SpiderGirl and Ninja Talon approached the Oscorp office space from an alleyway. “But what are we looking for?” Ninja Talon asked, as she prepared to pick the lock.

SpiderGirl prepared to web up any security cameras. “Anything that could provide information on the glider.”

“Right, and anything related to expansion in Lawndale?”

“Yes.”

The door opened. SpiderGirl immediately webbed a couple of security cameras. “It should be clear now.”

They searched the office quickly but effectively, with Ninja Talon searching filing cabinets and SpiderGirl looking at the computers. “Not that easy,” the latter said. “They’re all logged out.”

“There is another way,” Ninja Talon said as she looked through a folder.

“You mean, hacking?”

“Yes. I know Andrea does.”

“Andrea,” SpiderGirl considered. “The goth one, right?”

“That’s right.”

“Maybe tomorrow night.”

“Found something,” Ninja Talon said. She put some files on a desk.

“Plans for more buildings in the business park,” SpiderGirl considered.

“More expansion…”

“Yes. Let’s photocopy them.”

“And then what?” Ninja Talon said.

“We’ll slip them under the Sun-Herald’s door.”

“Good idea.”

Verity had held sessions with various clients over the phone (although one had taken the trouble to drive to and from Lawndale) as she waited for Osborn to be ready for another session. She thought about Harry’s worries. ‘Is he sharing them with at least one friend?’ she wondered. Norman had told her that he had made at least one. She knocked on the mansion door, and Bernard opened it.

“He is waiting for you.”

“It happened again,” Norman said. “The glider is out of commission again, mostly due to Ninja Talon, although SpiderGirl and some metahuman with telekinetic powers were there too.”

“I would be remiss if I didn’t say that you probably need more help than I can give. I wasn’t able to help you last night! And I lied to Harry!” Verity said.

“Then stay here, in Lawndale! I need to be here!”

“Tell me why? Is it New York? Or some Oscorp project?”

“Both, besides, Harry has made a friend. I can’t take him away from her,” Norman said.

“But I insist that you need more than what I can provide.”

“Oscorp has developed something that may help.”

“Oh no! I don’t approve of you taking any medication that hasn’t been approved by the FDA!” Verity exclaimed.

“It’s in the process now.”

The Enigma arrived at the Strawberry and started using the telescopes. Soon, she saw something. She recognised it straight away. ‘It’s the attacker, who destroyed the Lawndale Center on Friday night!’ The glider craft was moving slowly over the rooftops, looking for something. ‘Or someone, probably SpiderGirl as he seemed to be focused on her.’

She watched the glider move around for a while longer.

Ninja Talon also saw the glider in the distance, as she looked westwards from the Historia. ‘What can I do alone? I’d need SpiderGirl. But how to get to Glen Oaks Lane without drawing its attention?’ She decided to try anyway.’

The Enigma saw that it was closer to the downtown, rather than over a mainly residential area. ‘But that’s not really helpful, and I can’t get there quickly without a car.’ Was there one nearby? The parking lot had been empty, but that didn’t matter. She quickly ran down the stairs.

Once off the Historia, Ninja Talon quickly ran through the various alleyways that ran through the downtown area.

The Enigma broke into the first car she found parked on a street near the Strawberry, hotwired it and sped off.

SpiderGirl awoke. She found that it was a little early. ‘Does that matter?’ she wondered before getting out of bed.

Up on the roof, she heard something near the downtown. She also heard a racing car somewhere to the northwest. ‘Street racing starting again?’ she wondered, before refocusing downtown. Her eyes widened as she realised what it was; the craft from Groundhog Day! She swung off in that direction.

The Enigma pulled up in an older street, close to where she had seen the glider craft. She leapt out of the car, leaving the engine running. She saw it down the street. She reached out with her powers and tried to grab it….

“Yes,” Sara said.

“Let's not waste time,” Sally said.

However, on Mid Beta they found Kristia waiting for them. “So, you've mobilised some Austin residents against me, Sara Laws? How did I know that you were behind this incursion?”

“Kristia,” Sara said.

“What does that mean?” Sally asked.

“We're helping her,” Cath said.

“Incursion?” Tasha asked.

“None of your business.” Kristia said.

“Out of our way!” Sara said.

Cath could see that the two presidents were giving off hostility (although more was emanating from Kristia than from Sara). “What's the problem?” she asked.

“Problem? You don't need to know what the problem is. Just that there is one!” Kristia projected.

'There is certainly a problem,' Cath thought.

“Sara says that someone may be in danger!” Sally said.

“You may be in danger in a minute!” Kristia said to Sara.

“Listen to Sally, Kristia!” Sara said.

“So, you say that someone is in trouble?” Kristia asked.

“A resident of neither of our colleges. She's in this college right now!” Sara explained.

Kristia sighed. “Which other college?”

Daria was impressed. Brittany had deduced as much as she had, although her word choices were not as eloquent as hers. ‘But what else is new,’ she thought. “So, you think there’s something unusual too?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“Miss Sanderson will be here shortly.”

“That’s good,” Brittany said. “Ms. Barch can be tough to deal with.”

Olivia entered the Library and looked for Daria. She found her talking with Brittany at one of the back tables. “What was this about unusual debris patterns?” she asked.

Daria pushed over a piece of paper. “Something inconsistent at the Lawndale Center.”

She looked over what Daria had found.

“Telekinesis? Really?” Olivia asked.

“It’s only one explanation. How do you explain SpiderGirl?”

“Good point. SpiderGirl’s abilities certainly come from somewhere. But back to this, Telekinesis is still a leap from a girl swinging from webs.”

“Certainly. Which is why I want to see if there are any other explanation to the patterns we found,” Daria said.

“I will have to have a look myself. Probably tomorrow or Wednesday morning.”

“That’s fine. I have other avenues I’m pursuing.”

“Such as?” Olivia asked.

“I’m looking into the newspaper reports since SpiderGirl first appeared.”

Goldberry saw the four Hobbits hesitate after stepping over the threshold. “Enter, good guests!”

The Hobbits timidly stepped further into the room, bowed awkwardly.

She sprang up and ran laughing towards them. “Enter, good guests!”

Excerpt from: Spider Quinn
As she headed out, she knew that she would talk more with her mother that night.

Ninja Talon arrived on the roof of Lawndale High and changed to the usual cheerleader persona of Brittany Taylor. She paused as she came to the door downwards. She knew what she was going to do, break up with Kevin Thompson. ‘I’m sure I’ll find him before homeroom, calling Mack ‘Mack Daddy’ in that oblivious way. And I’m sure I’ll run into Quinn too.’ She opened the door.

Once down in the school, she almost ran into Quinn as she rounded a corner.

“Brit?” Quinn asked. “Are you looking for Kevin?”

“Happy Birthday!” Brittany said, as she threw her arms around her friend and superhero partner (although not before making sure no one was looking). “Yes. I’m still annoyed that he wasn’t at the play.”

“Thanks, Brit. I’m sure he has some reason.”

“It will be just an excuse!”

“Probably,” Quinn said. Her tone changed, matching one she sometimes used as SpiderGirl. “Daria found something.”

“What was it?” Brittany asked as she stepped back.

“Daria was at Daddy’s grave…”

Brittany wasn’t sure what to make of what Quinn had said. “So, it’s based on Shakespeare?” she asked.

“Yes, on his sonnets.”

Brittany twirled her hair. “I have read most of them.”

“Maybe you could ask Daria if you could have a look.”

“I’ll do that, sometime today, or tonight at the party.”

At lunch time, Daria met up with Ted-Dewit Clinton as they both left a class. He looked at the poem. “The sentiment is nice, but the fact you found it in the graveyard reminds me of the Amityville Horror.”

Daria was surprised. “You’ve seen the Amityville Horror?”

“Yes. Robert showed me it. Very interesting.”

“Robert?”

“Yes, it was before he started going out with Angie. Definitely before SpiderGirl appeared,” Ted answered.

“It’s a little romantic, from a certain point of view. But then, I’ve never had a love letter before.”

“Many people in school send love letters.”
“Ah!” Daria called out as she reached the ground a little quickly.

“Sorry,” the Enigma said. “I’m still getting used to this.”

“But you have powers don’t you?” Daria asked as she let go. “I noticed something just then; our trajectory changed a little as we came to the ground.”

“Yes. Telekinesis,” the Enigma answered. Her hands then glowed with purple. “And energy projections.”

“I see,” Daria responded. “And you haven’t mastered them yet.”

“No,” The Enigma admitted. “But my mentor is continuing to teach me, despite not wanting me to do this.”

“I’m sure they’re looking out for you.”

“Yes. But let’s go. I’m sure you don’t want to take too long, given it’s a school night.”

“I’ll manage,” Daria responded.

They quietly walked quickly along the street.

They reached the Lawndale Center twenty minutes later. “My mentor and I helped during the situation,” the Enigma said.

“And the news reports focused on SpiderGirl, Ninja Talon and the Shadow,” Daria added as she wrote in her notebook. ‘Enigma’s mentor helped.”

“I hid behind that tree,” the Enigma said, pointing at a tree. “And I shot energy projections at the attacker’s craft. It was difficult, as I didn’t want to hit SpiderGirl and the other two.”

Daria wrote that down. “What did your mentor do?”

“She said that she found an out of the way place and held up the roof, where it was threatening to collapse, with her powers.”

“So, she’s not a vigilante?”

“No,” the Enigma answered. “At least not in Lawndale, and not recently.”

‘That might explain the strange debris patterns. If the Enigma’s mentor was intervening with telekinetic powers.’

Daria and Jane arrived at the Historia. “So, what did you find?” Jane asked as they entered.

“Not much beyond what the Sun-Herald reported,” Daria admitted. “The attacker used missiles to destroy the Hall. There was what looked like scraps of fabric lying around, like the vigilantes were injured as they fought the attacker.”

‘That’s true,’ Jane thought. ‘SpiderGirl did get scratched.’

“But there’s not much more. I would need to get closer.”

“Maybe you need to approach the police,” Jane suggested.

“Maybe, but would they give me the time of day?” Daria asked as they came up to the counter.

SpiderGirl arrived at the Giant Strawberry. ‘I’m sure there’s nothing here,’ she thought. She swung up to the top and looked through a telescope towards the Historia. ‘It looks fine from here.’ She then looked around at the rest of the town as it was visible from that vantage point.

“Daria!” It was Stacy, who was also working that day.

“Hi, Stacy.”

“Mom says you were running around town yesterday.”

“I was, I’m sure she told you I left here with Sandi,” Daria said.

“Yes. I hope you didn’t come to blows.”

“I didn’t, although I was tempted to.”

“Thank goodness,” Stacy said.

“I found out about the street racing.”

“You didn’t already know?”

“No, and getting to the Strawberry in less than five minutes from here was slightly shocking,” Daria said.

“In the daytime? She never used to do that!”

“She did say that she’s a rebel now.”

“I guess that explains it,” Stacy said, although she sounded uncertain.

“Also, your mom also said you’re holding up well given what happened Friday.”

“I guess I’m still taking it in.”

“Every person is different,” Daria said.

“Good, because some others are a lot worse off than others,” Jane responded with a look at Kalina.

“Understood,” Leung said.

“We’ll be off,” SpiderGirl said.

“Wait! You need to take some statements,” Leung said.

SpiderGirl then swung away, Ninja Talon following her.

“And Dafoanairi?” Leung asked.

“She’s gone too,” one of the other agents responded.

Leung sighed. “Of course.”

Dafoanairi looked back from where she was hiding behind a tree between the Creekside pathway and the Creek itself. ‘I don’t want the FBI to know my secret identity. That would be too much. I can trust Peterson. Leung, I’m not sure of.’ She then continued walking, to continue along the path before heading back to the Historia.

Meanwhile, SpiderGirl and Ninja Talon arrived on the Historia’s roof themselves.

“That was intense,” SpiderGirl said. “A lot more so than when we rescued Sarah Robyn.”

“But not as much as Groundhog Day.”

“Or as much as when we fought the Goblin a week later.”

“I agree,” Ninja Talon said. “But Jane and the critics are safe now.”

“They are, but they have been through a lot, especially Kalina. I’m sure she’s going to need therapy.”

“I do too.”

“But we worked well with Dafoanairi despite her inexperience,” SpiderGirl said.

“But she’s had more experience since the solarium, I can tell.”

“I can tell too.”

“I need to go, I’m wet through,” Ninja Talon said.

“Oh, of course. I’ll see you later, before the play.”

Ninja Talon then headed southwards, towards home, as SpiderGirl swung off to the west.

It wasn’t far from the dock to the FBI field office, which lay somewhere between the Historia and the High School. Kalina was immediately taken to the psychologist assigned there for assessment. Leung decided to interview Jane first.

“Has my brother been notified that I have been rescued?” Jane asked.

“Peterson called while you were on the Lake. Trent was asleep, according to a Jesse Moreno who answered.”

“He has narcolepsy, but Jesse will let him know when he’s awake.”

“We have tried the Morgendorffers but no one was home,” Leung said.

“That’s not unusual for a Saturday these days.”

Jane looked at the board, where Leung had laid out the case, including the details Leung had laid out about Daria, Quinn, Joey and Robert.

“Motive,” she said.

“What can you tell us?”

“Not much more. He just subjected us to his plays that were all visuals and no actual story. Made this artist annoyed. He gave us plenty of food and water and let us alone. Whatever was done to Kalina was done before he took me from the theater!”

“I see. He left a message for us when he escaped. He said that part of his part of his motive was the Morgendorffers’ ambition,” Leung said.

“Ambition?” Jane considered. “Both Daria and Quinn want the Historia to be a force of good in Lawndale. As a place where people can come together despite the troubles out on the streets.”

“And that’s all?”

“I know Daria. She wants to know what’s going on, with the vigilantes and rising crime and all. But I’m sure that would be the same of any similar teen in her position,” Jane answered.

“And Quinn?”

“She’s similar, but she wants to use her grief in a constructive way. She wants to get past her past as a self-absorbed girl and use her social nature as a way to connect people in positive ways.”

Leung thought about Jane’s answers. They made a lot of sense. But how did it connect to Beck’s motives? He was still stumped. “You can stay a little longer, Ms. Lane.”

“Of course.”

At the same time, Daria emerged from the Morgendorffers’ apartment in the Historia, having showered after being soaked during the rescue mission. She was still thinking about the unexpected familiarity of SpiderGirl. ‘I haven’t got it from Ninja Talon, and I didn’t from the Enigma before I figured out she’s Sandi,’ she thought as she took out a notebook. She paused.

Who SpiderGirl isn’t
Jane Lane
Sandi Griffin

That still left a lot of people. ‘But I’m sure it isn’t Quinn.’

She entered the café for lunch and saw that Peterson was waiting for her. ‘Of course,’ she thought as she went up to the counter.

“That must have been difficult,” Peterson said to Daria after she had joined her.

True to her word, Sandi pulled up into the Giant Strawberry’s parking lot with screeching rubber just over four minutes later. Daria stopped trembling and got out of the car. ‘How did she manage to drift around those corners?’ she wondered. Were teens in Lawndale secretly street racing? ‘If so, I hope Quinn isn’t involved.’ It was another thing for her to look into.

“What are you looking for?” Sandi asked as she locked the car.

“You’re staying?”

“I get the feeling you will want to go elsewhere shortly, just as you did at the Historia.”

“A wild goose chase across Lawndale,” Daria commented. “Probably.”

“Again…”

“The vigilantes.”

“Only one time, SpiderGirl was mentioned being here,” Sandi said.

“When was that?”

“Around the time the Fashion Club ended.”

“There may still be something,” Daria responded, “Come on.”

Daria and Sandi cooperated in their search of the Strawberry and then climbed to the top and looked out over Lawndale. “Where to next?” Sandi asked.

“Probably back to Jane’s,” Daria responded as she looked through a telescope at High Hills Park.

“Not that much of a wild goose chase if it’s only two places.”

“Good point,” Daria said as she moved the telescope southwards. “The Mall.”

“Which one?” Sandi asked.

“The Lawndale Mall, but that would take the rest of the afternoon and I’m sure my sister told you I hate shopping, even window shopping. The parking lot looks as full as ever. I guess the term ‘retail therapy’ is accurate.”

‘Why has this turned into a wild goose chase?’ she asked herself.

“I wished it to South Dubbo,” Mel said in a regretful tone.

“He’s lying! He hid it somewhere in this house. I’m going to search the attic for it,” Dennis said. He still didn’t believe what Mel was saying. ‘She is trying to trick me away from here,’ he thought.

“Nicola and Mel, I suggest you lock Dennis in the shed,” Daniel said. He thought that having Dennis running around Dubbo was a bad idea, given the current situation.

“That seems rather extreme!” Anna Marie said.

“A shuttle has left the wormhole,” Katelyn reported.

“I’m reading a Vulcan lifesign,” Daniel said.

“I can explain why we were doing what we're doing, even if he would anticipate my answer.”

“True, but he will help us retake Kathiannah. Maintain pursuit course.”

Voyager exited the wormhole, and just in time.

“The wormhole is changing position,” Kim reported.

“Mr. Paris, resume course for the Ixaroan Homeworld.”

“Aye, Captain.”

“I'll be in the ready room.”

Daniel and Katelyn were approaching Kathiannah. “Tuvok is hailing again,” Katelyn reported.

“We may as well answer him,” Daniel said.

“Sure. This is Ensign Hawkins.”

“You disobeyed Captain Janeway's orders,” Tuvok stated. “And there is the fact that you modified an escape pod without permission.

“Yes, we admit that,” Katelyn said.

“But now we must plan how to re-take Kathiannah from the terrorists. As I am the ranking officer, I am in command.”

“No doubt about that,” Daniel said.

Tuvok raised an eyebrow, but didn't respond to his sarcasm. “I know you added phasers to the pod as well as the warp drive. We shall force the aft shields down. I can land in the shuttle bay while you dock.”

“We were planning on that,” Katelyn said.

“Two vessels would be better than one.”

“Ready?” Jane asked.

“Of course,” SpiderGirl said. “I’ll take you first.”

“No, take Kalina first,” Jane said. “Then we can proceed in order of abduction.”

“Why?” Ninja Talon asked.

Jane shrugged her shoulders.

“OK, Kalina!” SpiderGirl said. “Before Beck knows what we’re doing.”

“Right!” Kalina said. She walked over, grabbed onto the superheroine and closed her eyes. “Now!”

“Not so tight!” SpiderGirl said. “Here we go.”

SpiderGirl swung, and Kalina’s scream, along with the thunder, almost overwhelmed her.

She set her down on the roof. “Ow! My hearing is enhanced, you know!”

Kalina huddled on the roof, shivering in the rain, her eyes remaining closed. “Sorry, I didn’t know.”

“I’ll get Oliver.”

Ninja Talon looked out the window as she waited for SpiderGirl to come back. A flash of lightning and she saw Dafoanairi approaching. ‘That’s going to make things interesting,’ she thought. She still didn’t think she was Daria. She glanced at where Jane was guarding the door.

Dafoanairi saw SpiderGirl swing back into the room. She looked up at where the critic was huddling on the roof. ‘I have to get there,’ she decided. She looked at where the Enigma was still battling the traps. ‘Just as well these Doc Martins are waterproof,’ she thought, as she was wearing her usual boots, which were easy to hide with the cloak. She then realised that the rope had run out. ‘Just as well I have a spare.’

“Ok, Oliver,” SpiderGirl said.

“I’m coming, I won’t scream.”

He then held on and they swung up.

Kalina was afraid and soaked. She winced as another peal of thunder crashed in around her. She was afraid to open her eyes, to see the height she was at. She then heard SpiderGirl land with Oliver. “OK, I’ll get the other critic and Talon will come with Jane.”

“Be quick!” Kalina said. “I want out of this rain.”

“I’ll be as quick as I can,” SpiderGirl quipped, before she swung back down.

Oliver than tried to take one of her hands, but she swatted it away. “Leave me alone!”

The Enigma came up to the door and pushed it in telekinetically. “Quentin Beck! You, like, have made me mad!”

13 Aftermath and Investigations
At the Historia, various Lawndale High students were talking about what the previous night’s events meant.

Stacy Rowe was thankful that she was working, otherwise she would have been worrying about the possibility of another attack.

She came up to Jodie Landon and Mack Mackenzie, where they were conversing in a corner.

“…Like, it’s not likely to happen again, right?” Mack asked.

“The person wasn’t caught, so it is likely to happen again,” Jodie said. “I don’t like to admit this, but it seems that SpiderGirl did good. Her powers allowed her to evacuate a lot of people before she got distracted.”

“But how soon?” Stacy asked in her usual worried tone.

“That is the question,” Jodie said.

“And SpiderGirl is one person,” Stacy said.

“But Ninja Talon and the Shadow were there too,” Mack pointed out.

“True,” Stacy said. She took a deep breath. “May I take your order?”

“White tea,” Mack said.

“Black Coffee,” Jodie added.

“Sure. It will be a while.”
