Brittany - Cafe of Contention - Part 2

“So, what’s this about fundraising?” Donna Bolton asked.

Daria explained what she had told Brittany earlier.

“So, it’s because of your parents?” Andrea asked.

“Yes,” Daria answered.

“That is definitely unfair,” Andrea complained.

‘So, I brought it up with Brittany,” Daria explained.

“And I decided to bring you two in and get Kevvie to do it with Mack,” Brittany explained.

“But wouldn’t Mack want to do it with Jodie?” Donna asked.

“Probably,” Brittany admitted.

“In any case, it would depend on what we’re selling,” Andrea said.

“I agree,” Daria said.

“But we probably won’t know until Mr. O’Neill tells us,” Brittany said.

They talked about it for a while, but all they agreed on was to talk to O’Neill in the morning.

Daria arrived at school early with Donna. She still wasn’t sure about the fundraising. “So, we’re going to the office?” Donna asked.

“Yes,” Daria answered. “We’re meeting Brittany and Andrea there before talking to O’Neill.”

“Of course,” Donna said with a smile.

Other Drahvin ships noticed this and began to move towards the newcomer ships.

Kellira took notice of this and watched another ship fall out of the sky into the ocean near the remains of the Brisbane. She opened a channel to her other ships. “Evasive manoeuvres, and launch torpedoes at all ships except the Valiant II, but especially at those two newcomers,” she ordered.

The Eton Bubble and its consequences.
In early January, following a hazing gone wrong, 13 years old Adrian Hawkins creates a bubble of frozen time in a wooded area around Eton College. Scientists are mystified as to why it still follows the Earth's surface and light can pass through it (albeit everything taking on shades of grey), yet everything inside appears to be frozen in time. Indeed, when it is eventually "popped", the 5 students (the three boys who had been involved with the hazing, and two innocents) trapped within will remember nothing. Adrian Hawkins is noticed fleeing, now completely grey and seen to occasionally flicker.

“So, you’re looking for that emerald too?” she asked.

“Sure, we have looked through most of the school,” Jenna said. “We’re about to look in the Ag plot.”

“Kind of hard in the dark, wouldn’t it?” the other person asked.

“I’m sure there are lights there,” Daria answered.

“Let’s do so,” Daria said.

“Certainly,” Andrea said.

“We can take up De Martino’s offer and find Mr. O’Neill,” Daria suggested.

“But do we know where he lives?” Andrea asked.

“Yes,” Donna answered.

The Youngest Barksdale - Part 6

“I just wanted to make sure your visit to Lawndale High has been everything you hoped it would be,” the Principal said.

“This place rocks!”

“Also, I was wondering... what's Garth Brooks really like?”

“Don't know him -- but check out Skeet's underwear spread in my next issue.” Val said. “We're talking hot. How do you want yours signed?”

“Oh, any old way. ‘To Angela Li. To my friend, Angela Li. To a good friend and a great educator, Angela Li.’”

“Cool,” Val responded. “Andrea, you’re taking notes, right?”

“Yes, Andrea, this is an educational opportunity for you.”

“Oh, I’m definitely learning!” Andrea said in a sarcastic tone.

Val’s phone then rang. “Excuse me.”

“Go ahead, you got Val. Oh, hey, Nonie, honey. What? What? He what? With Gwynnie? That slut! Are you sure? No, of course you had to tell me.”

Andrea didn’t care, although it seemed the Principal did. “Everything all right?”

“I am Val, as in Val. I am Val, as in Val. Fine... fine.”

She certainly didn’t seem it, but Andrea remained silent. She was close to her limit of tolerance. She was certainly going to write something that night. Something the Principal didn’t expect.

“Now, you'll note the school spirit evidenced by the blue and yellow outfits. Where does that school spirit come from, you say? In my years as an educator...”

The Youngest Barksdale - Part 5

First class was Language Arts

“And so, in The Sound and the Fury, Faulkner give us a veritable kaleidoscope of P.O.V.s -- points of view. Of course, the title itself is from Shakespeare. Can anyone tell me which of the Bard's tragedies?” Mr. O’Neill asked. “Jodie?”

“MacBeth.”

“That's right. The ‘Scottish play’! ‘Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then... is heard no more. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.’” He saw Val raise her hand.

Andrea sighed.

“Yes, Val?” the teacher asked.

“I'd be happy to take a few questions.”

“Oh. Okay, sure,” O’Neill said.

“Val, how'd you get started?” Brittany asked.

“Well, I was a bit like Andrea. I wrote all the time. I was smart, I was cool...”

Kevin interrupted. “But Andrea’s not cool.”

“Anyone who writes like that is cool in my book. And my book is called Val, on sale at your local newsstand. Next?”

Jodie raised her hand.

“Yes.”

“Don't you think Val could try harder to present a multicultural, multi-ethnic, less brain-dead point of view to enlighten girls instead of just marketing to them?” Jodie asked.

‘A very pertinent answer,’ Daria considered.

“Jodie, you've got great sassy energy! Now let me turn it back on you. Pea green nail polish: edgy or icky? What do you guys think?”

“You didn’t answer the question,” Jodie said after a few moments of silence.

“I’ll consider it,” Val said in a tone that implied that she wouldn’t.

Andrea looked like she wanted to disappear. “Any other questions?” she asked.

“Nobody?” Val asked. “Now, who has a dating problem they would like to discuss?”

O’Neill raised his hand and most of the class groaned.

The Youngest Barksdale - Part 4

Daria arrived at Lawndale High the second time to find Scarlett waiting for her. “Scarlett?”

“I thought I’d meet you out here,” Scarlett responded.

“Sure,” Daria said with a smile.

“Today will be good.”

“Huh?”

“Wait and see,” Scarlett responded.

‘Something’s certainly happening,’ Daria thought.

They entered the school and saw that most of the students were wearing the school colors, yellow and blue. “So, what’s happening?” Daria asked.

“Someone won a contest that they were entered into by Mr. O’Neill,” Scarlett answered.

“I see,” Daria said. “But that’s not all, is it?”

“No. They were entered into the contest without consent, and now they have to play host to a vapid magazine editor visiting the school,” Scarlett explained. She looked around. “Here they come now.”

Daria saw the magazine editor immediately. She was wearing clothing entirely inappropriate for her age and had dyed blonde hair. That was in contrast to the student she was accompanying, who was wearing dark clothing and Eye of Horus makeup and looked quite annoyed.

The student ran up to Scarlett and Daria, the magazine editor powerwalking behind. “Scarlett!” she said.

“Andrea,” Scarlett said. “This is Daria, she started here yesterday.”

“Hi, Daria, I saw you in class, but I was preparing for Val’s visit,” she said in apology as she indicated the magazine editor who had caught up with them.

“Hey, Drey, introduce me to your friends, would you,” the magazine editor, Val, requested.

“This is Scarlett, and that’s Daria.”

Val put out her hand to take Scarlett’s. “Hi! I’m Val! As in Val!”

‘Great! She named the magazine after herself,’ Daria thought. “Hi.”

“Are you Drey’s friend?” Val asked.

“No. I just started here yesterday,” Daria answered.

“I see,” Val responded. “Do you like it so far?”

“It seems rather like a cookie-cutter suburban town, typical of this region of America.”

“I see,” Val said. She turned to Scarlett. “You’re Drey’s friend, right?”

“Yes,” Scarlett answered.

“Jiggy!” Val exclaimed.

Andrea groaned at that.

“So, I think our strategy should be we basically just hang, and I'll come up with some ear candy, and you'll write about your day with me, Val, and I'll write about Val's day with you, and we'll really get at the hidden heart of high school. Are you with?”

“Certainly!” Andrea said in a sarcastic tone.

“Question, why are most people wearing blue and yellow?” Val asked.

“It’s school colors day,” Andrea said. “A random event brought up by the Principal to inspire school spirit. It definitely doesn’t have anything to do with your visit.”

“You should have told me! I want to fit in while I'm here,” Val exclaimed as she took out her phone.

“Just one difference between us!” Andrea murmured.

“George, I'm going to need a wardrobe change. Pull something yellow and blue and jiggy. I don't know -- call a courier or ask the concierge.” She then hung up. “I hope no one acts differently around me, but you'll let me know, right, Andrea?”

Andrea sighed.

Video Assignment Chaos - Part 5

Andrea's room was dark, with black walls and curtains.

“Question 1. What game console do you play the most?” Quinn asked.

“The PlayStation,” Andrea answered.

“Cool,” Cindy responded.

“Second Question: Favourite Games on that console?” Quinn asked.

“Final Fantasy VII.”

“A good choice,” Kristen commented.

“That One Winged Angel track, very impressive,” Andrea commented. “The storyline is also rather good.”

“Any other games?” Quinn asked.

“Quite a lot,” Andrea responded.

“Examples?” Cindy asked.

“Crash Bandicoot,” Andrea answered with a thoughtful expression.

“You can take your time,” Quinn said.

“Sure,” Andrea said.

Video Assignment Chaos - Part 4

Fifteen minutes later, they arrived outside Jane's house. Quinn knocked on the door. A young man came to the door. “Hello.”
“We're looking for Jane?” Quinn said.

“She's up in her room. I'll get her,” the young man, who was obviously Jane's brother, said.

A few minutes later, Jane came down. “You're here about your video assignment?” she asked.

“Yes,” Cindy answered.

“We can do it in the kitchen,” Jane said.

“Sure,” Quinn said.

“Question One: What game console do you play the most?” Cindy asked.

“The classic Atari,” Jane answered.

“The Atari 2600,” Cindy commented.

“And the Nintendo 64 sometimes when I'm visiting Darian.”

“I can attest to that,” Quinn said.

“Cool,” Cindy said. “Second question: Favorite games on that console.”

“Um, Pitfall? And Ocarina of Time,” Jane answered.

“Good choices!”

“Well, the latter has great design in the backgrounds. Very artistic.” Jane lowered her voice “Despite that annoying fairy. 'Hey Listen!' 'Hey Listen!' 'Hey Listen!' Of course I'm listening!”

“Do I know it,” Cindy grouched. “But not as annoying as Baby Mario crying in Yoshi's Island!”

“I'll take your word for it,” Jane commented. “While Darian and Quinn have a Super Nintendo, they don't have that particular game. But Super Mario World is particularly difficult.”

“It's not that difficult,” Cindy said. “But I think we can go on to the third question.”

“Sure,” Jane said.

“How often do you play those games?”

Pitfall? Probably a few times a week,” Jane answered. “Ocarina of Time, maybe once every one or two weeks.”

“That's not very often,” Cindy pointed out.

“What can I say? I spend most of my free time working on my art,” Jane responded.

“Fourth Question. Why do you like those games.”

Pitfall? It's great in a reflex improving way. Helps to remember what is coming up next.”

Cindy nodded. “Absolutely.”

Ocarina of Time?”

“I like how the two versions of Link play different, if that makes sense,” Jane answered. “They have different capabilities and gear.”

“It does make sense,” Cindy said. “That's part of what makes that game so great.”

“I agree,” Quinn said.

“Cool,” Cindy said.

They talked for a short while about that game (and Majora's Mask, a game the Morgendorffers didn't have yet but Cindy did).

Quinn's Code - The Geek's Expose - Part 5

Daria was seeing red. Kristen's mother had let everyone else in! “I will find out what is going on!” she decided. 'Maybe Andrea could be helpful.'

Andrea's house was only two blocks away. Andrea came in response to her knock.”Daria?”

“Hi,” Daria started.

“I see that you're angry at something.”

“Not at you.”

“I know that,” Andrea said.

“Can I come in first?”

“Sure.”

Andrea listened as Daria explained. “So, she threw you out?”

Daria nodded.

“Why come here?”

“You can help me.”

“Oh!” Andrea considered. “You want me to hack into the Leung-Bell household?”

Daria nodded.

“Are you sure that's wise?” Andrea asked,

“Maybe not,” Daria mused. “But I want to know what's happening anyway.”

Andrea sighed. “Come in.”

Daria followed Andrea into her room. The dark décor took her surprise, although she had been there before. Andrea woke her computer from hibernation. “This is going to take time. I don't want to be caught by them.”

“I see,” Daria said. She did see the need for caution. She hoped that she wouldn't be too impatient about it.

Andrea started the first of many tasks.

Quinn's Code - The Geek's Expose - Part 4

In between classes, Mr. O'Neill took Daria aside. 'Why me?' Daria wondered. “Yes?”

“I have noticed that Quinn and her friends have been acting weird while Ms. Lane and Ms. Burns were filming her. Is something wrong?”

“Nothing to be concerned about,” Daria answered bluntly.

“Oh dear!” O'Neill said in response to Daria's blunt response.

Daria changed tack. “Don't worry. It's more like, improvisational theatre,” she explained.

O'Neill relaxed. “That explains it then.”

And so between periods, the students of Lawndale High were treated with the entertainment of the 'Geeky Trio' acting like exaggerated versions of themselves. (Of course, only those students who shared the route they took saw the entertainment, but still more of the student body heard of it.)

Among those who heard of it was Tori Jericho. After leaving the Fashion Club she had stopped hanging around Sandi and had found other pursuits. She watched with interest as the three geeks performed for the Art Chick. “Interesting,” she murmured.

Party at 111 Howard - Part 6

Andrea entered Jane's room after some hesitation. She saw that there were many art supplies. “But is there a large tub of paint?” She started looking, being careful to put stuff back where she found it.

The area of the yard between the house and the gazebo was starting to get crowded, Daria noted as she noticed Angie lead Robert out of the house. She took a sip from the punch. 'At least it hasn't been spiked yet.' She then decided to go see if more people would come soon.

Charles knew it might be a bad idea but he approached the Fashion Club with his usual grin and a soda.

Quinn saw him coming. “Upchuck at 2 o'clock!”

“Wha-at?” Tiffany asked, oblivious, as Stacy started hyperventilating.

Sandi turned to the approaching menace.

“Hello beautious maidens.”

“Charles! You had best turn away before something happens,” Sandi said.

“Feisty!” Upchuck said, but didn't move.

Sandi glared at him as Quinn put herself in a fighting stance.

“Feisty!” he said before leaving.

“He shouldn't be bothering us!” Sandi declared.

“We can probably do something, that will humilate,” Quinn pondered.

Sandi had an idea. “Something...” she said with a smirk.

Daria opened the door. )

Party at 111 Howard - Part 5

In fact, Quinn wasn't far away. “Oh!” she said when she realised when she saw the house up the street.

“What?” Sandi asked in response.

Quinn shook her head. She would deal with it. “Nevermind.”

Sandi gave a dubious expression. Quinn knew she was thinking how to turn the situation to her advantage.

Stacy noticed the strange lawn ornament as she walked up to the front door, along with the rather long grass. 'Why haven't they mowed?' she wondered as she knocked on the door.

The door was opened by Mack. “Quinn?”

“Hi Mack!” Quinn said.

“Your sister is here.”

“Cousin.”

“I'm rather sure she's your sister.”

“Daria isn't, but like, of course she's here! It's Jane's place.”

“You've been here before?” Mack asked in a curious tone.

“Yes,” Quinn admitted.

Brittany - Cafe of Contention Part 1

Café of Contention
“Class, I thought today we'd take a break from the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet to discuss the real-life tragedy that happened last night here in Lawndale. Let's share our feelings of violation following the loss of our beloved cybercafé, alt.lawndale.com. Who would like to start?” Timothy O’Neill said. He pointed to one of his students. “Charles? Charles? Did you hear me?”

“You mean, Kevin?” Kevin said.

O’Neill checked his seating charts. “Kevin, heh. I'm sorry. You uh, look like somebody else. What do you have to say about last night's horrible event?”

“I was home all night. You can ask my parents. Besides, I already have a computer.”

“No, Kevin. I mean, how did the theft make you feel?” the teacher asked.

“Um? Sad?” Kevin answered.

“Are you asking me or telling me?”

“Angry?”

O’Neill decided to ask a different student. “Jodie, how about you?”

“I think the cybercafé served one very particular segment of the community, but it still pisses me off when people take what isn't theirs,” Jodie Landon answered.

“That’s how I feel!”

“Thank you, Kevin. Jodie, about that word, "community." Isn't that the whole idea of a cybercafé? To jack us into the global community? I think what's most disturbing about this crime is the symbolism involved. Don't you agree, Jane?”

“No,” Jane Lane said.

“Suddenly, we're cut off. We can't hail our friends across the globe and say, "It's a beautiful day in the cyberhood." They didn't just take a few computers. They took the symbol of our virtual community. To visit alt.lawndale.com was to come together with the planet!”

“O come on!” Daria Morgendorffer objected.

“Yes?” the teacher asked.

“Come together with the planet? By staring at a screen for hours? Sitting in a room full of people you never say a word to?”

“Hmm,” O’Neill said, thinking on what she had said. “Interesting point, Dorian.”

“It’s Daria.”

“Uh, Damn Spiders,” the teacher murmured. “Daria, you believe that while connecting Lawndale citizens to our global neighbors, the café was alienating from each other?”

“I’m saying that if you really miss the place, put a Mr. Coffee in the computer lab.”

“So, in your opinion, what we really need is a return to the traditional coffee house of yore, where you'd watch some performers and share a cup with your friends, face to face.”

‘That wasn’t what she was saying at all!’ Brittany Taylor thought.

“Right here and now, let's pledge to make Daria's dream a reality,” O’Niell said.

“Would that qualify as an extracurricular activity?” Daria asked.

“Of course.”

“Then I'd like to register as a conscientious objector.”

Brittany joined her family for dinner. )
