The Cartels near Cali are finally defeated.

Venezuela and Guyana
Guyana continues taking Venezuelan territory, before the war stalls late in the year.

Brazil
Attempts to crack down on illegal logging in the Amazon fail.

Southern Cone
Relations are normalised between Argentina and Paraguay after a long period of tensions.

Africa
In Sudan, the Egypt backed rebels continue to gain control of more territory.

Rebellions continue in Ivory Coast and the Congo.

In Tunisia, an insurgency by Catholics is defeated. However, the flow of refugees north into Europe continues.

Europe
The beginnings of the Belarus Kerfuffle can be seen in the events this year. The EU hierarchy insists to it's negotiators that Belarus must be an EU member in the near future. This is something that Belarus diplomats would confirm in the years after Belexit.

In Svalbard, Norway, the World Seek Bank opens.

After a referendum, Iceland gains full independence from Denmark. (Having been rather autonomous until this point.) Leaving the EU as a result (given that Spain vetos the possibility of them remaining in the EU, given Catalonian and Basque separatism, as they had previously when a part of an EU member had seceded.)

It is not known for some time that the world came close to ending. One of the generals in control of a nuclear silo in Siberia intentioned to stop Putin, who he saw was ruling Russia according to his own agenda not for what was good for the Russian people. So he intended to nuke Moscow (with the Kremlin as Ground Zero). However the FSB was onto his case, and a special forces team stormed the facility before he could launch.

Asia
The war in the east turns to Russia's favour once again, as they turn the tables on the Japanese advance on Sakhalin.

Oceania
Apple's iPod is released in New Zealand first, ahead of the rest of the world. The digital music player is released as each time zone switches over to 12.01 AM on October 23.

Space
The Russian Space Station Mir deorbits early in the year.

Later in the year, construction starts on the International Space Station.
