Time and the Titanic – Part 2
Soon, Stacy had got ready.
“I'm ready,” she said as she entered the time vehicle. She placed her supplies next to Quinn's pile of clothes and Daria's food and water. With the five girls, it was a tight squeeze.
“The Titanic?” Jodie asked.
“Of course,” Stacy said.
“Entering co-ordinates,” Jodie said.
Location: RMS Titanic Stern Section
Time: 1912, April 14th 8:50 PM local time.
“Ready to go?” she asked once the coordinates were complete.
“Yes,” Daria answered.
Jodie pressed the button.

The feeling of time travel was the same as it was between her house and Jane's and then from Jane's to Stacy's Daria noted. However, it was taking longer. 'Probably because it is a much longer period,' she thought. She looked at the display. It showed the date going backwards through October of '99 and the time vehicle heading out of Lawndale in an easterly direction. She turned to Jodie. “Must be using some sort of parallel continuum,” she said.
“What?” Jodie asked.
“A sort of side space to our universe which allows unlimited movement through space-time. Something your father must have discovered,” Daria said.
“He has said something like that,” Jodie said guardedly. “Except it was the discovery of someone working for him.”
“It is still Landon Engineering's 'baby' isn't it?” Daria asked.
“Yes,” Jodie admitted.
“So, the side-space allows time travel. But how is the vehicle tracking the Earth through its rotations and orbit?”
“He said that it was very complex. The computers take up the most space in the non-passenger portions of the vehicle.”
“I see,” Daria said. 'That answers that,' she thought.
“However, he also said something about the gravity fields in the Solar System and angular inertia...” Jodie added.
'Another wrinkle,' Daria thought. They were now going backwards through the rest of the 90's and the screen zoomed out from Carter County to Maryland as they crossed the County's eastern border. She could see that Quinn and Stacy were also listening in on the conversation. (How much they understood, she wasn't sure.)
“It took years to get this far,” Jodie added.
“I don't doubt it,” Daria said.
“So, it is a very complex thing?” Quinn asked.
“Very complex. Dad tried to explain it to me, but most of it went over my head,” Jodie admitted.
'Not surprising,' Daria thought. She looked at the screen again, they were in the 1910's and were over the Atlantic approaching the place where the Titanic went down.
“The database must be huge, right?” Stacy asked.
“Of course,” Jodie said.
“What?” Daria asked at the same time.
“To store the locations of every settlement, and the ship movements throughout history...” Stacy expounded.
“Yes, hard drives make up a sizeable minority of the computer portion of the time vehicle,” Jodie said. Stacy was smarter than Daria gave her credit for.
“Yeah...” Stacy said.
“We're almost there,” Quinn said.
Daria looked again. It was the 14th of April, 1912.
