandi turned away in a huff.

“I’ll show her!” Quinn declared as she headed towards the library.

Meanwhile Daria and Jane met up on the roof.

“Trent said you called last night,” Jane said.

“Yes,” Daria said. “It’s that I realised that we haven’t been meeting up outside of school for the past month and half.”

“That’s untrue,” Jane said.

“It is, since that Jenna visited you have been busy. First with your mother, which is reasonable, but now this project whatever it is, is taking up all your time.”

“I’m still working on it. It will probably go on indefinitely,” Jane said. “And don’t say you’re not busy. I know you helped Joey and Robert with their business plan.”

“But that doesn’t take up all my time.” Daria said with annoyance. “This is taking up all of yours.”

“Not all of my time,” Jane said.

“But a lot of it. Do you have anything to show for it.”

“I do, Morgendorffer. You can come over this afternoon, and I will show you something.”

“I’ll hold you to it,” Daria said. There was then some awkward silence.

‘What is going on with Jane?’ Daria wondered as she headed to her next class. She wasn’t sure. ‘I’m still grieving Dad. Not as much as Quinn, but…’ She looked at some of the other students as she passed them in the hall. ‘I’m sure most of them wouldn’t be like Jane was,’ she thought. She saw the girl, Anna, whom Quinn was mentoring, talking to the hypochondriac next to a couple of lockers. ‘Not them.’

Helen opened the door. “Hello, Elisabeth. Stacy will be down shortly.”

Elisabeth Rowe entered. “How are you holding up?” she asked.

“I’m fine. Keeping busy, mostly. My sisters are helping, funnily enough.”

“You’re lonely, aren’t you?”

“Yes,” Helen admitted.

“You aren’t alone,” Elisabeth said taking one of Helen’s hands.

“Thanks, but I don’t know you much,” Helen said.

Stacy and Tiffany then came down the stairs. “Mom, Tiffany would like a lift home,” the former said.

“Sure,” Elisabeth said to her daughter. She turned to Helen. “Would you like to come to a café tomorrow evening?”

“I’ll see if I can swing it with work,” Helen answered. ‘It would be a good idea,’ she thought.

“I’ll hold you to it.”

“How’s Quinn?” Elisabeth asked her daughter as she pulled away from the Morgendorffers.

“She’s still grieving, but she’s coping in her own way,” Stacy answered.

“That’s good.”

“You’re concerned for Mrs. Morgendorffer, aren’t you?”

“Yes.”

Lawndale Sun Herald )
06 The Lawndale Files Part 1
It was Assembly time at Lawndale High. Principal Angela Li came to the podium. “Settle down, young people! Now, before the varsity interpretive dance team begins its performance – ‘History, We Are You’ -- we have a brief announcement from some special guests, agents...”

She was interrupted by the agents. “No names,” the male agent said.

“No credentials,” the female agent added.

“Students, we'll be brief. We've received some disturbing reports from this town, and we're asking for your cooperation.”

“Keep your eyes open. Watch for people who are different. They know who they are.”

“And with your help, kids, so will we.”

Quinn Morgendorffer was concerned. ‘I guess I’ll have to be more careful as SpiderGirl,’ she considered. ‘Maybe I shouldn’t have been in Freemont on the weekend.’ Things in Lawndale were getting worse. ‘Maybe?’

That afternoon Daria and Jane were thinking about the Assembly as they watched television.

“From outer space to in your face! Aliens walk among us! A Sick, Sad World exclusive.”

“Oh, look, they're going to explain the return of disco,” Daria said.

“The aliens aren't coming. They're already here. They could be your friends, your family. They act almost normal, but something's off.”

“Yes, the TV!” Jane said, annoyed. “If there were any aliens smart enough to come here, they wouldn't be stupid enough to come here.”

“There goes my trick ear again. What was that?”

Quinn was annoyed. Brittany’s audition, while rather good, wasn’t an excuse for Mr. O’Neill to not consider anyone else. She wondered what to do about it. Then it hit her. Sabotage! “She won’t know what’s coming!” she said darkly.

The fair was already underway when the Morgendorffers arrived. Both Quinn and Daria took leave of their parents. “Daria! Quinn!” Helen called.

“That’s funny, they were here a minute ago.”

Helen saw Linda Griffin approaching, along with her husband and children. “Linda. Tom!”

“Helen, Jake,” Tom greeted.

“Have you met, Sam and Chris?” Linda asked. “Kids, say hello to Mr. and Mrs. Morgendorffer.”

The two boys ran off. Sandi rolled her eyes.

“Too bad Quinn lost out to the Taylor girl,” Linda said.

“There will be other opportunities,” Helen said in a neutral tone. “The competition was fairly stiff.”

“That’s not the way I heard it,” Linda shot back.

‘Of course, Sandi would misrepresent it,’ Helen thought with a glance at the girl in question as she too, wandered off.

Brittany arrived at the fair. )
02 – A Fair of Change
Brittany heard cracking above her. She broke off from Kevin.

“What is it, Babe?” he asked.

“I think the roof is falling in!”

“That’s silly, Babe. Roofs don’t fall in!” Kevin objected.

But that was what happened next. But as it was only a partial collapse, the shelves protected them. ‘How are we going to get out of here?’ Brittany wondered. But she saw that only one of the shelves had fallen over and that there was an open window nearby. “This way!” she said to Kevin.

“Are you sure?” Kevin asked.

“Yes!” Brittany took his hand and lead him toward the window,

“But, Babe! It’s raining!” Kevin complained. He wasn’t sure why Brittany wanted to jump out of the library window into the rain. But then there were many things he was confused about, including why Brittany had dyed her hair black. He was still trying to take in what had just happened.

“It’s better than staying in the library where the roof has just fallen in!” Brittany explained.
“Besides, more of it might fall.” She started climbing through the window.

Kevin sighed as he heard more of the strange sound from earlier, and quickly followed his girlfriend through the window.

Brittany ran into the school's main building )
First class was Language Arts

“And so, in The Sound and the Fury, Faulkner give us a veritable kaleidoscope of P.O.V.s -- points of view. Of course, the title itself is from Shakespeare. Can anyone tell me which of the Bard's tragedies?” Mr. O’Neill asked. “Jodie?”

“MacBeth.”

“That's right. The ‘Scottish play’! ‘Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then... is heard no more. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.’” He saw Val raise her hand.

Andrea sighed.

“Yes, Val?” the teacher asked.

“I'd be happy to take a few questions.”

“Oh. Okay, sure,” O’Neill said.

“Val, how'd you get started?” Brittany asked.

“Well, I was a bit like Andrea. I wrote all the time. I was smart, I was cool...”

Kevin interrupted. “But Andrea’s not cool.”

“Anyone who writes like that is cool in my book. And my book is called Val, on sale at your local newsstand. Next?”

Jodie raised her hand.

“Yes.”

“Don't you think Val could try harder to present a multicultural, multi-ethnic, less brain-dead point of view to enlighten girls instead of just marketing to them?” Jodie asked.

‘A very pertinent answer,’ Daria considered.

“Jodie, you've got great sassy energy! Now let me turn it back on you. Pea green nail polish: edgy or icky? What do you guys think?”

“You didn’t answer the question,” Jodie said after a few moments of silence.

“I’ll consider it,” Val said in a tone that implied that she wouldn’t.

Andrea looked like she wanted to disappear. “Any other questions?” she asked.

“Nobody?” Val asked. “Now, who has a dating problem they would like to discuss?”

O’Neill raised his hand and most of the class groaned.

Andrea was even more annoyed... )
Before Kevin could try again, Mr. O'Neil started the lesson.

As soon as the lesson finished DariaBrittany rushed out of the classroom...

Jane and BrittanyDaria found her near the library. “I think I know why you don't want to be with Kevin, amiga,” Jane said.

“As far as he is concerned, I am Brittany Taylor. The fact that something has happened will go over his head!”

“I agree,” BrittanyDaria said.

“So you know that he's dumber than a box of rocks,” DariaBrittany said.

“Of course I do!” BrittanyDaria said, whilst twirling the end of one of her pigtails.

“The next thing, Brittany. How suspicious was Quinn?”

“A little. I, like, waited until she had gone to breakfast before sneaking into her room. It took me a while to find these clothes,” BrittanyDaria answered.

“But did she see you before you left?” DariaBrittany asked.

BrittanyDaria twirled her hair again. “Probably. I saw your Dad, but he said that your Mom had already left for work.”

“He wouldn't notice something different.”

“Huh? I think he would.”

“Not straight away.”

“Right,” BrittanyDaria said.

“And there's still Quinn...”

“Jane knows.”

“But I can believe that this happened,” Jane admitted. “But others would think that this is either a massive prank, or that you both have gone crazy.”

“You're right,” BrittanyDaria said.

“So, What's the plan?” Jane asked DariaBrittany.

“I have no idea,” she said.

“Eep!” BrittanyDaria said.

“No idea yet,” DariaBrittany clarified.
“You'll have to come up with one soon,” Jane added.

“Of course.”

They talked for a short while longer before they needed to go back to class.

When class finished... )
Quinn looked at Stacy in concern as they left the school grounds. She had been silent since Mr. O’Neill said they would be up at Assembly. ‘I’m still not sure what to do about it,’ she thought. Sandi would react in an unhelpful way to be sure “Stacy?” she asked, with concerned.

Stacy breathed deeply. “We can’t go to Assembly! Sandi will find out!”

“Don’t worry, Stacy, I’ll think of something,” Quinn responded in a reassuring tone.

“I hope so!”

“We’ll go to Sandi’s now,” she decided.

“What?” Stacy was aghast.

“I’ll come up with something on the way.”

“OK.”

Sandi Griffin was surprised when her mother announced that she had visitors. The next Fashion Club meeting was not until next week. “Tell them to come up,” she said before going back to her desk and putting her homework away.

Quinn and Stacy entered the room. “Hi, Sandi,” Quinn said.

“Where’s Tiffany?” Sandi asked.

“Probably at home,” Stacy answered, before looking to Quinn.

“There is something we need to say,” Quinn said.

“What’s that?” Sandi asked.

Quinn looked at Stacy.

‘What are they up to?’ Sandi wondered.

“Something’s happening tomorrow,” Quinn said.

“What is happening?” Sandi asked.

“We’re going up on Assembly for something,” Stacy said.

“For what?” Sandi asked.

“Something,” Quinn said in an enigmatic tone.

“Just get out with it.”

Quinn then explained about the self-esteem class.

Sandi took in Quinn's explanation. )
