The Nordic Secession Movement is successful. Or rather, only partly successful. Whilst referenda had been held before in the United Kingdom, this is the first time one is used on such a large scale. After years of tensions (mainly due to the increasing prominence of the English language over the other languages) a referendum is held in the Nordic Nations on Independence from the United Kingdom. While the Nordic Secession Movement had been active in all the Nordic Nations, the referendum is only successful in Denmark, Scania and Sweden.

A major contributing factor to the Referendum going ahead was that the Danish parties in particular were being obstructive in Westminster. Hardly any bills were passing.
But the background was, the increasing prominence of the English Language over the other languages in the United Kingdom, with Nordic (increasingly referred to as 'Danish', or 'Swedish', depending on the dialect), Welsh, Brittanias, Icelandic, Greenlandic, Scots, the various forms of Gaelic, Cornish, Manx, Sami and Russian (in Norrland mainly, but also in northern Norway and northern Sweden) decreasing in importance.

Nordic Secession Referendum results:
Within the United Kingdom:
Denmark: 70% Independence

Aceh: 65% Remain
Borneo: 72.5% Remain
India overall: 88% Remain
Malaya: 69.5% Remain

Oceania
It is in this region that the rift between Britain and Denmark would have the biggest impact, leading to nearly six decades of war and distrust.

Australia: 60% Nordic Independence
With a majority Nordic population (either Danish, Norwegian, Swedish or Westmarkic), it would be obvious in hindsight that Australia would choose to split from London. Even so, there would be some discontent. The loyalists would later end up moving, mainly to Queensland, New England and New Zealand, over the next decade. The same would occur with Nordic populations moving from those Dominions to Australia.

Alectown West, New South Wales, Australia 7th May 1905
Alexander Draper re-entered the farmhouse, carrying the paper. He saw his wife, Agnes, was resting while the dinner was cooking on the stove. She got up and walked over to hug him. “So, what is going to happen?” she asked.

He unfolded the broadsheet, and pointed to the headline.

1920
North America
The North American War/Implosion continues. As Little Egypt continues to collapse, Great Lakes and the United States co-ordinate their various armies more and more. This co-ordination would be one reason why the Plantagenet Plan would fail. The separatists in Kentucky and Missouri are also defeated.

Of course, more is going on than the War. The 1920 election for instance. Incumbent Republican Mark Marquez wins re-election.

Africa
Minor colonial skirmishes.

The 'Spanish' Influenza pandemic finally burns out in the Congo.

Late 1921
North America
Canada
Canadian historians would be divided on whether it was Canada, or Great Lakes who started hostilities. Both had been preparing for war for a while. The same could be said for the hostilities between Canada and Nordamerika. Even so, the Canadian forces manage to go quite far into Great Lakes before the tables are turned.

Great Lakes
Great Lakes historians (in the years between the two wars) and later American historians would disagree whether Great Lakes instigated hostilities or not. According to the interwar Great Lakes historians, it was the Canadians, but according to their American successors, Great Lakes.

Dakota
Dakota invades Canada in response to the other two major TUNA members being attacked.

Cascadia
The same as with Great Lakes, similar disagreement would ensue. But in fact it was the Canadians and Japanese invading together...

Virginia
According to the Wellington Plan, the Virginians invade Great Lakes and the United States similtaneously. But while Britain had sent additional troops according to the Plan, they aren't enough, and the Americans quickly invade Virginia...

United States
War had been expected for years. Tensions between the United States and the Japanese in the west had always been high. However, the Department of Defence had prepared. Even so, the Virginians and Japanese capture some territory before being thrown back. The British attempts to land troops in South Carolina and Georgia are defeated.

Spanish attempts to land troops on Cuba are defeated.

In Kentucky, most of the infrastructure damage from the Implosion has been repaired. The Territorial administration begins preparing for a referendum on independence on Statehood or Independence. But the War will force Congress' hand...

Mexico
The Japanese make some progress into Mexican territory before being thrown back.

Africa
With the onset of war in Europe, Turkey invades Israeli Cyrenacia.

Europe
United Kingdom
Prime Minister Mosely holds a Special Meeting of the Imperial Council in mid July. Preparations for war are complete.
Two plans for war in North America are put forward. The Wellington Plan. A coordinated invasion of the United States with Japan. (And possibily dividing the nation along the Mississippi River.)
And the Plantagenet Plan, to conquer Great Lakes from two directions.

It is at the at the instigation of the Imperial Council that the various Dominions declare war on their neighbours.

France
It is a 'random maneouvre' over the border, that causes Germany to declare war upon France. This is the main casus belli.
The French claim it's a random maneouvre that lead to the declaration of war, but it was a deliberate provocation.

Spain
The Spanish Government declares war on Germany in response to the declaration of war on France., thinking that this would help bring unity in the New World colonies.

Germany
Tensions with France had been rising for some time. When the 'random manoevre' occurs, Hiedler is ready, and immediately declares war.

Intermarium
With Germany going to war against France, Casimir III declares war against Russia. The Russians quickly turn the tables, and penetrate into Intermarium territory. But, the tables had been turned again by the end of the year.

Canada
It would be noted by future historians that the Seelie Court had been acting behind the scenes to encourage the Canadian government to extricate itself from InterCon control (given that most Canadians had benefited from InterCon’s actions).

Ottawa, 7th February 2005
Prime Minister Stephen Harper waited in his office for his next appointment. He was nervous, meeting with representatives of the Seelie Court was always ‘touch and go’. And then there was the fact that they felt, creepy. Suddenly, the Seelie Court Representative appeared. “Welcome,” he said.

“Good Morning, Prime Minister,” the Representative said.

“You have the information on the officials?”

“Yes. The information is being handed over to the Intelligence Service as we speak.”

“Very good.” It would give him leverage over the Directors as the Government negotiated the terms of Canada’s independence over the next several years.

Hollywood continues to recover from the disruption caused by the Flare. Star Wars Episode II is re-released in February, given that its distribution was co-incidental with the Flare. Episode III – Revenge of the Sith is released in early May. It soon breaks Box Office records. (And it’s more obvious that Lucas has based the Jedi on the Qone Gesedai of medieval Asia.)

Oregon gains statehood, with vampire covens largely pacified, or driven north into Washington.

31 October 2005
Ivy Sophia looked at the small city ahead of her. Goldendale was the first settlement of size she had come across since fleeing into the Washington Territory. She wanted to find a place where a Vampire who was willing to change her ways would be accepted. ‘But maybe I’ll have to go all the way to Canada,’ she considered. ‘But at least Halloween is less hectic than it was before the Flare.’

The war against the Lemonsaurs continues.

Hurricane Katrina proves too much for the failing weather control systems in Louisiana.

In Cheyenne Mountain, it is found that the Portal Gate no longer works, with connection to the gate in Chichen Itza no longer possible. It seems that the ancient Portal Gate Network is as much a victim of the Solar Flare as all the advanced Cyber technology.

President Bush looked over the reports.

The jungles in the Darien region continue to emerge with a vengeance. Overland transport between the two American continents would soon become nearly impossible.

Chapter 1 - Azores
29 September 2018, The Azores Autonomous Region, Portugal, just outside the city of Ponta Delaga
The TARDIS had materialised in a forest. Sabir emerged from the TARDIS first. Though he came from an era when world travel was commonplace (but not as commonplace as later) he had never been to the Azores. He breathed in the air, hardly any pollution could be smelt. “It is peaceful,” he said.

“You know that can change very quickly Sab,” the Doctor said, as she followed him out of the TARDIS.

‘Sab’ felt a flush of embarrassment; despite the length of time he had already travelled with the Doctor, he still wasn't used to her calling him by that diminutive. (But there were other diminutives he wouldn't have minded so much.) “It is not that likely that aliens would start invading the Earth here or that there would be any experiments that could go wrong.”

“But, these things are unexpected,” the Doctor said, knowing that Sab would continue to argue the point…

Daniel exited the ‘timeship’, as he called it, to see Sabir and the Doctor arguing, again!
They were arguing about whether they would find events/actions that the Doctor would have to be involved in, to right the wrongs. “Why do you always have to argue with each other?” he asked.

“We are not arguing,” Sabir said, with a blush.

“Maybe we were, Dan, but things can change very quickly, as you know,” the Doctor explained, her voice showing little strain.

Daniel agreed with that. At most of the places he had been since he had joined the Doctor in his travels a few years ago (relatively speaking), things had changed very quickly. It was all peaceful, and then something happened, whether an invasion occurred, an experiment went wrong, or an old enemy of the Doctor's showed up. “I agree with that,” he said.

Having changed into clothes appropriate for the era, Sigrun emerged from the TARDIS after Daniel. As it was prior to her own era it wasn't difficult to find those clothes. She could see that the Doctor, Sabir and Felicia were wearing clothing as anachronistic as the TARDIS' exterior.

Sabir was dressed in clothes from his native period approximately a decade prior to the current time, including a t-shirt with a catchphrase from one of his favourite science fiction television shows. Daniel’s mode of dress being somewhere between the two.

“Ah, Sigrid, there you are. We were just discussing the possibility of something happening,” the Doctor said.

Sigrun flinched. She was still getting used to the Doctor calling her by that diminutive. However, she did know that she did it out of affection, as she did with the other companions. “Certainly, it is likely that something will happen,” she added.

“I told you,” Sabir said cheerfully. “She usually agrees with me.”

“For certain,” Daniel said as an afterthought. Sigrun walked over to them, and waited with them for the others.

Agitated, Jiahale re-entered the console room. )
Early 1925
North America
Cascadia pushes the Canadian forces further north. They also capture more Japanese territory.

In Ottawa, there are contentious discussions about further Conscription. There are fears that the Quebecois may rebel as the Irish had.

The Americans and Mexicans also capture more Japanese territory (and defeat some redoubts in the Rockies).
More Virginian positions are captured.

South America
In the Spanish Dominions more discontent stirs as more news filters back of the carnage on the Western Front.

There is less discontent in Patagonia, but Virginian refugees are overwhelming facilities. (With many in the government wondering why they didn't go to Canada or South Africa, which have larger populations.

Africa
The Allies continue to push League forces back. Both sides are using native footsoldiers are cannon fodder...

Europe
United Kingdom
More of Iceland is captured by the Danes.

The Irish Rebellion receives more support on the ground...

It was becoming more obvious that the League was loosing the war. In a tumultous meeting of the Imperial Council in early February, Prime Minister Mosley has that driven home further.
The Virginian Representative was admitting defeat and lamenting the lack of support from the rest of the Empire. He's joined by the Northern Tasmanian and New Englander Representatives, who demand more troops to be sent to help their Dominions.
It is noted that Queensland had already absorbed the New Englander forces into theirs after the fall of Armidale to the Danish Australian forces in mid January. The session goes nowhere, and Mosley reaches out to the Spanish Ambassador to see if Spain could help the UK as they were helping France...

France
The Western Front continues to be a bloodbath. It is early in June when Spain announces that they are withdrawing support. There are no more troops to send...

Spain
The Spanish are running out of manpower... As such, they have to knock back the British request.

Eastern Europe
The rebellions continue to gain support, and territory.

The Intermarium pushes the Russians further back.

Asia
Various League forces are pushed back.

In China, the warlord era continues.

Oceania
After a long seige, Armidale falls to the Danish Australian forces in mid January. (As mentioned above.) This causes a loss of morale for the New Englanders. The lines collapse, various towns (such as Guyra and Inverell) are captured without a fight. By the end of March, Queensland had taken responsibility for the remaining New Englander forces.

Similarly for Northern Tasmania, except they are on their own. New Zealand had sent troops to help, but it was still not enough.

1926
North America
Here as elsewhere, the end of World War II is greeted with a sense of relief. The most destructive war so far in history is over.

Canada
A separate peace is reached with Denmark, Great Lakes and Cascadia. Large tracts of territory are signed over in the treaty. Nordamerika is expanded north-eastwards. The province of Minnesota-Wisconsin is annexed to Great Lakes as East Minnesota. The province of South Columbia is annexed to Cascadia as Columbia.

Cascadia
The victory over the United Kingdom and Japan emboldens those in the Elite who are of a militaristic bent...

Dakota
Despite having only engaged in skirmishes along the border, the end of the war is welcomed.

Great Lakes
The success of the Great Lakes armies only emboldens the Council (and a certain Charles Coughlin) in the perceived superiority... The annexation of East Minnesota will prove to be problem in the next several years.

United States
The peace treaty is signed with Japan and the United Kingdom by early March. (See below.)

The Midterms are particularly tumultous, as the economic repercussions of the end of the war play out.

Virginia, Chihuahua, Jefferson and California gain statehood by the end of the year.

Despite British responsibility for the peace treaty (see below), it is the Virginian Government that votes to join the United States.

Florida
The Venetians annex the former Spanish, Portuguese and British colonies into Florida.

Mexico
Sinaloa and West Durango become states by the end of the year.

South America
The repercussions of Spain's defeat begin to be felt immediately...

Africa
War has hit the various colonial territories hard. It would take decades for recovery to take place. Despite the fact that the peace treaty allows Germany to annex Katanga, the United Kingdom maintains a claim on it.
Spain looses most of Somalia.
The Netherlands loose Kenya.

Europe
United Kingdom
With it obvious that the Imperial League is losing, Parliament instigates a motion of no confidence in Prime Minister Oswald Mosley. Even the backbenchers in the Imperial Party vote against him. The main reason is the Irish Rebellion. The Rebellion had come as a great shock. Ireland was one of the oldest parts of the United Kingdom, as much a part of Greater Britannia as Pictland, Scotland, Wales, or any part of England.
The next reason is the terms of the peace treaty with Denmark. Referenda in Norway, Norrland, Greenland, Iceland, The Faroes and Shetland, to remain as part of the United Kingdom, or to be annexed to Denmark.
The results were unexpected. Especially in Greenland, Iceland, the Faroes and Norrland, where the electorates voted to join Denmark.
70% DEN – Greenland.
53% DEN – Iceland.
55% DEN – Faroes.
75% GRB – Norway.
72% DEN – Norrland.
80% GRB – Shetland.
There Motion of No Confidence passes. Mosley tries to remain as Prime Minister, but the Imperial Party backbenchers vote overwhelmingly to remove him as Party Leader, and therefore as Prime Minister. However, they vote in the hapless Samuel Beckett IV as Prime Minister. He mishandles the recovery from the war, including the peace treaty with the United States and Venice. Both Virginia and British Florida are ceded as a result.
An election is called later in the year, and the Liberal Democrats trounce the Imperial Party, leading to David Lloyd George becoming the next Prime Minister. It is the Lloyd George Government that maintains the claim upon Iceland and the Faroes (and Katanga see above) given the near parity of the referenda.

Denmark
The Danes had grown war weary over the years of war. They may have been winning, but their victory would be pyrrhic. With the other Allies ready for peace, the government agrees to stop the fighting.
In pursuing the peace treaty with the United Kingdom, the government decides upon the plebiscites, figuring that just taking the Nordic countries would be a recipe for disaster, given that they would then be governing resentful populations.
With the UK Government maintaining claims upon Iceland and the Faroes, they retaliate by claiming a portion of Norway (which had voted more than 50% DEM), Bermuda and Queensland.

Ireland
Independence from the United Kingdom is achieved, but without Northern Ireland, where there was a large Loyalist Protestant propulation (as opposed to the primarily Catholic population elsewhere).

Netherlands
Forced to cede some border regions and some colonies to Germany.

France
Forced to cede the Saarland and Alsace-Lorraine to Germany.

Spain
Forced to pay reparations to Italy, Mexico and the United States.

Germany
The European power that comes out the best of the war.

Italy
Hasn't been hit that hard by the war. There have been only skirmishes over the border with France.

Russia
Allows the Sami and the Finnish to have independence. Also cedes from territories to the Intermarium.

Asia
Iran annexes the Indus Valley from the Raj.

The Taungoo retake some of the concessions from the defeated French, and annex some territories from the Raj.

China
The warlord era continues. The PRC gains more territory.

Japan
The government surrender comes as a shock. The American victory had come as a massive surprise. There are massive protests in Tokyo from the moment the surrender occurs. The Prime Minister resigns, but that isn't enough. Reforms are demanded. An election is called, followed by a constitutional convention...

Oceania
Australia hadn't escaped the war. The remnants of New England are absorbed into Queensland. Denmark annexes the conquered territories, including the British Northern Tasmania, into their colonial confederation.

The Indo Kingdom annexes West Papua.

5. Beginning?
“Commander's log. Stardate 67835.3. The Baffin is approaching the Tanarexa system, where we shall follow up on earlier surveys.”

The Commander looked from the viewscreen and turned the chair so he could see one of the science stations. “Full scan of the planet as we approach,” he ordered.

“Aye, Commander.”
Ten minutes later, the Baffin dropped out of warp, and entered a standard orbit around an M-Class planet.

Almost immediately, an alarm sounded.

“Some kind of subspace anomaly forming in our orbital path,” the Science Officer, Daniela Hernandez reported. “Impact in 45 seconds!”

Emerson turned to the Conn, “Evasive manoeuvres!”

“Aye, Commander. Shifting orbital path,” Lieutenant Olivia Andersen reported.

There were a few long seconds as the ship changed the path. “We'll avoid it now, sir,” Andersen reported.

“Acknowledged. Keep an eye on it.”

Tanerexa IV
Having beamed down to Tanerexa IV with an Away Team, Hernandez reflected on the situation . How didn't they detected the anomaly until the Baffin was in orbit? Was it something that was triggered by the starship's presence? She didn't like that conclusion. Then there was something on her tricorder. “That's strange,” she said.

“What's wrong?”Lieutenant Daniel Lawson asked.

“Picking up divergent quantum signatures. But...”

“What?”

“It's not any one object. It's molecules in the air and water, that have the differing quantum signatures. It seems like 5% of the matter in this area of the planet comes from other universes.”

“That doesn't sound right,” Ensign T'Sal stated.

“No it doesn't,” Hernandez said as she scanned a tree. It was the same result, 5% of atoms from universes other than theirs.

“We need to get the ship to scan the whole planet,” Lawson said.

“You think the anomaly has appeared before?” Hernandez asked. “Some weakness in the fabric of space-time?”

“Yes.”

Emmerson listened to Hernandez and Lawson explain what they discovered. “We'll scan the planet. There may be some explanation.”

“Acknowledged, Hernandez out.”

“Solario, begin the planetary scan.”

“Aye, Commander.”

“That anomaly is still there...”

Back on the planet, Hernandez scanned the forest again.”Maybe we're missing something.”

“Scanning the soil?” T'Sal asked.

“No, the bedrock,” Lawson said.

“Of course,” Hernandez said.

“That's why we had the ship scan the whole planet.”

Ten minutes later, 5% of the planet's surface had been scanned.

“Something...”

“What?” Emmerson asked.

“We have been scanning the underlying bedrock of the continent and the ocean. There are indications of divergent quantum signatures in broad geographic regions. Six have been discovered so far,” Lieutenant Kelly Lu answered.

“How large are they?” the Commander asked.

“An approximate average of 6000 square kilometers. Strange... the areas have irregular shapes,” Lu commented.

“You mean, you expected something different?”

“Yes, something natural would probably have been circular or elliptical,” Lu explained.

“So, something beyond our understanding. Terrific. Any signs of civilisation in those areas?”

“None, but there could be different species of wildlife. But those would have dispersed beyond the boundaries long ago.”

“And would be acting as invasive species, correct?” Emerson asked.

“Yes, like as occurred on Earth and many other planets during the relevant ages of exploration. I don't know why any advanced civilisation would do that.”

“It could have been Q?”

“Possibly,” Lu conceded. “But I don't think he would mess with a world that isn't inhabited in this way.”

“Noted.”

“The scans confirm it. This area is an original area of the planet. The bedrock has the non-divergent quantum signature,” Lawson said.

“Something else bothers me though,” Hernandez said.

“What?” Lawson asked.

“Why would someone do this sort of thing on an uninhabited planet?”

“No idea,” T'Sal answered.

“And also, there were previous surveys, why wasn't this picked up then?”

“Previous surveys of this system were done entirely aboard the ships in question. And the last was done just before the war with the Dominion. As you are aware, Starfleet's priorities were elsewhere.”

“Of course,” Hernandez said. She didn't really want to think about the War.

“There's another one,” Lu confirmed.

“That's seven, then,” Emmerson stated.

Then there was an alert.

“Report!” Emmerson reported.

“It's the anomaly! It's moving! Intercept with the away team's location in four minutes!” Lu reported.

“Prepare for emergency transport,” Emmerson ordered. He entered commands into the command console. “Baffin to away team!”

“Hernandez here. What's wrong?”

“The anomaly is moving to intercept your location in less than four minutes prepare for emergency transport.”

“Aye, Commander,” Hernandez said. He could tell that there was stress in her voice.

“I have a lock,” Lu said.

“Energize!”

However a failure tone emitted from Lu's console. “The anomaly is interfering with the transporter!”

“Prepare to take the ship into the atmosphere.”
“Aye, Commander,” Andersen said.

“Launch a shuttle,” Emmerson ordered.

In the shuttlebay, Leonard Albert rushed to one of the shuttles. Normally there were pre-flight checks he had to perform, but he had to forego those...

The Montreal launched less than a minute after the detection of the anomaly. Albert then turned the shuttle 180 degrees and then flew over the Baffin towards the beam down site...

“A shuttle is on it's way,” Emmerson said.

“Understood,” Hernandez responded.

“It should be in transporter range in just over a minute.”

“Good,” Hernandez said. Her tricorder was beginning to sense the anomaly approaching...

“The anomaly is still moving, and it's growing in the upper atmosphere,” Lu reported.

“The shuttle is approaching the beam down site,” Andersen said.

“As soon as the away team is aboard the shuttle, put a tractor beam on it,” Emmerson reported.

“Aye sir.”

“Less than 50 seconds until anomalous conditions...” Albert murmured as he battled strong winds as the Montreal approached the beam down site.

“This is concerning...” Lu said.

“What is?” Emmerson asked.

“The anomaly is growing, changing... We might not make it out...”

“What is it doing?”

“Expanding, we're under it now...”

Emmerson moved fast, standing up. “Prepare for emergency warp, as soon as we have the shuttle in the tractor beam!”

Andersen quickly input the commands to initiate emergency warp.

Albert saw that the away team were in range. “Computer, energize!”

“Affirmative.”

The away team materialised.

“Good!” Hernandez breathed soon as the transporter effect had faded. Almost immediately, the Baffin had the shuttle in a tractor beam.

“We have them,” Lu said, with stress showing in her voice. She wasn't sure they were going to make it. The anomaly was surrounding them, and she wasn't sure that warping from near sea level would be a good idea.

“Engage!” Emmerson ordered, nearly shouting.

Andersen hit the control, and the Baffin engaged it's warp engines. However, something else was happening at that exact moment...
