"Thank you, Jodie Landon, valedictorian of the graduating class of Laaawndale High. And remember, parents, your child doesn't have to be a current student for us to accept your generous donations. Endow, people, Endow! ... and now, awards time! We'll do the sports and other good prizes after I get these academic jobbies is out of the way. Now, as you know, at Lawndale High we prefer to reward students for both their scholarship and contribution to student life. But, occasionally, a student does so well in one area that we are forced to recognize him or her despite crippling deficiencies in the other. And so, I give you the winner of this year's Lawndale High School Diane Fossey Award for dazzling academic achievement in the face of near-total misanthropy... Ms. Daria Morgendorffer!"

“Ahh, Brittany! Can you guess which war we fought against the Mexicans over Manifest Destiny?”

Brittany concentrated. “Um, no!”

“Please try, Brittany!”

Brittany then said something that just made the teacher more aggravated.

“Class, we have a new student joining us today. Please welcome Daria Morgendorffer. Daria, raise your hand, please.”

Daria raised her hand.

“Well, Daria. As long as you have your hand raised.” He then chuckled. “I suppose you think it’s unfair to be asked a question on the first day of class.”

“Excuse me?”

“Daria, can you concisely and unemotionally sum up for us the doctrine of Manifest Destiny?

“Manifest Destiny was a slogan popular in the 1840s. It was used by people who claimed it was God's will for the U.S. to expand all the way to the Pacific Ocean. These people did not include many Mexicans,” Daria answered.

“Very good, Daria. Almost... suspiciously good. All right, class. Who can tell me which war Manifest Destiny was used to justify?” He spotted Kevin Thompson, who he hoped would get something right. “Kevin? How about you?”

“The Vietnam War?” the football player guessed.

DeMartino was more annoyed. “That came a little later, Kevin... a hundred years later. A lot of good men died in that conflict, Kevin. I believe we owe it to them to at least get the century right!”

“Uh? Operation Watergate?” Kevin guessed again.

Daria looked at the interaction between the quarterback and the teacher. It was obvious that the former was out of his depth.

“Can I come to?”

Quinn looked at Stacy in concern as they left the school grounds. She had been silent since Mr. O’Neill said they would be up at Assembly. ‘I’m still not sure what to do about it,’ she thought. Sandi would react in an unhelpful way to be sure “Stacy?” she asked, with concerned.

Stacy breathed deeply. “We can’t go to Assembly! Sandi will find out!”

“Don’t worry, Stacy, I’ll think of something,” Quinn responded in a reassuring tone.

“I hope so!”

“We’ll go to Sandi’s now,” she decided.

“What?” Stacy was aghast.

“I’ll come up with something on the way.”

“OK.”

Sandi Griffin was surprised when her mother announced that she had visitors. The next Fashion Club meeting was not until next week. “Tell them to come up,” she said before going back to her desk and putting her homework away.

Quinn and Stacy entered the room. “Hi, Sandi,” Quinn said.

“Where’s Tiffany?” Sandi asked.

“Probably at home,” Stacy answered, before looking to Quinn.

“There is something we need to say,” Quinn said.

“What’s that?” Sandi asked.

Quinn looked at Stacy.

‘What are they up to?’ Sandi wondered.

“Something’s happening tomorrow,” Quinn said.

“What is happening?” Sandi asked.

“We’re going up on Assembly for something,” Stacy said.

“For what?” Sandi asked.

“Something,” Quinn said in an enigmatic tone.

“Just get out with it.”

Quinn then explained about the self-esteem class.

Sandi took in Quinn's explanation. )
"Esteem, a Teen. The sounds don’t quite mesh. So. it is with teens and esteem. The two don’t seem to go together. But we are here to begin realizing your actuality...” Mr. Timothy O’Neill to the self esteem class.

Quinn raised her hand. She wanted to know what he meant by ‘realising your actuality’. It sounded like gibberish to her.

“...and when we do, each and every one of you will be able to stand proudly and proclaim, "I am." Now, before we...”

“Mr. O’Neill? I don’t understand something,”

“Sorry, question and answer time is later,” O’Neill said.

“What does ‘Realising your actuality’ mean?”

“It means... look, just let me get through this part, okay? Then there'll be a video!”

Quinn felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned to see that it was one of her new friends. “Stacy?” she asked in surprise.

“Quinn? Sorry, but he doesn’t know what it means. He’s got it all memorised,” Stacy explained.

“How am I supposed to follow him if I don't know what he's talking about?”

“I’ve taken notes before. I’ve been here twice, already,” Stacy explained.

The blue Lexus was approaching the High School. "Quinn, I just want to know your mother and I realise it's not easy moving to a whole new town," Jake Morgendorffer said.

Quinn looked at her father with a puzzled expression. She was glad when they finally left Highland for a suburb on the eastern seaboard. "No problem," she said as her father pulled up at the drop off point.

"Don't get upset if it takes the other kids a little while to warm up to you."

Quinn shook her head in annoyance as her father drove away. "Hi! You're cool," a girl with her hair in pigtails said. "What's Your Name?"

"Quinn Morgendorffer."

"Cool Name," another girl stated.

"Will you go out with me?" a red haired boy asked.

"Probably. I just got here!"

Usually Angela Li, Principal of Lawndale High, could tell when a new student was trouble. She could tell that the girl with the long curly red hair was going to be trouble. "As you can see, our Lawndale High students take great pride in their school. That's why you'll each be taking a small psychological exam to spot any little clouds on the horizon as you sail the students seas of Lawndale High."

"No one told me about any test!" the girl objected.

Ms. Li glared at the girl, and made a note for Mrs. Manson...

Mrs. Manson... )
She entered the Oakwood library. “Hi,” she said to the librarian. “I'm travelling to Lawndale, could you provide information on that town?”

“Lawndale?” the librarian asked with a sceptical voice.

“Yes,” Lillian projected.

“Sorry, It's not often that we get asked about Lawndale here.”

“But sometimes?” Lillian asked.

“Yes, but they're usually referred to the libraries in Lawndale,” the librarian answered.

'More than one public library in Lawndale?' Lillian wondered. Sounded like her kind of town. The town she still called home in Colorado only had one. “But you do have information on that town right? Not just Oakwood?”

“Don't get cocky young lady. It's just that there is a big rivalry between the towns.”

“I see,” Lillian said with annoyance. 'Surely nothing like that between Springfield and Shelbyville in The Simpsons?'

“I'll check,” the librarian said.

“Good,” Lillian groused.

The librarian returned five minutes later. )
