30 The Day The Earth Stood Still (2008)
Remake of the 1951 film based on a novel. It has a rather different theme to the original film. Where the original was warning about Cold War tensions, this one is warning about the danger to the planetary biosphere that mankind poses. When a spaceship lands in Central Park, the military gathers scientists to examine it. An alien emerges, who turns out to be part human. One of the scientists helps the alien to escape after the Secretary of Defense refuses his request to address the United Nations.
The scientist also brings along her young boy (stepson), as she accompanies the alien and begins to persuade him to save humanity, to give them a chance to save their ways. An interesting film, but not as good as the original. Not just the differing focus. Keanu Reeves may be a good actor, but he's not Michael Rennie. Nor is Jennifer Connelly Patricia Neal. But that isn't fair, and merely my perspective. However, this version of Klaatu becomes more human as time goes on, and Reeves portrays this well.
Connelly portrays the desperation of the scientist and mother who wants to save humanity from the Gort Swarm in a way that is very believable. However, despite the differences, it is almost as good as the original. 8/10.
