Humble beginnings. He was annointed King, but years passed before he became King.

David asked for mercy based on God's character, asking for forgiveness using words of renewal.

Confession. He acknowledged that he had sinned. He was being honest with God. We need to be honest with God when we repent.

The sin was against God and His authority.
Sinfulness - attitudes in our hearts.

He wanted God's wisdom to guide him.
God doesn't want us to live in the pain of separation, but to be in fellowship with Him.

We need to know the Spirit's voice in our life clearly.

God is not looking for religious action. He is looking for genuine repentance. The relationship must be restored.

David wanted Israel to continue growing in God, passing the baton onto the next generation.

We need to express something that is relevant to the context of our time and culture, describing God in a way that reaches people; showing a real picture of God.
Praising God - placing Him on the throne.
God is ultimately in Control

We need to use our words in praising God, to articulate why we are praising Him.

All of David's wealth had come from God. He knew it was his responsibility to contribute towards the Temple project.
We need to recognise that our wealth comes from God.
We need to pass the Gospel on to the next generation.
The church supports, not replaces, the role of the parents in raising the next generation in Christ.

Yes!
Prayer - for the continued search for a Youth and Childrens Pastor.

Because He took time to pray, we should stop and listen!
Jesus' prayer for all believers
- All believers might be one.
- The world might know that Jesus was sent by God.
- Believers have received glory.
- Believers might be where Jesus is.
- Jesus will continue to make Himself known to believers

John wanted people to know that Jesus was the Messiah.

He is praying that the believers will experience the love of God as He Himself has.
How will Jesus' prayer shape our lives?
The majority of the people around the world don't recognise Jesus as the Messiah.

Philippi - It was in Greece, but it was a very Roman city. Host to a military base and a large population of retired soldiers.
Roman Citizenship
Right of participation.
Roman Culture
- Public honour/public shame
- Competition for approval and avoiding shame.
Paul's public profile had grown, Christianity's had grown too.
But the Emperor was Nero!

Paul wasn't condoning preaching Christ out of selfish ambition.

Citizenship in Heaven
Identity should be built around our relationship with God, as followers of Christ. We need to be active together. Declaring the Gospel. Church is to be the purpose of our lives. We're not to be an audience for an hour on Sundays. We are being changed by God.
Culture
It is different to Roman Culture.
What about Australian culture?
Both good and bad.

This is a prayer we should pray more.
