Quinn and Stacy
Esteem?
The blue Lexus was approaching the High School. "Quinn, I just want to know your mother and I realise it's not easy moving to a whole new town," Jake Morgendorffer said.
Quinn looked at her father with a puzzled expression. She was glad when they finally left Highland for a suburb on the eastern seaboard. "No problem," she said as her father pulled up at the drop off point.
"Don't get upset if it takes the other kids a little while to warm up to you."
Quinn shook her head in annoyance as her father drove away. "Hi! You're cool," a girl with her hair in pigtails said. "What's Your Name?"
"Quinn Morgendorffer."
"Cool Name," another girl stated.
"Will you go out with me?" a red haired boy asked.
"Probably. I just got here!"
Usually Angela Li, Principal of Lawndale High, could tell when a new student was trouble. She could tell that the girl with the long curly red hair was going to be trouble. "As you can see, our Lawndale High students take great pride in their school. That's why you'll each be taking a small psychological exam to spot any little clouds on the horizon as you sail the students seas of Lawndale High."
"No one told me about any test!" the girl objected.
Ms. Li glared at the girl, and made a note for Mrs. Manson...
Mrs. Manson, Lawndale High's Psychologist held up a peice of paper. "Now, what do you see here?"
"It's a picture of two people talking," Quinn said with a slightly annoyed tone.
"That's right," Mrs. Manson said. "Can you make up a little story about what it is they're discussing?"
"Let's see... they've been going out for awhile, and he's upset because other people keep asking her out, and she saying she can't help it if she's attractive and popular, and besides, nobody ever said they were going steady, and if he does want to go steady he's got to do a lot better than movie, burger, back seat, movie, burger, back seat, because there are plenty of guys with bigger back seats waiting to take her someplace nice!"
"Very good, Quinn," Mrs. Manson said. That's certainly what Ms. Li wanted to hear, but maybe she had been warned beforehand?
That evening, at the Morgendorffer family's new home...
"...Then they asked me to join the pep squad. They said I didn't have to try out, but I said, "Look, I'm new here. Give me a chance to get used to things." So, for now, I'm vice president of the Fashion Club, and that's it," Quinn said, finishing her description of her day at school.
"Sounds like a well-thought out decision, honey," Jake said.
"As long as you can join pep squad later -- if you want," her mother, Helen stated. "Never know how much we can handle until we try though."
Then the phone rang.
"I hope it's not the booster society again!" Quinn said.
Helen answered the phone. "Hello?"
"Yes."
"Yes, she's my daughter."
"I see. Listen, will this require any parent-teacher conferences or anything, and if so, is this the sort of thing my assistant can handle?"
"OK, great. Bye!" She hung up and turned to Quinn. "You took a psychological test at school today?"
"They said we wouldn't be graded!" Quinn said.
"It wasn't that kind of test."
"Oh."
"They say you have low self esteem."
"What, that really stinks, Quinn!"
"Easy, Jake. Focus!"
"I don't have low self esteem!"
"I say!"
"It's a mistake!" she groused.
"You still have to go to the class," Helen said.
"Why?" Quinn asked petulantly.
"It may be they think you may cause problems."
'Great!' Quinn thought. She decided not to tell her new friends.
