Troubles of Invitation
Brittany Taylor was having difficulty in Art. She liked drawing in art, but she always had difficulty drawing three dimensional pictures. She sighed and tried to draw a cube again. She did it again! It was all wonky! “Ms. Defoe!”
The teacher came over. “Having trouble?” she asked.
“Yes! I can’t seem to get the cube right!”
Defoe looked at Brittany’s work so far. “Have you heard of single point perspective?”
“Um… Maybe?” Brittany responded.
The teacher sighed. “Try to imagine a point somewhere.”
“Um, sure,” Brittany said. She chose a spot above the paper.
“Now use that as a point to draw the edges of the cube towards.”
“OK,” Brittany said.
“I’ll come back later and see how you do.”
It took Brittany most of the class time to figure it out. Defoe returned and saw her work. “You did well!”
“Thanks.”
After class Brittany’s boyfriend Kevin Thompson was talking to his team mate, Michael ‘Mack’ Mackenzie. “Yo, Mack Daddy. You coming to Brittany's party?”
“Don't call me that, okay?” Mack said with annoyance. “What's this party for, anyway?”
“Um…” Kevin said as he tried to think.
“Stop if it starts to hurt,” Mack said, not sure that he was joking.
“Her birthday was last month,” Kevin said. “I helped her exchange all her presents.”
“Even yours?” Mack asked with the same incredulous tone as before.
“Yeah. Then she had a saleslady explain the difference between perfume and cologne. Interesting stuff, bro.” He paused as he closed his locker. “Now I remember! The party's to celebrate her parents being out of town.” He noticed some of his teammates approaching. “Hey, Joey, Jeffy, Jeremy.”
“I’m Jamie!” the last named one groused.
“Whatever,” Kevin responded.
“Uh, if we're invited,” Joey Black responded.
“You're on the team, dudes. When a cheerleader has a party, all the football players are automatically invited,” Kevin said.
“It's on page six of the play book,” Mack said.
Kevin saw the new girl, Quinn Morgendorffer approaching. “Hey, Quinn, what about you?”
“Can I?” Quinn asked.
“Sure!”
That afternoon, Quinn was over at Stacy’s. She had to admit, her manga collection was a little weird, but intriguing. “These are interesting,” she said as she looked through another book. “How long have you been interested?”
“Several years,” Stacy answered.
Quinn turned a page. “Wow! These are hardly dressed.”
Stacy gave a nervous giggle. “Yeah… Some are like that. Not all of them.”
“What do you like about them?”
“It’s the stories. About teens who struggle in their everyday lives and yet are able to overcome their difficulties with determination and the help of their friends.”
“So, you sort of see yourself there?” Quinn asked.
“That’s right,” Stacy answered with a smile.
“Do you think I’d like them?”
“Probably. I mean, the Japanese clothing designs are interesting, so there’s that.”
Quinn turned another page and saw that the previously nearly unclad character had dressed much more appropriately. “They certainly are.”
“Sandi thinks it’s nerdy, so I don’t talk to her about them.”
“Really?”
Stacy nodded.
There was a pause in the conversation as Quinn read through the volume, finding that the story did hold her attention. It ended with an invitation to a party, reminding her of her conversation with Kevin. “By the way, I was invited to Brittany’s party.”
“You were?” Stacy asked.
“Yes,” Quinn answered.
“I know Sandi is going. She was talking about it as we left school,” Stacy said. “I’m not sure if I want to go if she’s going.”
“I’ll be going,” Quinn said.
“I’ll think about it,” Stacy said.
Quinn nodded.
At home, Quinn thought about it as she looked over possible outfits for the party. “Sheer, semi-sheer, or opaque?” She picked up another one. “Textured!” Of course, that was just the skirt. ‘How to help Stacy?’ That had been on her mind most of the afternoon. ‘I guess I have to play it by ear.’ She looked towards the closet. There were 72 more hours to go.
Saturday afternoon. Stacy was still going through her closet, when Quinn showed up. “Hi, Quinn.”
“Hi, Stacy.”
“I’m still not ready! I’m not sure what to wear!”
“Oh! I’ll help you,” Quinn said.
“Thanks!”
It took a while, but Quinn helped Stacy get ready.
“Thanks, Quinn!”
Quinn and Stacy arrived at the Taylor’s place on time. Quinn found that Joey, Jeffy and the other one, were already there. “Quinn!” Joey called out.
“Hi, Joey,” Quinn said.
“Just because people are cliquey and snotty is no reason not to like them,” Stacy murmured.
“Huh?” Jeffy asked.
“Never mind,” Stacy said.
“Sure.”
