“You want to see someone?” An orderly asked.
“Yes, a professor who was in the forest,” Quinn answered.
“And you are?”
“Quinn Morgendorffer. Joey and I were there when he was attacked.”
“Oh, he is in the general ward.”
“Thanks.”
The professor was surprised when he saw Quinn and Joey approaching. “You didn’t have to come.”
“How could I not?” Quinn asked.
“I don’t know what would have happened if we didn’t happen to be there,” Joey added.
“I think I would have managed to call the authorities. SpiderGirl would also have been there.”
‘She wouldn’t have been,’ Quinn thought. ‘And none of the others either, as they wouldn’t have not intervened just because I was there.’ She wondered how to broach the question. “There’s something I would like to ask you.”
“Go ahead,” the professor responded
“What do you think Oscorp was after?” Quinn answered.
“I wish I could answer that,” the professor answered quicky.
‘He’s hiding something,’ Quinn thought. ‘He thinks that something may be there.’
“You’re trying to keep what you’re looking for secret?” Joey asked.
“Yes. I promised the First Nation group indigenous to this area that I wouldn’t share without their approval, given that it is a Pre Columbian site,” the professor answered.
“That makes sense,” Quinn said.
“But what would Oscorp be after?” Joey asked.
“I have no idea,” the professor said.
But something in his tone told Quinn he was lying. “Or it’s part of the secret?” she asked.
“You are very perceptive,” the professor responded. “What I can say is that the oral histories say that something powerful is hidden there. Osborn, or people below him, must think that it means it is something that he can use.”
Quinn thought about it as she and Joey returned to the lobby. “I think we should stay in Oakwood tonight.”
“Really?” Joey asked. “I suppose the Story Oak has apartments too?”
“I’ll ask Larissa, but first I’ll call home.”
“I guess I’ll have to call home too,” Joey said in a resigned tone.
Quinn took out her cell phone and called the landline, as she wanted to talk to both her mother and Daria.
“Hello?” her mother soon answered.
“Hi, Mom,” Quinn said as she started pacing nervously. “Something has come up, and I’ll be staying in Oakwood overnight.”
“What do you mean, staying overnight? What has come up? I thought you were just going to see the opening of the theater?”
“It’s a little difficult to explain, but it has something to do with what Daria and I have been investigating.”
Her mother sighed. “Sometimes I think you’re in over your heads. It’s bad enough when it comes to what’s happening in Lawndale, now Oakwood too?”
“So?”
“I suppose you’ll be staying at that theater?”
“That’s the plan,” Quinn answered confidently.
“Even if it’s there, you have to be back home tomorrow. School will be back on Tuesday.”
“I understand. I will be back early in the morning.”
“Good. I’ll hold you to that,” her mother responded.
“Could you put Daria on?”
“Certainly, she’s up in her room with… you know…”
‘Sandi,’ Quinn thought. It was still strange that Daria and Sandi had managed to hit it off as friends after starting to investigate the mysteries together.
“Quinn?” Daria asked when she came on.
Quinn quickly told Daria what she had told their mother.
“There’s something else isn’t there?”
“What has come up is that Oscorp attacked an archaeologist at a mound in the forest while Joey and I were there.”
“I didn’t expect that,” Daria responded.
“It was a little shocking,” Quinn admitted. She didn’t want to give anything regarding her activities as SpiderGirl away.
“I’d say more than a little. It shows that Oscorp is in this area for more reasons other than Osborn finding Lawndale interesting.”
“That’s a good point.”
“Just be careful, sis,” Daria said with concern.
“I will. Could you get in touch with the fourth vigilante? Maybe she could investigate.”
“Certainly, I’ll ask her.”
“Thanks, Daria.”
Joey waited as Quinn talked to Daria. He had called home himself, and his mother had allowed him to stay overnight.
Quinn finished. “We should head back to the Story Oak.”
“For dinner?” Joey asked.
“Not just that. Maybe Larissa knows more about what’s happening in Oakwood.”
The Story Oak was busy when they arrived back there at sunset, but it wasn’t absolutely packed. Quinn and Joey quickly found Larissa where she was waiting for her own dinner.
“Of course, I’ll let you use one of the apartments,” Larissa decided. “But I have to ask, why?”
“I think that I need to find out more about what’s happening her that I wouldn’t be able to otherwise,” Quinn answered.
“Was it something the professor said?” Larissa asked.
“Yes,” Quinn answered.
“I can help.”
“Are you sure?”
“Of course. We have the internet set up there too,” Larissa added.
“That would be helpful.”
“Fortunately, this has two rooms, like the ones at the Historia,” Larissa said after leading Quinn and Joey into the apartment.
“Thanks again, Larissa.”
Quinn looked around. It was much like her and Daria’s apartment in the Historia. She saw that Larissa had set up a laptop.
“I have put a couple of changes of clothes too,” Larissa added.
“Yours?” Quinn asked, with her eyebrows raised.
Larissa nodded. “We’re about the same size, and Joey is about the same size as my brother.”
“How coincidental,” Quinn commented. “Thanks.”
After Larissa had left and Joey had started looking in the room Larissa had pointed him to, Quinn started looking into Oakwood’s history, as well as whether Oscorp was interested in the town.
But first she sent a message to Brittany Taylor in a chat room they had set up to communicate in their roles as SpiderGirl and Ninja Talon respectively.
Spidey: Something happened on the way to Oakwood. An Oscorp team attacked a professor at the mound…
Daniela saw Quinn and Joey enter the Story Oak’s café. ‘It definitely looks like they are just friends,’ she thought. ‘But what was Quinn worried about earlier?’
“Daniela?” Her friend, Naia King, asked between bites.
“Quinn was worried about something earlier,” Daniela said.
“You’re probably seeing something where there is nothing.”
“You didn’t see her earlier.”
“Maybe, but it is her business. Or is it more about you and Larissa?”
“It’s not about Larissa,” Daniela said.
“I’m sure it is, in some way.”
“So, what did you find?” Joey asked after they had ordered and sat down.
“That Oscorp is here, but their presence is minimal compared to Lawndale,” Quinn answered.
“That’s not surprising.”
“But we’re still rather close by.”
“Anything else?” Joey asked.
“They have been here as long as they were in Lawndale. As an aside, like, the two towns were founded at nearly the same time.”
“But how is that related?”
“It isn’t, but it’s interesting,” Quinn responded. “But the situation with Oscorp can be overwhelming.”
“Alongside tutoring Angie and the others, and helping to run the Historia, and school…”
Quinn nodded.
“I have to say, that you are coping with that pressure.”
“I have had to learn to ask for help, and delegate. It’s not easy, but I have my friends, as well as Daria, to talk to.”
“Including me?” Joey asked. It seemed to him that Quinn didn’t share much with him other than school and the Historia.
“Of course.”
“Like, what were you doing at the mound?”
“As I said, calling 911,” Quinn answered.
‘Sorry, Joey. You can’t know that I’m SpiderGirl,’ Quinn thought, not for the first time. ‘I don’t want you in Osborn’s sight any more than you already are with the Historia.’ She was again thankful that she and Brittany could trust each other.
They had finished their meal when Larissa came up to them, with an urgent look on her face.
“Larissa?” Quinn asked.
“Something has happened at the hospital. It seems that some sort of team are there trying to get to the professor. They didn’t say that on the radio of course, but what you said earlier…” Larissa began.
Quinn interrupted. “Thanks for letting me know.”
Shortly afterwards, Quinn emerged onto the Story Oak’s roof and looked over Oakwood towards the Hospital.
The town was calm, but she saw the flashing lights as police responded to the situation there. ‘Better be quick,’ she thought.
But first, she checked her cell phone. There wasn’t a message from Brittany on her burner number yet, but she didn’t expect that yet. She then changed to SpiderGirl and swung away.
At the hospital, Alder was fretting after an orderly had informed him that the hospital had gone into lockdown as a result of group infiltrating it. He had thought about a situation in Lawndale two weeks earlier when the hospital there had gone into a similar lockdown because of a metahuman attacking it. ‘But this is different. Osborn may be the one behind this rather than the target.’
SpiderGirl arrived at the front desk to find it in a flurry.
“SpiderGirl?” One of the administrators asked. “How did you get from Lawndale so fast?”
“I was already in town,” SpiderGirl answered carefully. “What is the situation?”
“The team is in the main ward wing, where the professor is. The police will be here shortly.”
“I saw them. I’ll go now.”
“Wait,” the administrator said.
“Yes?”
“You should know. There have been reports of a vigilante here in Oakwood too. They may respond too.”
“Thanks for the heads up,” SpiderGirl responded before making herself scarce.
“Yes, a professor who was in the forest,” Quinn answered.
“And you are?”
“Quinn Morgendorffer. Joey and I were there when he was attacked.”
“Oh, he is in the general ward.”
