13. 007 and Hernandez
Night had fallen when 007 approached the Bodleian Library. He was sure it was shut. Fortunately, he knew there was an underground entrance on the western side.

When he got to the entrance, he could see that it had already been opened. There was evidence of it having simply been pushed open. He sighed. He knew others were after whatever the device was. He looked around and slowly entered the passage

He found the object where the report stated it was, but there were others already there! They immediately moved to fight him. Why did it always have to be so?

Soon, he had defeated the enemy agents and grabbed the artifact. But then he heard something. “Who’s there?” he asked.

There was no answer. He then went back the way he came.

Shortly after he emerged outside, he heard something behind him. He turned and asked. “Is someone there?” Shortly afterwards there was a strange electronic sound emanating from the passageway. He ran back, but found nobody. ‘I better get back to London,’ he decided.

On the way back to London, especially after leaving Oxford, he felt that he was being followed. It was just as well the motorway had been completed the previous year. He stayed alert, prepared for anything. Suddenly he saw a motorcycle headlamp behind him. ‘Uh oh!’
Before he could react, he saw another two vehicles veer off the opposite side of the motorway.

With the two (Russian?) agents defeated by the mysterious motorbike rider, 007 pulled over. The motorcycle rider pulled up behind him.

He took his gun out from his shoulder holster and stepped out of the car.

“Thanks for the intervention,” he said. “But I would like to know who you are.”

The motorcyclist took off her helmet, letting her blonde hair fall loose over her shoulders. “Daniela Hernandez.”

“Bond. James Bond.” He sized up this Hernandez, she had an Oxford accent.

Hernandez looked at this James Bond. He was looking at her in more ways than one. ‘What to say?’ she pondered. “What was your objective?” he asked.

“You obtained something in Oxford,” she said.

“You’re not taking it,” Bond stated.

“It is something you may not be ready for,” Hernandez shot back. ‘Careful, don’t antagonise him.’ Too bad she didn’t have time to redesign a phaser to look like a gun of the period. Then she could have stunned him easily.

“What do you mean?”

“It is something technological isn’t it?”

“Yes,” Bond answered in a guarded tone. “But I trust my Quartermaster to be able to work it out.”

“That’s what I’m afraid of.”

Bond looked closely at the pensive expression on Hernandez’ face. She was clearly hiding a lot of things. ‘I need to do something, before she tries something desperate,’ he thought. He was sure of one thing. That asking her who she worked for wouldn’t be a good idea.”

“I can let you look at it somewhere secure.”

“Sure.”

As Bond got back in the car, Hernandez contacted the Toronto. “I’m going to follow him to a safehouse.”

“Are you sure that’s wise?” Lawson asked.

“There’s not much choice. I don’t want to hurt him. I’m sure I hurt those Warsaw Pact agents…”

“Right.”

Bond arrived at the Safehouse in a western London suburb 20 minutes later. Hernandez was right behind him. He grabbed the object from the car and went to the front door. “I’ll let you look at it.”

“Sure,” Hernandez said in a sarcastic tone.

You have it, 007?” Q asked once he was got a hold of.

“I have it. I shall bring it in tomorrow,” Bond replied. He was watching Hernandez as she examined the device he had recovered.

Very good 007. But is there a reason for a delay?

“I’ll fill you in tomorrow.”

I’ll look forward to it. But without all the sordid details!

“Bye.” It seemed Q knew him too well.

Hernandez listened to Bond’s side of the conversation. She had to somehow get it out of the Safehouse and aboard the Toronto during the night. Infiltrating MI6 Headquarters would be incredibly risky. She examined the device again. She wouldn’t be able to tell much without a tricorder. Maybe there were examination tools available in the Safehouse? But would Bond allow her to search. ‘I’ll try anyway.”

Bond hung up from the conversation with Q and turned to Hernandez. “What would you like to do now?”

“Dinner,” she answered. “You know how to cook?”

“Of course,” he answered. So far Hernandez had been cold and professional. That would make it difficult to ‘charm’ her. Of course, he was going to try.

Soon, the smell of cooking filled the small kitchen. Even so, Daniela expected that James remained aware of what was going on. “Aren’t you curious, what we’re having?” James asked.

“Of course,” Daniela answered.

“Something called a pasta bake. I picked it up on a mission in the United States.”

“Smells delicious.”

“I suspect that I’ll find that something else is delicious,” James said.

“Maybe, maybe not,” came a slightly playful response.

Lawson had parked the Toronto in a nearby park. He turned to Albert. “This is going to be difficult.”

“In what way?”

“Waiting while Hernandez deals with that Agent. Anything could happen.”

“Then we’ll be ready to jump to the rescue,” Albert decided.

“I can see how things can go wrong.”

Bond served the meal. He saw that Hernandez was nervous. “So, you learned about a pasta bake on a mission in the States?” she asked.

“Yes,” Bond answered.

“You must learn a lot of things on your missions,” she observed.

“Of course.”
