66. Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Rewatch. With a strange cloud approaching Earth, the recently refitted USS Enterprise is rushed into service. The overall story is rather good. The various characters are also presented very well, particularly the main trio, Kirk, Spock and McCoy. The main part of the story is the crew investigating the nature of the threat. That it turns out to be an augmented old NASA probe seeking it’s creator is poignant and thought provoking. A good, if slow, film. 7.5/10.
37 Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Rewatch. The first Star Trek movie. Admiral James T. Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise are called into action when a machine of incredible power approaches Earth. Overall this is a good story, but it is rather slow. Not for nothing is it called 'The Motion-less Picture'. However it is no less interest for that slowness. (No need to be looking at the Enterprise, as pretty as she is, or V'Ger's cloud. for quite so long.)Therefore there is a rather slow buildup to the climax, as the Enterprise approaches V'Ger.
However, it is still well written. The questions that the crew ask regarding V'Ger and the nature of same are questions that most people would ask in similar situations. The caution, and yet haste, in which the crew approaches the strange object is well realized. The confrontation between Decker and Kirk over command of the Enterprise is well done. So is the conversation between Decker and Illia about the way their past relationship ended (by Decker leaving Delta IV without saying goodbye).
Spock goes through a journey in the film too. From his attempt at Kolinahr, to his mind meld with V'Ger, he is forced to reach out to others, and to accept his human side (as V'Ger is completely logical). The differences (and similarities) between Illia and the probe that was based on her are also shown well. A relatively good, if slow, film. 7.5/10.
