Church notes - September 2015
6th September
Proverbs 22:16
Joshua 24:15
1 Corinthians 12:27 - 13:3
We get our identity from being a part of the Body of Christ.
A sense of security, identity and purpose.
But it is possible to become inwardly focused.
The Great Commission goes against that. We need to allow God to move us to be outwardly focused.
We have been placed into this world to serve it for Him.
Paul is talking about people exercising the gifts they had been given. Love needs to be included in everything. (Gr. Agape.)
We need to reach out to the world and use our gifts with that love. Without love, the gifts would cause offense. (Nothing is gained without love.)
Spiritual gifts are destructive without love.
We take the challenge of love and give in love.
13th September
1 Peter 4:7 -11
We have ownership over the Church. Jesus is the Head, but we have the responsibility to use our spiritual gifts in a way that allows the Church to be successful. How we use our gifts make all the difference. If the gifts remain unused, the Kingdom of God won't benefit.
We all have gifts so that we may contribute to the whole. Everyone has this responsibility.
e.g. Jarryd Hayne using his football ability for God.
1 Cor 12
The gifts come from the Spirit
Eph 4
They come through Jesus.
The Purpose of the Gifts - to build up the Church.
Not meant to be used selfishly or to be neglected, but to serve others in Love.
vs 11
We are to use the gifts diligently. They are all about God! This is not a trivial thing, but is very important!
vs 8, 9
The love is to be kept deep and constant.
God has forgiven us via Jesus death on the Cross.
A Sacrificial love.
Proverbs 10:12
If Love isn't constant, bickering ensues.
Hospitality
Expression of kindness and love.
