Rewatch. The twelth Star Trek film. The second set in the 'Kelvin Timeline'. A good continuation of the storyline introduced in the previous film. There are questionable aspects to the film, but it is enjoyable. The questionable bits (like, showing Carol in her underwear, or building the Vengeance in the Sol System), do detract from from overall quality, but not much. The introduction, aka the Niberu mission is done very well. It is quite reminicent of many missions in the Original Series. The consequences of the mission are also portrayed well.
Pike is right to chew out Kirk for his irresponsible actions. The actions at Niberu could have ended up with the Enterprise caught in the eruption, destroying the ship as well as the civilisation on the planet. But that is not what the movie is about. It is about the crisis brought about by Admiral Marcus reviving Khan (with the assistance of Section 31). Kirk is forced back into the captain's seat as a result of Pike being killed in Khan's attack. The disciplinary action at the start of the film serves as a wakeup call.
But not entirely, it is the encounter on Qo'nos and the battle with the Vengeance that are the real wakup call. The encounter on Qo'nos is done rather well, effectively re-introducing the Klingons, and expanding on Uhura's role as a translator. This sequence also effectively demonstrates how dangerous Khan can be. (Of course casting Cumberbatch as Khan might have been an error from a diversity standpoint, but not from an ability standpoint.) Then there is the battle against the Vengeance.
This is done well, with Marcus's having gone off the deep end being depicted rather well. Scotty's role in the battle is also well delivered, a believable way that the Enterprise crew could defeat Marcus. There may be issues with how the ships got close to Earth (and the efficacy of Khan's blood regarding it's ability to heal), but the ending is also well done. Well worth rewatching. 8/10.
