With success comes Vulnerability

'I can do this in my own strength'
The defeat is akin to a spiritual defeat..
Joshua took his eys off God, to his self-confidence.
Turning defeat into victory.
Israel needed to repent!
- We need to repent also.
- Is there anything in our lives that hinders our devotion to God?
Your disobedience weakens the community.
We are one body.
1 Corinthians 12:12 - 31
Ephesians 5:22 - 33
The sin in one part of Israel (and the Church) affects the whole.
Joshua was open to the LORD and willing to learn from his mistake.
Achan - represents a malignancy in the heart of humanity.
A pathway that leads to personal defeat

No matter how famous a person becomes, eventually they will be forgottten. (c.f. Kanye West fans not knowing who Paul McCartney is)
Enduring Faith
Even after 45 years, Caleb's faith was as strong as ever.
Courageous Devotion
Caleb was Courageously Devoted to God.
It can be lonely
It is a difficult, dangerous faith. The World is against it.
Enduring Faith
- Complete Dependence
Caleb's faith was not based on his own strength.
Feelings should not dictate our faith. They will waver.
God's Word should dictate our faith. They will not waver.
Continuing Determination.
Most of Israel failed to drive out the Canaanites, due to not having the faith they needed.
Sin - is like head lice. It spreads. If one part remains, it spreads again.,
Caleb doesn't let age get in the way of God's promise.
He had God's favour.
We has His favour too, due to the Cross.
Do we have enduring faith? Or do we let sin entangle us?

How is God's justice satisfied?
. God valued human life.
. . Blood can only be repaid in blood.

. God judges the heart.
How is God's justice good?
. It is not impulsive revenge.
. It is full of mercy.
. It is accessible to all.

Lent - a Christian tradition of Fasting during the 40 days leading to Easter.
Fasting
- A discipline
- A Christian discipline
An excercise in spiritual discipline
Allows us to focus on Him:?
It isn't something for impressing God.
Matthew 6:6 - 18
Matthew 9: 14 - 17
A Gateway through which God can use the person?
The Pharasees' fasting - Jesus condemned them for their attitude.
Acts 10: 1 - 8
James 4: 1 - 12
We either surrender to God, or to Devil and the forces of this world.
It is a humbling process
Acts 9
God instantly gained Saul's attention
Before Ananias found him, he had fasted for three days.
Ephesians 2:10.
He wants us to connect with Him
It is not meant to be a religous routine
Isaiah 58: 4, 5
Their hearts were not in the fasting.
We need to examine ourselves.
Fasting to impress others isn't worth anything.
God sees what is inside!
A connection to humility and weakness.
Exodus 3
It is God's strength, not ours, that's important
