After Omaha – The Magical Colonization of the Solar System and Beyond Collaborative Setting
There had always been magic and other weirdness, which science couldn’t explain. It was thought that it had disappeared in the early 20th Century, but it wasn't so. Little did anyone know, that an action by a bullied American teenager was going to change everything...

Omaha, Nebraska
Daniela Lawson had had a terrible day. They had been picking on her again. She arrived home, exhausted. As she showered, she thought back on the day.
Millard High School
Daniela returned to her locker after her second period. History was interesting, but she knew it didn’t cover much. Suddenly, she heard footsteps behind her. Them, or at least only some of Them. “Daniela!” It was the ringleader, Katie Anderson. Her heart beat faster. She knew what she was going to say, and indeed Kaite and her twin sycophants said those mean things. ‘Not true!’ she thought as tears threatened to stream down her face.
She longed to lash out, as her ability crackled through her fingers like electricity. But she knew that would only make things a whole lot worse. The bell rang for the next class, filling Daniela with relief. One of the trio slapped her as they left. That stung, but not as much as what they had said.
Later.
Having showered, Daniela felt a little better. She finished dressing and looked in the mirror as she re-did her hair the in same pigtails she had worn to school. She frowned, but she knew that wasn’t any of the reasons she was teased. Some of them, particularly the twins, usually wore their hair in a similar way. She shook her head, dismissing that thought. Both her parents were still out. She wanted to experiment.
Half an hour later, Daniela was still testing her powers by making the living room furniture float when she heard a scream behind her. The distraction was enough for the various furniture items to come crashing down. “Mom?”
Her mother was shocked and confused. “You were doing that?” she asked.
“Yes,” Daniela answered warily.
“I knew it! You’ve become Fluffy!” Her mother screamed.
Upon hearing that derogatory term, Daniela lashed out…
Meredith Lawson came to after Daniela had lashed out with magic. The living room was even more of a mess. She saw Daniela had knocked herself out. Even so, she wasn’t taking chances. She picked up the phone and dialled 911. Once she had reported what had happened, she ran out of the house.
Daniela came to. Why did her mother have to use the same term her bullies had used? She went to the kitchen and ate two bananas. It was then that she heard the police outside!
She panicked, surrounding the house with a forcefield…
Sargent Peter Ellison and his fellow officers approached the house warily. While the existence of Mages wasn’t acknowledged publicly, they had been briefed on what to expect if they were called out to an active mage. This was the fourth in Nebraska so far this year.
Daniella paced the living room. 'What to do?' she pondered, not for the first time. She didn’t want to face the police! She was trapped. She then did something drastic.
The forcefield pushed out sending police cars flying, damaging the neighbouring houses.
The Police weren’t prepared for that. “We may need the National Guard!” Ellison groused. But not even the National Guard would be prepared for what happened next.
Daniela focused. ‘Up!’ she thought, expanding her perception to encompass the entire house and the yards surrounding it.
The gravitational force within the magic field surrounding the house was reversed. Additional force then sent the house and the ground below it and the yards accelerating upwards at 9.8 meters per second per second.
The house climbed above the city. As it became visible on the radar at the air force base, fighters were scrambled. Daniela realised this. She continued guiding the house further upwards.
As the house rose higher in the atmosphere, she realised the magic field was weakening, as if it was the planet and the life on it that generated it. ‘If so, there must be a way to extend it!’ She focused further. ‘Life?’ It wasn’t just her in the house, but also all the bacteria on all the surfaces, and the plants, insects and other invertebrates in the gardens. And something for power. Her parents had complained about the Radon in the basement. ‘life, and Radon?’
She focused on all the organisms (that is, the plants and invertebrates), the Radon and the furnace in the basement. Soon there was an explosion as something Ignited in the furnace, and the house was generating its own field.
As the house achieved orbit, Daniela looked at the Moon. “There!” she said.
White House, Washington DC
President Nixon had been notified of the situation in Nebraska. Reports from the Omaha neighbourhood were still coming in. ‘So much for reducing NASA’s budget,’ he thought. If so called ‘Mages’ could do that, America needed a permanent presence in space.
