21 A View of Oakwood and Ruins
Quinn Morgendorffer was driving to Oakwood with Joey Green through the forest.
“Thanks for driving me, Quinn,” Joey said.
“You’re welcome. After all, we’re friends,” she said. “And we have been working together for a while.”
“Over two months,” Joey said.
Quinn saw something ahead in the forest. She had driven past the mound before, but something had changed. “I’m going to have a closer look,” she said.
“Quinn?”
“We have time.”
They parked near the archaeological site, as Quinn was sure it was.
“You want to know what they have found?” Joey asked.
“Yes,” Quinn answered as she got out of the car. She had a feeling it was important. ‘Not the Spider Sense, exactly,’ she thought. She looked and saw that only one other vehicle.
“I hope this won’t take too long.”
“Enough time to find out what he’s looking at,” Quinn responded.
Professor Bigham Alder saw the two teens approaching. “Can I help you?” he asked.
“We were driving from Lawndale to Oakwood,” the girl with dyed brown hair in shoulder length high pigtails said. “And I saw that something was happening at this mound.”
“I have permission to investigate this site to learn more about the Pre Columbian ruins here.”
“That’s so interesting,” the girl said.
“It definitely is…”
“Quinn, and this is Joey,” Quinn said as she indicated the boy.
“I’m Professor Bigham Alder. I had started earlier this week. Usually, I do research at Lawndale State.”
“I was wondering if you could show us around,” Quinn said.
Quinn waited as Professor Alder considered her request. The strange feeling was still there. ‘Something is definitely up,’ she thought. She was sure that the instincts that she had honed as SpiderGirl weren’t lying to her.
“I’ll show you around,” Alder said half a minute later. “But must insist that you don’t touch anything.”
“No problem,” Quinn said. “I don’t want to destroy any evidence of history.”
“Good, you know,” the professor said.
“I remember something my sister said.”
They walked around the site. Quinn could see that the professor had barely scratched the surface. “You’re working on your own?” she asked.
“At the moment I am,” he answered.
“This seems to be a lot for one person,” Joey said.
“It is, but I’m just beginning. There will be more later,” the professor said.
Suddenly, the professor’s dog started barking. At the same time, Quinn felt something through her Spider Sense. ‘Uh oh! I can’t become SpiderGirl here!’
“Oh no!” the professor said.
Joey knew something was happening. He knew a defensive bark when he heard one, and the professor was panicking.
A group of men arrived.
‘Thugs!’ he thought. “Run. Quinn!” he said.
Quinn turned quickly, trying to hold back her instincts. She wanted to protect Joey, and the professor, but she also didn’t want to out herself as SpiderGirl. She resisted the temptation to web up the intruders. She grabbed, Joey and ran to a nearby tree. She then got a closer look. ‘Oscorp agents! I’m sure of it,’ she thought.
“You’re strong,” Joey said quietly.
“I’ve been working out, since, you know…” Not entirely a lie.
Joey nodded.
‘But what would Osborn want to interfere with an archeological site?’ Quinn wondered.
“What are you after?” Professor Alder asked the men.
“Show me what you have found so far.”
“No!”
“Shut up that mutt!” the leader of the men said.
‘I have to do something!’ Quinn thought. ‘The man didn’t expect to see the dog here. He thinks the barking may draw attention.’
“Quinn, we should get away. Call the police,” Joey said.
“But how?” Quinn asked, as she looked around and fidgeted with one of her sleaves. ‘Joey will definitely notice if I do shoot some webs.’
She then heard the dog yelp as one of the men yanked it’s chain. She saw red. ‘I can’t stand by!’ She turned to Joey and took out her cell phone. “Run while I call 911.”
“I can’t leave you here!”
Quinn sighed. “Go!”
As Joey ran off, Quinn dialled 911. She saw one of the men knock the professor over.
“911 emergency.”
“I’m at the mound halfway between Lawndale and Oakwood. A man has been attacked by a group of thugs.”
“An ambulance and police will be dispatched from Oakwood. Get out of there.”
Quinn then hung up. She saw that Joey had ran off to the car. ‘Be sort of SpiderGirl briefly, then get to the car by webslinging,’ she decided. She took out one of her masks out of a pocket and put it on.
He had the professor on the ground. “Where is it?”
“I haven’t found it.”
“You’re lying,” the Oscorp agent said as he twisted the professor’s arm.
He then heard a tell-tale thwip! He stood up. “SpiderGirl! She’s here!”
“That’s right. I’m here and not frightened off like Osborn expects. Now let that professor go,” SpiderGirl said from a nearby tree.
He signalled one of the other men.
“She’s too far,” he said.
“Go after her.”
SpiderGirl kept to the trees as agents attempted to get to her. ‘But how long can I keep this up before Joey gets too suspicious.’
‘Not long,’ she concluded as she started firing webs at some of the agents.
She swung close to the leader but he took out a gun. Her spider sense tingled and she webbed it out of his hands.
“I have more where that came from,” he said. “Stop moving!”
“No!”
Soon, sirens could be heard as the Oakwood Police and Ambulance arrived.
“Police!” the team leader said. “Withdraw! SpiderGirl must have called them.”
The Oscorp agents then made themselves scare.
Quinn joined Joey back at the Lexus.
“Where have you been?” Joey asked.
“Trying to keep them off my trail,” Quinn answered.
“At least the police are here now.”
“Yeah, but we’ll have to go to the hospital.”
“Why?” Joey asked.
“I think the professor expects us to check up on him.”
“But right away.”
“Maybe not right away,” Quinn admitted. They would get where they were going first, she decided.
Oakwood was much like Lawndale, with similar looking subdivisions. Quinn and Joey had been there before, although not since before Quinn was bitten by that spider. They arrived at a theater in the downtown, where students who had been inspired by the Historia, had refurbished it and also opened a café and bookshop.
Quinn parked out front and they went inside.
“You’re late,” Larissa Lawson, an Oakwood High cheerleader who first had the idea for the theater after visiting the Historia in Lawndale, said to Quinn as she and Joey entered the café.
“We were delayed,” Quinn responded. “Something at a mound in the forest.”
“You didn’t come by the Interstate?” Larissa asked.
“I prefer coming through the forest,” Quinn responded. “It’s a lot more calming.”
“That makes sense. Anyway, we’re about to start.”
A small crowd from both towns had gathered, although both Daria and Robert had not come. Daria was focused on investigating the changes in Lawndale further, whereas Robert was spending time with Angie.
“Welcome to the Story Oak, where Oakwood’s local stories will be told,” Larissa said. “Not just a theater, but a place for dramatic reading and stand-up comedy, although that will be rare. Two of the partners from Lawndale are here today. Quinn Morgendorffer and Joey Green.”
“Hi!” Quinn said as she waved.
“And with Tempest finishing there, it might be the first play to play here too,” Larissa said.
“Daria has mentioned that,” Quinn responded.
“That’s good!” another of the Oakwood students said.
“And one of our students is also writing a play,” Larissa added, “although that will take time.”
“That sounds good,” Joey said.
“It will probably be after Easter,” another student said.
“And you are?” Quinn asked.
“Daniela Wentworth,” Larissa answered, indicating the student who had just spoken, “My self declared rival.”
“We are rivals, Larissa!” Daniela said.
“Not the third grade thing again!” Larissa groaned.
‘At least it’s not something like between myself and the Enigma,’ Quinn thought, thinking about another of Lawndale’s superheroes, although the Enigma was more of an antihero. “Oh, dear!” she said.
“But, despite her rivalry, I did invite her,” Larissa responded.
“Because the Story Oak is for everyone,” Daniela said. “And I realise that Larissa sees it as more important than the issues we have.”
‘There is still an issue between them,’ Quinn thought.
“Also here, is the Mayor of Oakwood, to declare it open,” Larissa said.
The Mayor of Oakwood spoke briefly. “…On behalf of the Oakwood City Council, I declare the Story Oak open,” she concluded.
“Thank you, Mayor Franks,” Larissa said. “You may now mingle.” Then went over to where Quinn was looking out the windows. “You seem distracted.”
“It was more than something at the mound,” Quinn admitted. “An archaeology professor was there, and he was attacked by some thugs. I had to call the authorities.”
“Oh!” Larissa said. “But he’s alright, right?”
“Joey and I are going to check up on him shortly,”
“That’s not all is it?”
“No, it reminded me of what’s going on in Lawndale, since Groundhog Day,” Quinn answered.
Larissa sat next to her. “And you thought you could get away from it for a while.”
Quinn nodded.
Larissa could see determination in her eyes, but also tiredness. ‘She has been busy ensuring that that the Historia is running effectively,’ she thought. She then remembered the incident with the person who had abducted the critics as well as a young artist from a dress rehearsal of Tempest. ‘The heroes were seen around there too.’
It wasn’t long before Quinn and Joey left to go to the hospital, which wasn’t far from the Story Oak.
