With Southern English nationalism at an all time low there had been close integration between Southern England and the United Kingdom. Increasing immigration both ways across the border had lead to an increased ‘British’ identity, particularly in the border areas. Thus, a referendum on joining the United Kingdom is set for the next year.

It is similar in Ireland, where Munster is fully integrated into the Republic of Ireland.

But Northern Ireland is a different story, with the Troubles only having ended several years earlier. In a related note, a cache of IRA weaponry is discovered near Derry/Londonderry. The IRA and Sinn Fein deny knowledge of it.
