Trouble in the Future - Prologue
22 February 2000
Marie Green College, University of New Wessex, Dale of Arm, New Anglesly, Terra Australis

It had been a long day. After the second day of Orientation 'O' Week, Leigh Steinhardt was ready to go to sleep. However, there was a knock at the door. “Coming,” he said. A few moments he opened the door. It was the College President Sara Laws. “Sara?”

“We need to talk,” Sara said. She took out an id card.

Not just any ID card. It was her TASIS Card. 'And here I thought I had left the Service behind,' he thought. “A moment,” he said. He took his own TASIS card out of a hidden pocket in his backpack. It always paid to be prepared. He held it up for Sara to see.

“I knew you were in the Service,” Sara said. “As President, I could see your file.”

“So, I'm the only Fresher who was in the Service in Year 12?” Leigh asked.

“I'm not saying that,” Sara said. “All I'm saying that Annalise wasn't,” she added referring to Leigh's neighbor.

Leigh nodded. “So, you're going to show me some of the Service's facilities within Marie Green?”

“Yes,” Sara answered.

Leaving Leigh's room, they went to the right, past Annalise's room to the Block A foyer. “Which way?” Leigh asked.

“Block F first,” Sara answered.

“Sure,” Leigh said, as he followed her into the other downstairs corridor of Block A, that lead to Block F.

They entered Block F, and went along the downstairs corridor. Near the end Sara opened a door leading down to a lower level. “That's the tutorial room,” she said, pointing at the end of the corridor. “Down here are the laundry and common rooms.”

Leigh nodded. He had already examined the Block A laundry room, in preparation for when he would use it that weekend.

Leigh and Sara entered the lowest level of Block F (and of the College in general, given that the College was built into the side of a hill.). At least, it was the lowest official level. There was no one in the laundry room or the common room. They entered the common room. Sara swiped the TASIS card on a swipe port to the left of the door.

Welcome Sara!

There was a rumbling sound. A portion of the floor, in front of the window looking on the stairs outside that lead up to the courtyard between Block D and the Deer Park, retracted beneath the rest of the floor. A flight of stairs could be seen going downwards.
“Pretty standard,” Leigh said.

“But then, your school was a modern one,” Sara said.

“What's that got to do with it?” Leigh asked, confused.

“In older schools, the entrance is manual,” Sara said.

“In the oldest school at home it was, but it was built during the First World War,” Leigh said.

“Dale of Arm High School is of similar vintage,” Sara said, as she started going down the stairs.

“Right,” Leigh said.

Below the Block F common room was a storage room for various TASIS devices that the agents in the College might use. As soon as Leigh had come down, Sara pressed a switch and the floor above moved back to it's right place.

Opposite the stairs was a corridor. Sara entered it, and beckoned to Leigh to follow her.

They emerged into a large room mostly filled with computer equipment. “Here, TASIS monitors much of the university,” Sara explained.

“There's a smaller room like this beneath Oxley High,” Leigh explained.

Sara nodded. She went to one of the computers and swiped her card. The main OS screen came up on the monitor.

“Now, this is where we can check if something is happening in or near Marie Green that shouldn't be,” Sara said.

Suddenly an alarm sounded. “Like now?” Leigh asked.

“Odd...” Sara commented, with a look of concern on her face.

“What's wrong?” Leigh asked.

“Something is...” Sara began.

Warning! Temporal Incursion imminent!” A computer voice said.

“Oh great!” Leigh moaned.

“Time Travel!” Sara said in surprise.

“I guess you haven't experienced it?” Leigh asked.

“Not since year 10. And that was the once,” Sara said.

“Happened quite a lot at home,” Leigh said.
The air began to stirr around the chamber and a bright light emanated from what looked like a tear...

“This isn't like any time effect I've seen!” Leigh said.

“Not like the other incident either,” Sara said as she entered instructions on the computer.

Then with a vvarawp! a large vehicular shape appeared. Then the effects vanished.

A young lady, of a similar age to Leigh and Sara, leapt out of the vehicle. “Who are you?” Sara asked.

The girl took out a card, a TASIS card, albiet futuristic. “Amanda Howell, TASIS agent, University of the Hunter,” she said.

Leigh looked closer. Both Sara and the newcomer, Amanda, had midlength strawberry blonde hair, although Sara's was thicker.

“Show me the card,” Sara said.

Amanda handed over the card. “Be quick,” she said.

“Amanda Howell, Dulhunty Christian School,” Sara said.

“The school exists,” Leigh said.

“You're a fresher?” Sara asked.

“Yes, in the year 2016,” Amanda answered.

“Sure,” Sara said with a glance at Leigh. She handed the card back to Amanda. “Why are you here?” she asked.

Amanda looked at Leigh. “A mutual close friend has an eating disorder!”

“What?” Leigh asked. As serious as something like that was, it wasn't worth traveling back in time for!

“While that is serious, it's not something that can be prevented by time travel. Is there any other reason for your time travel?” Sara asked.

“Of course there are other reasons, but that's what I'm most worried about,” Amanda answered.

“Wait. Is it our friend, or your and Sara's friend?” Leigh asked carefully. He didn't want to know too much about the future. From his experience with time travel, he knew that it was difficult to change the timeline.

“Our friend,” Amanda answered, looking at Leigh.

“Oh,” Leigh said. 'Now I'm going to be worrying,' he thought. Even so he considered that could be possible that even with the forewarning that he wouldn't notice. 'It could depend on how often we hang around.'

“Right...” Sara said.

“There are other reasons I'm here,” Amanda said.

“Let's get to it then,” Sara said.

“I had been looking at the records at the University of the Hunter. There are indications of strange events occurring here at the University of New Wessex this year,” Amanda explained.

“Weird events...” Leigh pondered.

“Yes?” Sara asked.

“This would certainly count,” Leigh added.

“I don't think this is a loop!” Amanda said.

“Clearly not. Otherwise your initial warning would be in vain,” Leigh said. He still wanted to help that friend. 'Do I know him or her yet?' he pondered. Clearly Amanda would still be a toddler in the present, but the mutual friend could be older.

Amanda nodded then said. “I have it on a disk. It should be compatible with these old computers.”

“The OS's are up to date.”

“Cool,” Amanda said. She handed a CD-R to Sara.

“Right. I have the file list,” Sara said shortly afterwards.

“Good. Open the first one,” Amanda directed.

“Yes,” Sara said.

01 – Baldinator.doc

“Baldinator?” Leigh asked.

“An early weird and distressing event, starting in early March,” Amanda answered.

“Right,” Sara said.
