The Doctor returned to the TARDIS, and found that Janelle, his latest travelling companion, was leaning against the doors lost in thought. “Janelle?”
Janelle started. “Sorry, I didn’t see you there,” she said apologetically as she moved aside, and brushed her short hair out of her eyes.
“I just got back,” the Doctor said as he handed one of the coffees to Janelle. “Cream Latte with half a sugar, just the way you like it.”
“Thanks,” Janelle said as he unlocked the door.
Janelle followed the Doctor into the console room and took a sip from the latte. She was sure she was ready for another journey with the Doctor.
“Something on your mind?” the Doctor asked.
“Oh?”
“When I walked up, you were distracted,” the Doctor said as he set the TARDIS in motion.
“I was,” Janelle said quietly. She wasn’t sure she wanted to share her ruminations with the Doctor. She decided to ask him something. “Have you found yourself repeating the same mistakes?”
“That’s a deep question,” the Doctor stated. “Of course. Everyone does. But what is important is whether something is learned each time.”
She considered that. It was true that she had learned more about herself from the experiences she had been thinking about. “No doubt, you wondered why I jumped at the chance to travel with you.”
“It happens more often than you might think,” the Doctor said.
“Really?”
“Yes.” The Doctor made some adjustments on the console as the TARDIS shook. “You’re running away from something?”
Janelle shrugged. She really didn’t want to say. Not yet. “Maybe.”
