Daria on Exchange
Story 11: Jane in Armidale Part 1
3 August 2004
Armidale, New South Wales, Australia
Jane Lane stepped off the train and looked at the railway station that looked similar to the other railway stations that the train had stopped at since it had left Sydney that morning. ‘So this is Armidale? So far it seems to be like Lawndale without the Lawn, and Australian,’ she thought.
After she had grabbed her luggage she went to a payphone and called Daria, using the number she had been using for six months, albeit without the country and area codes.
“Hi,” Daria said warily.
“Hey, Amiga, it’s me. I have just arrived in Armidale.”
“Excellent, Jane.”
“I’ll be at the college in twenty minutes.”
“I’ll be waiting,” Daria said.
After Jane paid the cab driver, she turned to the residential college that Daria had been living in. “Mary White College.” She saw that the college’s dining hall was full of resident students eating their dinner. ‘Look’s well looked after.’
When Jane entered the college, she heard Daria call, “Over here, Jane.” Jane turned and saw her best friend coming towards her from the direction of the Dining Hall. “Welcome to the University of New England,” she said.
