An earthquake occurs near the town of New Madrid, Missouri. This causes massive infrastructure damage that leads to an economic slump.
Attempts by the Little Egypt government to promote economic activity in the affected region of Missouri are to no avail.
United States
Early in the year, the agricultural trade embargo against the United Kingdom is lifted.
Francis Williamson (C-AL) narrowly wins re-election in the Electoral College (with a victory of only two electoral votes), although he only receives 45% of the popular vote. There are protests about this in Columbia (and other cities), but the Supreme Court quickly rules that the Constitution is clear on the matter.
Mexico
Unemployment rates reach 10%, despite Goverment policies to encourage more employment. Attempts to provide welfare programs just add to government debt.

The Incan rebellion continues. The Spanish forces continue to contain it.

The passenger liner Oberon sinks on it's maiden voyage from Halifax to Southampton after grazing an iceburg. Two thirds of it's 3012 compliment dies in the freezing Atlantic waters. This prompts regulations to be updated so every ship would have sufficient lifeboats for everyone aboard.
The Treaty of Stockholm is signed after years of negotiations. Denmark and Russia drop their counter claims.
Bergundy captures more French territory after their intervention in the Franco-Spanish War early the previous year. Spanish forces continue to capture more French territory.
