“Maybe something is going to happen?” she wondered.

The TARDIS materialised in a side street near a railway station. “20th of July, 2006,” Nina said as she emerged from the ship. She noted that the ship had changed shape to look like a van, with the license plates showing Baffin’s registry number in the Japanese system. ‘Baffin!’ she thought. Was the ship still there, waiting for her, or would she return to the past. “Timey Wimey!” she groused. She tapped her commbadge. “Crewman Nina to Baffin, come in Baffin.”

No response.

She tried again.

This time there was a response.

“Automated Baffin probe 124 responding to message from Crewman Nina. Message from Emergency Engineering Hologram Alpha is attached.”

“I see. Play message from Alpha.”

“This is Emergency Hologram Alpha of the USS Baffin, leaving a message for the Time Lady known as Crewman Nina. As of this recording it is one day after Baffin arrived at Earth. We are about to send Crewman Aialah down to the alternate region around the Mason-Dixon line. Further messages will be transmitted on a daily basis. Alpha out.”

“Connection with TARDIS established,” the probe reported. “Daily reports will be transmitted until TARDIS departure is recorded.”

Nina considered this information. She hoped Aialah would be (or would have been) able to cope with the Away Mission. She re-entered the TARDIS. She quickly noticed that something had come up on the Scanner.

Temporal energy readings detected.

Was that why the TARDIS had come forward?

“Yes,” the Doctor answered.

“There have been some strange things happening,” the person said.

“Can you describe them?” Diana asked.

“Certainly, some strangers have come into town in the past week, and they’ve been wandering around snooping,” he answered.

“Is that all?” the Doctor asked.

“That’s all I’ve heard.”

“Thanks for the tip,” the Doctor said sarcastically.

The Doctor and Diana emerged from the shop. “That was no help!” he groused.

“We can keep asking,” Diana said.

“Or maybe we’re early,” the Doctor stated.

“You’re not good at waiting, are you?”

“No. Tedium and I don’t get on at all.”

“I’ll find something to keep you occupied,” Diana offered.

“Sandi? Is something wrong?” Lindy asked.

“Nothing!” Sandi shot back.

“Something clearly is,” Lindy murmured, loud enough for Quinn to hear, but not the others.

Quinn gave her a knowing look and whispered. “Something I’ll have to deal with later.”

Lindy nodded and looked at the other two. Tiffany was staring into space as she was eating, but Stacy was intently listening. She had heard what Quinn had just said, she was sure.

The rest of the lunch was spent in silence.

“I’ll see you later,” Lindy said to Quinn as they left the café.

“See ya, Lindy,” Quinn said.

“Bye,” Stacy said.

“If you want to talk…” Lindy said.

“I’ll call,” Quinn promised.

They spent the afternoon at the Lawndale Mall and later at Main Street. Quinn noticed as the afternoon went on Sandi grew more agitated. That and Stacy was fretting more than usual.

However, it would reach a head when they arrived back at Quinn’s place that evening just after 6. “What are your intentions, Quinn?” Sandi asked.

She then looked at it. “We turn right here, and go the next left, then the third left, then the second right.”

“Are you sure?” Josie asked.

“Yes,” Quinn said.

“There are other ways,” Xander said, after looking at the map himself.

“But that’s the quickest,” Quinn said.

“And we can look at clothes on the way,” Jessie said.

Josie and Jamie looked at her.

“What?” Jessie said.

“We can look at clothes later,” Josie said.

“We can look at some clothes,” Quinn said.

Xander sighed.

“Let’s go then,” Sam said in a bored tone.

Daria, Jennifer and Brittany stopped. “So many stores,” Daria said. “How are people supposed to choose?”

“Maybe they plan ahead?” Brittany asked.

“Only some would,” Daria said. “A place like this is meant to draw people in for the novelty of it.”

“I suppose so,” Brittany said after a brief twirl. She took out her coupon. “I got Books by the Ton. If we find it, we could stay there for a while.”

“Probably,” Jennifer said.

“Certainly,” Daria said with a blush. ‘I don’t know what book she would want to get. It would probably be one on cheerleading.’ She shook her head. It could be about anything to do with sports.

“Is it anywhere near here?” Brittany asked.

“We’ll need to look at a directory,” Jennifer answered.

“Of course.”

“You asked me if I’d seen her.”

“She hasn't told you anything... interesting about me, has she?”

“No one's ever told me anything interesting about you,” Jane answered.

‘Really?’ Brittany asked herself. “That's a relief.”

“Anyway, she'll be back in a day or two. She's in the hospital while they check out that ra... rare condition.”

Brittany knew Jane was going to say ‘rash’. “Condition?”

“Yeah, she's come down with a slight case of, um, brain fever,” Jane answered.

“Strap yourself in,” Sara said as she and Emma entered the cockpit of the vehicle.

“Yes,” Emma said.

“We'll be at Austin in less than a minute.”

“That's quick.”

“It is a rapid response.” Sara said as she flipped switches, and some engines could be heard powering up. “The system uses electromagnets to accelerate and declerate the vehicle while they are in transit through the tubes close to the colleges.”

“You asked yourself, 'Why does it have to be Austin',” Emma pointed out.

“Yes, I did.” Sara said. She pressed a button and the vehicle launched itself from the Marie Green station into one of the tubes. G forces forced them back into their seats for a few seconds.

“And?” Emma asked.

“Marie Green doesn't get along with Austin,” Sara said with a tone of understatement.

“There's more to it than that isn't there?” Emma asked.

“Yes, there is. Agents from both colleges have clashed over jurisdictional issues as recently as last year,” Sara answered.

“We all work for the government,” Emma stated, with confusion.

“That is true, but the situation between TASIS and the university is rather complicated,” Sara explained.

“Can you explain further?” Emma asked.

“Not much time, we're almost at Austin,” Sara said. The g forces then pulled them in the opposite direction as they decelerated. They were at Austin.

The two Marie Greeners emerged from the Marie Green vehicle. The Austin station looked much like it's Marie Green counterpart, except that the vehicles had Austin decals. “Which way?” Emma asked as she followed Sara out of the vehicle.

“There is a way to get to the College proper without going through the Main Room,” Sara said.

“Cool. Lead the way,” Emma said

Sara turned to the right and Emma followed.

While this was happening, Leigh and Myra had entered the College. They could see the two they had trailed from the Bistro enter one of the Blocks. “Is it a good idea to follow them into the Block?” Leigh asked.
