Shortly afterwards, Quinn changed to SpiderGirl on the roof of the theatre. The themes of change resonated with her, specially with the changes she had undergone since she got bit by that spider and after her father died. ‘Daddy! I will always miss you! Thank you for saying ‘With Great Power. Comes Great Responsibility.’ It has given me something to strive for.’ She then thought about Brittany as Ariel. ‘She’s pouring herself into the role.’ Then she heard sirens to the east, across the creek in Lawndale Flats. ‘Responsibility calls,’ she thought as she swung away.

Daria and Jane left the Historia, heading towards the pizza place. “That was rather good for a first rehearsal,” Jane said.

“The actors had time to learn the script. And many were already familiar with The Tempest,” Daria said.

“Including Brittany? That was a surprise.”

“Apparently she had read Shakespeare since she was young.”

“I must have missed that,” Jane mused. “What do you think about the guy playing Prospero?”

“Tom? He’s good. It must be because Fielding covers Shakespeare better than a public school would.”

“I mean, he’s cute.”

“I don’t think so,” Daria said. “He’s like all the other boys.”

Jane shrugged. “Maybe. Still, all of them were good, including Tania.”

“She did well in her audition. Just because she was running around town accusing people of being the vigilantes over a week ago doesn’t mean I would not give her the opportunity.”

“Of course. Of course.”

1898
North America
As part of the below reform, the Dominion of Canada becomes the Kingdom of Canada, with more internal autonomy.

The Protecteurs du Sang Québécois begin attacking Mountie stations near Montreal. (Not very many in this year, compared to later years)

In the United States, Redstick belongs Baton Rouge again.

French ships attempt to approach Haiti in late December but American ships hold them off.

The Nicaraguan Government agrees to have a British-American Canal built through it’s territory.

South America
American settlement begins on the Galapagos Islands.

In Patagonia, the Mapuche people begin to find themselves displaced by the increased settlement.

Africa
African American settlement in Liberia and Senegal continues, with most of the settlers coming from the South.

In Abyssinia, more Russian investors are behind more fruit factories.

Native uprisings occur in the west of Tanganyika.

Europe
A contentious reform passes Westminster. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland remains, but is now the core of the new Empire of Greater Britannia, with Victoria as Empress (not just of India). For now, the Kingdom of Canada is the only other Substituent Kingdom. An Imperial Council is established (with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and a Canadian Representative), but Westminster still has the same power as before.
Oxford
Late November
In one of the colleges, two of the students met as the returned from classes.

“It actually passed didn’t it?” Robert Towns, a history student, asked.

“It did. The Empire is now formal, rather than informal,” Charles Robinson, a literature student, said.

“But that is not all, is it? The Queen is now an Empress. Other than Cromwell, England has always had Kings and Queens.”

“It is a break in tradition, but we need to adapt to the modern world. After all, Britannia rules the wabes.”

“You don’t understand,” Robert said.

In Belgium, riots in Wallonia continue to occur.

The Dreyfus Affair continues. Boulanger is more focused on the British and their official Empire. He considers the forces within Westminster to be his rival. He’s not surprised when the news of the attack on the Philippines (see below) come in. He increases naval patrols in the Channel, around St. Pierre and Migulon and in the Caribbean.

Asia
The Russian offensive to reconquer the rebellious Caucasus is ongoing at the end of the year.

Japanese influence in Manchuria increases.

War breaks out between Britain and Spain over the Philippines. The British had captured Mindanao and other islands and placed Manilla under siege by the end of the year. They intend to place a similar protectorate as that over Cuba.

Oceania
The Oceanian colonies continue discussing ways of pooling their resources, but they know a Federation similar to Canada or the United States is not what they want. Even so, there is momentum towards the formation of a loose confederation with (formerly Dominion) Constituent Kingdom status and Imperial Council representation. This is especially prominent amongst the colonial governments of New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, with interest increasing in Tasmania.
