Part 2
The Doctor thought about what Quinn had asked. He ran the sonic over the Zero Point Energy device and the table device it was powering. “Hmm.”
“Hmmm?” Daria asked.
“Exotic material, capable of bending space-time. It could be a portal device.”
“I don’t suppose there are other explanations?” Daria asked.
There was something strange about the way Daria asked her question, but the Doctor couldn’t put his finger on it. “What other reasons would there be to bend space-time? Any attempt to use gravitational waves as a weapon would be very uncomfortable in close proximity.”
“I suppose,” Quinn said.
“Can you turn it off?” Daria asked.
“I could try, but I have no idea what effect that would have,” the Doctor said. “If I mess around with it, who knows what would happen.”
“I think you should try,” Quinn said.
“Or maybe take it out of town first?” Daria wondered.
“There shouldn’t be other people around here at this time of night!” the Doctor mused. He doubted anyone knew that he and the Morgendorffer sisters were there.
“Oh, you’re going to try anyway,” Daria stated in her usual snarky tone.
“Oh, don’t worry, Daria. I have a plan,” the Doctor said.
Quinn knew by now that when the Doctor said he had a plan, that he really didn’t have much of one. “You don’t do you?”
“There are several ways to do this. First, I could just take the energy device out of the machine. Or second I could try to find the off switch.”
“That’s only two,” Daria pointed out. “You said several.”
“The other options involve playing around with the switches before grabbing the energy device, in various combinations, as well as using the sonic on it.”
“I would think that just finding the off switch would be best option,” Daria said.
“I agree,” Quinn said. “The other options sound very risky.”
“Thing is, I have no idea which is the off switch.”
Daria knew something was going to happen. “Be ready to run,” she said to Quinn.
“Don’t worry, Daria. I’m ready,” Quinn said as the Doctor flipped a switch close to the energy device.
“No, that’s not it!” the Doctor murmured. He flipped another switch and a holographic projection showing Lawndale from orbit appeared. “They also have satellites somewhere.” He used the sonic to scan the projection. “No help there.” He flipped another switch.
Daria saw something change. “Doctor…”
“I see it,” the Doctor said, as he looked at the projection again. “Something has popped up somewhere.”
“It looks like High Hills Park,” Quinn said.
“Not for long,” the Doctor said. He flipped the switch back. “Oops!”
The projection was still showing that there was a portal in Hill Hills Park.
“I guess we need to go to High Hills Park,” the Doctor said.
“We can lock the door again,” Quinn pointed out.
“We could take it with us,” the Doctor suggested.
“Probably not a good idea, but I don’t have any better,” Daria said.
“It’s probably going to be heavy,” the Doctor mused. He tried to pick it up. “No go. It has to stay here.”
Daria shrugged her shoulders. ‘Oh well.’
Two minutes later, they ran from the building after making sure that they weren’t spotted. “High Hills Park is to the north, right?” the Doctor asked.
“Yes,” Quinn answered.
“Lead the way then.”
‘It’s quiet, too quiet,’ the Doctor thought as they approached High Hills Park. Quinn had told him that the place had been used either as a hang out spot, or for Wiccans to carry out their rituals (or both at the same time).
He checked the sonic, there were human life signs in the area. He told the Morgendorffers so.
Quinn took out a pair of binoculars she had been using in their adventures. “I can see a few of them. It’s just as well the Moon is near full.”
“What about the portal?” Daria asked.
“I can’t see it from here,” Quinn answered, “but I don’t think the people have come through it.”
“Let’s try to find it then,” the Doctor decided.
They walked through the park quietly. Not an easy task given that Daria’s Doc Martins weren’t exactly stealthy. They soon found the portal, which gave out light equivalent to that of a well-lit house.
“Any idea of where it leads, Doctor?” Quinn asked.
“No idea at present, but wherever it is, it is almost certainly day time.”
“Or it could be indoors,” Daria added.
“That is a possibility,” the Doctor conceded. “There may be another device in that other world.”
“Are you sure it is another world?” Quinn asked.
“It could be another time, or elsewhere on Earth,” Daria added.
“Both valid points,” the Doctor conceded. “We need to find out.”
“We could go back to the TARDIS and scan it,” Daria suggested.
“No, it would take too long,” the Doctor objected. “We’ll have to go through it.”
Daria sighed. “I knew you would say that.”
“You can stay by the Portal and make sure no one else goes through on this side,” the Doctor said.
The trio came up to the portal. “I want you to be back by Sunrise,” Daria said to Quinn.
“Mom will be worried, I know,” Quinn said.
“Relax, Daria. Quinn won’t miss school,” the Doctor said. “Time?”
“Almost half past one. So, four hours until sunrise.”
“That should be enough time to determine the lay of the land.”
Daria watched Quinn and the Doctor walk through the portal. ‘This is going to be tedious.’ She knew she was going to be both bored and worried before long.
