Jane's Day Part 1

The knocking was what woke Jane up. ‘Who could that be?’ she wondered as she slipped out of bed.
She slipped on her dressing gown over her bedclothes and headed downstairs.
She opened the door. She saw her friend, “Daria, don’t you know what time it is?”
“Time to find an activity for the summer!” Daria said.
Jane knew what she meant. “Your mother gave you an ultimatum, didn’t she?” she asked with a smirk.
“You know me too well,” Daria said.
“Come on in, after I get a Coffee you can explain your plans.”
“Sure.”
Jane finished her coffee. “So, what are your plans for today?” she asked Daria.
“We will walk around town, looking for activities that may interest me,” Daria said, apparently remembering something.
“I hope you have better luck than the first summer here,” Jane said, recalling Daria getting the attention of some unsavory figures as a result of her research into Lawndale’s history.
““That is unlikely to happen again.”
“So you say,” Jane said.
Daria grumbled.
“Relax, it will be nothing like that summer, or the last summer,” Jane said. Her voice trailed off as she remembered the circumstances of the last summer. ‘It won’t happen again,’ she thought.
“That is all behind us,” Daria said.
‘That’s right!’ Jane thought. “Where are you planning to go first?” she asked.
“The Mall.”
“Why there?”
“To get it out of the way.”
“I suppose so,” Jane said.
“Let’s go,” Daria said.
“Let me get some breakfast first,” Jane said.
“Of course.”
After a quick breakfast, the two friends left Casa Lane and headed to the Mall.
“What are we doing here again?” Jane asked, wondering why Daria was starting at the Mall.
“To see what jobs are open for the summer,” Daria said.
“You remember the last time, right?” She didn’t want a repeat of the last time Daria got a job at the Mall.
“I will not apply to any store where Kevin is working! Or to Nutty, Nutty, Nutty World!” Daria said.
“Of course not, but there is no way of telling if a place has hired Kevin or not,” Jane said. ‘We cannot simply ask them, or snoop at their employee records,’ she thought.
“We could ask him,” Daria said.
“We could, if we run into him,” Jane said.
“We’re about to,” Daria said, pointing.
“Oh!” Jane said when she saw the former Quarterback.
Kevin walked up to them, wearing his usual goofy grin. “Hi, Daria, Jane, what are you up to here?” he asked.
“Stuff,” Daria said.
‘That leaves it to me then,’ Jane thought. “Say, Kevin, have you got a job anywhere?” Jane asked.
“A job? I have been looking, but nowhere will hire me. They all seemed to have heard about my time at that nut place a couple of years ago.”
“You will find somewhere to work, Kevin,” Daria said.
“Maybe somewhere other than the Mall, where it wouldn’t be likely that they had heard about that experience,” Jane said. ‘That would be fairer for him,’ she thought.
“Anything would have to be better than working for my father’s building company!” Kevin said.
Jane didn’t know what to say. It appeared that Daria didn’t either.
“I will see you around,” Kevin said, as he went out of the Mall.
“I hope he finds what he is looking for,” Jane said.
“Yeah,” Daria said in agreement.
“Let’s get started!”
Half an hour later, whilst Daria was in a store enquiring about application forms, Jane went to a public telephone. She dialled a number and waited. “Hi, I would like to speak to Monique Martin.”
“She’s available, may I say who’s there?”
“Jane Lane.”
“Just a moment.”
Jane tapped her foot impatiently as the Muzak played.
“Hi, Jane, Trent’s younger sister?”
“Yes, that’s me, although the reason I’m calling has nothing to do with my brother,” Jane said with a low key laugh.
“Of course not,” Monique said with a similar laugh.
“My friend, Daria, is looking for a job for the summer, and I believe that a job at your magazine may be just up her alley!”
“Cool, what time?”
“About 12:20.”
“That’s cool, Jane. I’ll see you then!”
“Bye.”
