In Wellington, Texas, Jean Couillard, the last native speaker of Tejas Occitan, dies of old age.

Microsoft releases Windows 8, which has improved touch screen support over previous Microsoft OS’s such as Windows Vista and 7.

Africa
A coup d'etat occurs in Guinea-Bissau.

In Mali, the Tuareg forces capture Timbuktu and the surrounding areas.


Europe
Scotland votes to remain as part of the United Kingdom in the latest independence referendum. (The Scottish National Party insisted on holding one at this time.) Further powers are devolved from Westminster to Holyrood.

Iceland leaves the European Union.

This year marks the last time the United States would participate in the Eurovision song contest.

Russia pushes the Dagastani forces back over their borders.


Asia
The war in Afghanistan continues.

The Syrian Civil War continues.

The Yemeni Civil War continues.


Oceania
Niue enters into Free Association with New Zealand (joining the Realm of New Zealand, so the number of Commonwealth Realms drops from 17 to 16).

Janeway turned to Q Junior. “Begin launch sequence,” she ordered.

Voyager’s shuttle bay door opened and the Delta Flyer launched.

“Of course,” he answered. So far Hernandez had been cold and professional. That would make it difficult to ‘charm’ her. Of course, he was going to try.
