The Geek’s Expose – Part 3
Jennifer rang the doorbell. As expected, Helen opened the door. “Both Daria and Quinn are still asleep,” she said.
“That's fine, Mrs. Morgendorffer. I just wanted to be early,” Jennifer said.
Jane yawned. “Can I have some coffee?”
“Of course,” Helen said.
It wasn't long before Daria came down. “I am sure that Quinn is still asleep,” she said.
“Right, I'll get the camera ready,” Jane said.
Quinn awoke at 6:45. She was surprised to see her door open, and Jennifer just inside it. “Jen?” she asked tiredly.
“You need to get ready, quickly,” Jennifer said.
“Sure,” Quinn said with a smile on her face. Jennifer disappeared back into the hallway and closed the door. Quinn then went to the smaller window, and looked out. She could see Cindy in the distance.
As Quinn came down, the stairs, she could see Jane with the camera. “Welcome, viewers to a day in the life of a geek!” she said.
“Oh, that is good!” Jane said a moment later.
“I have dressed, in my usual Matrix fan-shirt,” Quinn said. “And brushed my hair, which takes a lot shorter time than with others,” she added with a glance at Daria.
Daria grumbled. “It doesn't take as much time maintaining it as you think!” She also knew that her sister spent ages combing her hair getting it 'just right'.
When Quinn entered the living room, there was a knock at the door. “I'll get it!” she said.
It was Cindy. “Hi, Quinn,” she said. Then she went to the agreed upon script. “Last night was great!”
“It was?” Quinn asked, with a theatrical flair.
“Absolutely,” Cindy said. “When I got home I started up Baldur's Gate...”
“...And so we entered the dungeon,” Cindy continued.
“This is boring!” Daria complained.
“I agree,” Jane said with a yawn.
“I can take over,” Jennifer suggested.
“Sure,” Daria said.
Jane gave the camera to Jennifer. “You can keep filming,” Jane said.
“I'll get you when she's finished,” Jennifer whispered.
Cindy continued talking about her playthrough.
After ten minutes, Cindy finished describing her gaming session. Jennifer went to the kitchen and got Daria and Jane to come back to the door. Just in time too...
The doorbell rang again and Cindy opened the door. It was Kristen. They broke into an elaborate dance routine.
“They had this planned,” Daria murmured.
“So?” Jane asked, as she filmed the routine. As an artist she appreciated their style.
“What's going on?” Helen asked, concern in her voice.
Quinn came up to her mother. “We're going to do weird stuff all day. That way, Daria will grow tired of taping us,” she said quietly.
“Oh...” Helen began, but she was interrupted by the doorbell ringing again. Kristen twirled around and opened the door. It was Stacy.
“Oh, my, Quinn. It's going to a lovely day,” she said in a southern accent.
Helen knew that something was planned. “You watched Gone with the Wind last night didn't you?” she asked Stacy.
“Why? How did you get that impression?” Stacy asked, still in character. It was just as well that they had planned for many eventualities. (Of course it also meant that she had to fast forward a lot of the movie...)
“I can tell,” Helen said. She looked towards Cindy and Kristen. Cindy was choreographing a battle in which she had played through in Baldur's Gate. “Oh, my!”
“This is great footage,” Jane whispered as she filmed the display.
Daria rolled her eyes.
The antics continued for a short while longer.
Soon, after breakfast, they were all ready to go to school. Helen took the four friends aside in the kitchen. “Are you going to continue your antics at school?”
“Of course!” Quinn said.
“Absolutely!” Stacy said.
Helen looked at the other two. “I see you are adamant on causing trouble?”
“Trouble, Mrs. Morgendorffer? I don't think so,” Cindy said.
“I promise, there won't be a call from Ms. Li about it,” Quinn added.
Helen wasn't really convinced. “I'm certain that I'll hear something about it,” she said. She then murmured. “Just not from Ms. Li.”
She then took the other three aside. “Just to be sure, that you aren't going to stirr up Quinn?”
“Mom, Quinn seems rather stirred up to me,” Daria pointed out.
“I give you that, but you know she has planned this. Something may happen.”
“Worry not,” Daria said in a monotone. “I have a plan too.”
“A plan to humiliate?” Helen asked.
Helen sighed.
Soon the seven left the house. “How are we getting to school?” Daria asked.
“We're walking,” Quinn said.
“We all can't fit in Jen's Beetle,” Kristen added.
“Well, we could, but it would be tight squeeze!” Stacy said.
“Relax, Stacy,” Quinn said. “As I said, we're walking.”
Stacy breathed a sigh of relief. That was one aspect of the day that hadn't been planned. Or rather, they hadn't planned for the fact that Jennifer would drive Jane to the Morgendorffers, and thus have her car there.
“We're walking too,” Daria said.
“Really?” Jane asked, still tired.
“Yes!” Daria projected.
“I'm driving home, then I'll join you on the way to school,” Jennifer put in.
“Sure,” Jane said. She could deal with it, but she wouldn't be enjoying it too much.
Soon they left, Jennifer driving off first, and the four gamer girls taking on the attitude of a Dungeons and Dragons quest party. “This is the town of Lawndale. A boring little place,” Quinn began. “But it's infinitely better than Highland back in Texas. That was a more interesting place, but I wanted to get out of there!” she added theatrically.
Daria sighed. “You recording?” she asked Jane.
“You bet, ya!” Jane said. “Although it is hard to walk along and film at the same time. We need one of those new fangled digital camcorders. We're also be using a lot of tape.”
“Don't worry. I have all the tapes. That should be enough for the whole day,” Daria said.
“Glen Oaks Lane, a rather normal street,” Kristen said.
“Of course it is,” Daria snarked.
“But is it hiding anything?” Stacy asked.
“Everyone has their secrets,” Cindy added.
“Relax, Daria. They're goading,” Jane said.
“I know,” Daria said quietly.
Fifteen minutes later, halfway to the school, Jennifer met them at a corner. She looked at Daria. “I see that they are succeeding at annoying you,” she said.
“Yes!” Daria said. “They are going on about inane stuff.”
“I see that you're not into the games that they're into,” Jennifer said.
“When it's not games, it's anime,” Jane said.
Jennifer laughed. “I see.”
Daria grumbled.
“What do you see Cindy?” Quinn asked.
Cindy held a small pair of binoculars to her eyes. “I see the Big Strawberry,” she said.
“Ah yes... That was a good weekend,” Quinn said.
“Now she’s going to go on about Ethan!” Daria complained.
Quinn heard her. “Right on schedule,” she said to Cindy.
“I know you liked Ethan,” Cindy said quietly.
“We have agreed to be friends,” Quinn said, equally quietly.
Cindy nodded before saying as agreed. “So, Ethan,” she said in a mock playful voice.
“No, it's not Quinn going on about Ethan,” Jane said. “It's Cindy.”
“Hmmm...” Daria grumbled.
“Ethan is cool, but his parents are hippies,” Quinn said loudly, continuing the previous line.
“And she's disparaging Willow and Coyote...”
“Didn't you dislike their lifestyle?” Jane asked.
“Just the fact that they were stuck in the past,” Daria said.
“Of course, the Big Strawberry wasn't the only place we went with Ethan,” Quinn said.
“Just not to any malls,” Cindy said with an exaggerated roll of her eyes. She picked up the binoculars again.
“So, what else do you see?” Quinn asked.
“The Courthouse clock tower.”
“Cool,”
“Apparently it survived a lighting strike in the 50's.”
“And a reference to Back to the Future,” Daria said with a groan.
“Hey, that's a cool movie,” Jane said.
“I know it's cool,” Daria said.
“Really?” Quinn asked.
“Yes,” Cindy said.
“That's true. The clocktower did survive a strike in the late 50's,” Jennifer said.
“Interesting,” Daria said.
“Maybe Zemeckis heard of it,” Jane said with a shrug. Inspiration hit her. She took out a sketchbook.
“What?” Jennifer asked.
“The De Lorean and the Big Strawberry...” Jane mused.
“Draw away,” Jennifer murmured.
“Go for it.”
They continued thus, on the way to school, arriving there without incident.
“And here we are, Lawndale High School, the domain of Principal Angela Li,” Quinn said.
“It is said that Ms. Li knows everything that goes on in the school,” Kristen said.
“You don't say!” Cindy said.
“Laying it on thick!” Daria murmured.
“Relax, Daria,” Jane said.
“And she'll want these recordings after Mr. O'Neill is done with them,” Kristen added.
“Absolutely,” Cindy said.
Then the bell for homeroom rang.
Jennifer rang the doorbell. As expected, Helen opened the door. “Both Daria and Quinn are still asleep,” she said.
“That's fine, Mrs. Morgendorffer. I just wanted to be early,” Jennifer said.
