The first thing he noticed when she entered the room was the haunted look in her eyes. There were, of course, other details, but that was what drew his attention. She looked around nervously at the many people in the room. Did she think that she had nothing to say? That if she did say something that people would consider her an ignoramus?
‘Of course she isn’t,’ he thought, with a shake of his head. It was more that she was anxious due to not knowing most of the people in the room. She was still looking around, hands twitching nervously at her sides. One thing was certain. He was sure she didn’t know what to say to the people she didn’t know. ‘And she hasn’t seen me over here.’ That, and the fact that she had had a rough time recently. He decided to walk over and get her attention. She quickly saw him coming and her face brightened up.
She waved. Hello! They both closed the distance quickly. Then she appeared nervous again. He knew why. He was nervous himself. Did he know her well enough to be asking what he was going to ask her? He hoped so. He asked her how her classes were going. She responded with a glare, and a playful slap to his upper arm. That wasn’t what he had wanted to ask! He knew that learning a new language was difficult! As he rubbed the sore spot, he considered that he was still nervous himself. He looked back to her and saw that she was starting to breath quicker.
He grabbed her hands in a comforting gesture. Relax. She calmed down, and the spark returned to her eyes. He decided that it was time. No point in delaying it. He then asked if she would like a dance.
She agreed with a nod, of course. They then walked to the dance floor hand in hand.
‘This will be a good night,’ he thought as they rubbed each other’s lower cheeks while dancing slowly.
