Little did people know that towards the end of the 20th Century that things would change. But change they would. Astronomy hadn't advanced to the point where the Cloud could be picked up ahead of time.
The cloud was just that, a cloud. But it was of various strange materials, and the path it took around the middle of the Milky Way would intersect with that of the Solar System, and eventually, Earth.
It would be a new age. An Age of Heroes. And of Villains...
Part 1: Heroes and Villains
January 1976
The meteor shower and the emergence of powers portend massive changes for the world.
January 1, 1976:
A strange glowing meteor falls on the outskirts of Winchester, Maryland.
(And all over the world...)
As the meteor shower starts, Astronomers around the world scramble to determine where they are coming from.
January 2, 1976:
Scientists in the employ of the Department of Defence arrive to study the strange meteor in Winchester, Maryland.
More meteors land in a reserve to the east of Winchester.
Astronomers determine that the meteor shower isn't over, but still aren't sure how long it would last.
January 3, 1976:
The local paper reports on the presence of the DoD scientists...
Reports come in of strange events in a remote area of West Virginia.
Astronomers report that Earth is still passing through the stream of meteoroids...
January 4, 1976
President Ford receives a briefing on the extent of the most recent meteor shower over the planet.
In Winchester, The Army arrives and secures the area around the meteor. (Incompletely, as will be seen on Feb 1st.)
In the Vatican, the Pope receives a report on unusual activity in Rome...
Reports come in of strange events in a remote area of southern Ohio.
January 5, 1976:
The Army tells the local reporters that there is nothing to see.
The Army also secure the meteors in the reserve.
President Ford asks NASA to determine when the meteor shower will end.
January 6, 1976
In Moscow, Premier Brezhnev receives information on the meteor shower. He orders that samples of the meteors be obtained for study.
Again, reporters attempt to gain access to the meteor...
Less meteor impacts are reported than the previous five days.
January 7, 1976
Prime Minister Harold Wilson receives a report on the meteor shower...
In New Zealand, Prime Minister Robert Muldoon receives a report on the Meteor Shower.
In Winchester, Mayor Robert Bannerman meets with the General in charge of the troops guarding the Meteor.
January 8, 1976
In Australia, Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser receives a report on the meteors that landed on Australian territory.
The first news reports of 'Strange powers' begin filtering in...
In Winchester, a strange glow is reported near the High School...
January 9, 1976
In New Zealand, Parliamentary speaker Sir Stanley Whitehead survives his heart attack after an anonymous person rushes him to hospital at previously impossible speed...
Meteoric material washes up on an Auckland beach...
In the Pentagon, a mid-level official begins going over the reports from Winchester (and other meteor impact sites on the Eastern Seaboard).
January 10, 1976
The military secures another meteor that landed in Yellowstone, near Old Faithful.
Wilson receives an updated report on the meteor shower.
Future historians would consider that the meteor shower had ended by this day.
January 11, 1976
The Philadelphia Flyers still defeat the Red Army, but by 4-2. (Instead of the OTL score of 4-1.)
The Archbishop of Canterbury issues a statement that the meteor shower isn't a reason for fear.
An amateur reporter tries to slip in and report on the Meteor in Winchester.

President Ford goes releases a statement that says that meteors had landed in all 50 States...
