28. Alpha and Aialah
Aialah finished going through the log on Arendelle. It was informative, but she was sure that it wasn’t conducive to understanding any magic on the particular Earth they were at. ‘Maybe something else?’
“Done?” Alpha asked.
“Yes.”
“You’re unsure.”
Aialah nodded.
“I couldn’t make much of Elsa’s magic either,” Alpha admitted.
“And Nina?”
“She still hasn’t made it that far.”
“Oh,” Aialah said.
“But maybe you could look at one of the other incidences.”
“Maybe.”
Alpha looked over the Arendelle data again. It still confused her. She compared it with the scans they had taken of New York. There was no match. ‘Of course not.’
She then went back to the command chair and waited for Nina to report in.
It was late in the evening when Nina reported in.
“I still haven’t found Octavius.”
“Understood,” Alpha said.
“I’m going to continue looking out for Spider-Man.”
“Keep me informed. Alpha out.” She then turned to Aialah. “You’ve been on shift for nearly fourteen hours.”
“I have been taking breaks,” Aialah said.
“That’s good, but you need rest. The maximum recommended is twelve hours.”
“Then I’ll be back after I sleep.”
“Your next shift is in twelve hours,” Alpha said. “Get some rest.”
“I shall. I’ll probably read stuff from my world,” Aialah said as she entered the turbolift.
After Aialah had left, Alpha looked over the data Nina had provided on her encounters with Spider-Man so far.
Spider-Man
Enhanced strength, acrobatics, able to generate webs and cling to surfaces, seems to have a sense for danger.
Otto Octavius
Fused to a harness with artificially intelligent arms, but is otherwise a normal human.
“Not much there,” she murmured. She wandered over to the Engineering station. She checked the status of the ship. ‘Everything’s in order.’ She went back to the command chair and restarted her Klingon opera playlist.
“Klingon opera again?” the Pilot asked.
“It’s grown on me.”
The turbolift opened on Deck 3, where Aialah’s quarters were. ‘And Nina’s quarters are on a different deck!’ she thought again. She shook her head. That wasn’t what she wanted to think about. ‘I miss home, although it was dangerous to stay.’ She was thankful that Nina had brought her to the Baffin, really. As she walked to her quarters, she realised that she was quite tired. ‘Alpha had a point!’
The door opened and she went in and grabbed a PADD on the table. “Computer, access Alae-Lakria database, load a random short story about superheroes that was published within the last 20 years.”
“Affirmative.”
The story loaded and Aialah began reading it.
Back on the Bridge, Alpha went to one of the science stations.
“Something?” Eta asked.
“There are still a lot of questions about this Earth.”
“And some of the other Earths the Baffin’s been to?”
“Yes,” Alpha said as she brought up the data from Arendelle again. ‘I know there isn’t a match with this Earth.’ She then called up the information on the Alae-Lakria of Alaiah’s time.
“Alae-Lakria?” Eta asked.
“It’s a long shot,” Alpha admitted. “But I want to cover everything.”
“Sure.”
“Computer: Analyse any similarities between Alae-Lakria and Earth.”
“Affirmative. Analysis will take approximately one hour.”
‘That’s a while,’ Alpha thought. “Use shuttle computers to aid in analysis.”
“Affirmative. Time now approximately fifty minutes.”
“A little impatient?” Eta asked.
“Maybe.”
Back in New York, Nina returned to the TARDIS after searching for Spider-Man. ‘No clues,’ she thought. ‘I’ll sleep on it and see what I can figure out in the morning.’
Alpha had gone over some of the Alae-Lakrian history when the computer completed it’s analysis.
“No indication of magic on Alae-Lakria in the records. Many civilisations on both planets have many similarities.”
That wasn’t surprising.
“Comparison of Aialah’s home nation with the United States.”
“The political organisation of the Kingdoms of Nalara is much more structured than the United States of America.”
“Show the maps of the two side by side.”
The maps were then shown. Alpha saw that the Kingdoms of Nalara was only a third of the size of the United States, although it still dominated its continent.
“Maybe that’s not helpful, bring up the information on the Librarian Guild.”
“Affirmative.”
