Excerpt from: Daria: Lawndale and Sandi Griffin's Genie

“Bye.”

At another house, a parent answered the phone. “Hello? Bolton house,” she said.

Hel-lo. Is Donna home?” Tiffany asked.

“Who’s this?”

Tiffany Blum-Deck-lerrr.

“I’ll see if she is.”

Soon, Donna Bolton came to the phone. ‘Why would Tiffany call me?’ she wondered. She picked up the phone. “Hello, Tiffany? Donna here. Why did you call me?”

Yest-er-day. What hap-pened at School,” Tiffany said.

‘I guess he stays with Elias, Cindy and Jane afterwards,’ she thought. She decided to wait at the Temporal Portal for a while to see if others would arrive there. Although she was wasn’t sure that others would come there that night.

Brittany picked up the Emerald, but she didn’t make any wishes or rub it. Instead she put it back down. She decided to check that the house was locked. She had a feeling that something was about to happen...

Chip exited one of the portals back into the Howarth’s house. She then started looking for the Emerald there again. ‘I might be wasting my time, but I have to be sure,’ she thought.

“Right,” Jane said. She decided to go to the Ogden’s place. It was closer than the school, Kay Street being very close to the Lawndale Bridge.

“Jane Lane has it,” Jean said to Annie and Jasmine.

“Where is she going?” Jasmine asked.

“To the Ogden’s place,” Jean answered.

“I know where that is,” Annie said.

“Good, let’s go,” Jasmine said.

As Jane crossed the Lawndale Bridge, the emerald fell out of her pocket. It rolled off the bridge and fell into the water below! Jane was none the wiser...

“The Emerald has fallen into the Creek,” Jean said, straight away.

“Does Jane know?” Annie asked.

“She doesn’t,” Jean answered.

“We have to get the Emerald out of the Creek,” Jasmine decided.

“Obviously,” Annie said.

They arrived at the Creek shortly afterwards.
“How do we get the Emerald out of the Creek?” Jasmine asked.

Jean thought for a moment. “We need someone with telekinetic powers,” she said.

“Is there anyone in Lawndale with those sorts of powers?” Annie asked.

“More than you think,” Jean said.

“Then we need to find one of them,” Jasmine said.

“Linda Griffin,” Jean said.

“Who?” Annie asked.

“Sandi’s mother. I have no idea where Sandi is, but her mother should be at home,” Jean said.

“Wait. Are you saying that Sandi Griffin has telekinetic powers?” Annie asked incredulously.

“Yes,” Jean answered.

“Right...” Annie said, still not entirely convinced. She looked at her watch. It was ten to eleven.

“I will go and get her,” Jean said.

“You mean, Mrs. Griffin?”

“Yes.”

“Can we trust her?” Jasmine asked.

“We have to take the risk,” Jean said.

“Right, we’ll stay here while you get Mrs. Griffin,” Annie decided.

Sandi, Sabrina, Jennifer, Sam and Chris had searched one of the maths rooms when Nicki Dowling entered the area.
“We could use your help, Nicki,” Sandi said.

“I know, let’s search for that Emerald!”

Marlene’s group arrived back at the Collins’ house. “Where are Elias and Cindy?” Samara asked.

“They are sleeping at Chipmunk’s house,” Marlene answered.

“Right...” Samara said. “Any reason why?”

Cindy answered the door. “Is Elias Howarth here?” Jane asked.

“He is here,” she answered.

“Where is he?” Jane asked as she came inside.

“He is asleep. At least, he should be,” Cindy said. She wondering why Jane was looking for Elias.

“I have the Emerald,” Jane said.

‘I suppose that is why she was looking for Elias,’ Cindy thought. Jane looked in her pockets, but did not produce the Emerald!

“Oh no! I’ve lost it!” she exclaimed.

“You can stay here,” Cindy said.

“Thanks,” Jane said. She wondered what to do next. ‘Go back and look for it?’ she wondered.

Scarlett Hawkins-Le Faye came to Jasmine and Annie, who were still beneath the western end of the Lawndale Bridge. “The emerald is in the river?” she asked.

“Did Jean tell you?” Jasmine asked.

“No, I just know that it’s there,” she said. “We can still get it.”

Jasmine regarded her with scepticism. “How can we look in the creek? It would be more likely for an aquatic animal to make a wish.”

“I may be possible,” Scarlett said.

“If you think it’s possible, we may not be able to wait for Mrs. Griffin!” Annie said.

“Mrs. Griffin?” Scarlett asked.

“Jean has gone to find Mrs. Griffin. She says that she has telekinetic powers,” Annie explained.

“I see,” Scarlett said. “I don’t think we can wait. We have to go in there and try to find it.”

“I’ll do it!” Jasmine said.

At Lawndale High, Sandi, Chris, Sam, Sabrina, Nicki and Jennifer had finished their search of the Math area, when they saw another person enter. “Hi, can I help you search for the Emerald?”

“Sure, but you can introduce yourself first,” Sabrina said.

“I’m Elly Aitkin, I also go to this school,” the newcomer said.

“You’re welcome to help us,” Sandi said.

Jasmine was learning over the Creek. Scarlett was holding her. Annie was holding her in turn, while also holding a tree branch that hung over the creek bed. Then the branch snapped, sending all three girls into the creek!
“I thought this was stupid idea, Jasmine!” Annie said as she came up for air. “Jasmine?”

Jasmine was nowhere to be seen. Her own efforts to remain afloat were failing. “Jasmine!”

“Let me help!” Scarlett said. She grabbed Annie around the waist and helped her to a shallow spot next to a gently sloping part of the bank. Jasmine then came up for air.

“It’s gone!” Jasmine said.

“What do you mean, gone?” Annie asked.

Elias asked Samara if he could go to her house. So did Cindy and Louisa. “Certainly,” Samara said.

“You can come,” Mara said. They all got into Mara’s car. “Are you coming too, Daria?” she asked.

“I’ll head home and search from there,” Daria said.

“Same here,” Quinn said.

After Mara had driven off and the Morgendorffers had gone out of sight, Marlene turned to Jasmine. “I don’t know what to do next,” she said.

“I’ll follow Chip,” Jasmine said.

“You can do that,” Marlene said.

Marlene waited while Chip and Jasmine walked away from the school together, in a different direction than the Morgendorffers. She then turned to Ryan who had been waiting there. “I am also from the future,” she said.

“So, what do I do next?” Ryan asked.

“You look for the Emerald at Cranberry Commons and stay there until I come there,” Marlene ordered.

“Right,” Ryan said. He then left the school, following behind Chip and Jasmine.

Marlene thought. She wasn’t sure of what would occur over the next 24 hours. So she was free to do what she wanted, except find the Emerald, or go to Cranberry Commons...

“This is crazy. I didn’t expect a traffic jam,” he said.

“Maybe we should turn back,” Nickolas suggested.

“No, the jam goes both ways. We’re probably being distorted into a confined space,” Adam said. He looked around. He mostly saw houses but he also saw the Catholic Church, the Episcopalian Church and Lawndale North Primary none of which were near each other normally. He beeped the horn, being impatient with the traffic.

It was now 2:45. Chip re-entered the house. “The fuses are blown,” she said.

“There are some spares in the basement,” her mother said.
