Sandi wasn’t sure what Quinn had been up to, but she focused on the Oakwood map. The Story Oak was in the middle of town and Oscorp had no offices nearby. “Just that place on the east side,” she murmured.

“What’s that?” Daria asked.

“Just noting where Oscorp is present,” Sandi responded.

“The only one we’re aware of,” Daria pointed out.

“I agree.”

Back at the hospital, Officer Vale finished interviewing Ninja Talon. “Thanks for letting me know,” Vale said. “Although there is stuff you held out on.”

“As I said, that’s up to Spidey.”

“And I see you are good friends.”

“We help each other with what we do,” Ninja Talon said.

“I suspect more.”

“But that’s all I’m saying,” Ninja Talon said as she left.

She headed back to the room where Professor Alder had been again placed for observation, where she found him and the silent vigilante playing a game of Go Fish.

“I’ve been thinking,” the Professor said.

“What about?” Ninja Talon said.

“There is no one at the mound right now. Oscorp could make a move and try to locate what they are looking for without regard for keeping the site intact,” the professor said.

“I could go out there and check,” Ninja Talon suggested.

“That would be a good idea,” the Professor said.

“I’ll do it,” Ninja Talon said before sending a text to SpiderGIrl and slipping out of the room.

Quinn read the message from Brittany as she sipped her latte.

“A message?” Joey asked.

“Yes,” Quinn answered. “Nothing to worry about.”

Upon using an emergency exit they found security waiting for them. Ninja Talon slammed it closed and SpiderGirl webbed it shut. “OK, up to the roof,” SpiderGirl directed.

“Are you sure?” the professor asked.

“Of course,” SpiderGirl responded. “We’ll have more options than on the ground level.”

“It’s just that, I’m afraid of heights.”

“We can work with that,” Ninja Talon responded.

They soon found a stairwell to the roof.

SpiderGirl opened the roof door to only find two guards on either side. She quickly webbed up both of them before turning back to the others. “The coast is clear to the south, but that could change quickly.”
She turned back and swung so that she landed on top of the exit.

She saw that agents were already climbing onto the roof at the northern end. “Move, move, move!” she said.

The silent vigilante brought the professor out, while Ninja Talon swung up next to SpiderGirl.

“We can hold them off more than long enough,” she said.

“Into the fray; responsibility calls,” SpiderGirl confirmed.

The two then targeted the agents and started shooting webs and throwing shuriken and smoke pellets to delay them.

The silent vigilante got to a southern fire escape with the professor and looked down. The ground at the base of the building was free of security. ‘But that could be deceiving.’ But they had to take the risk. She looked back and signalled the other two.

Soon, they were a block away. “The question now is, where to go now?” Ninja Talon asked. “It’s probably not a good idea to take him back to the hospital.”

“The Story Oak is out. Joey is suspicious enough already,” SpiderGirl added. “And probably Larissa too.”

The Hospital would seem to be the better choice, the silent vigilante said.

“The Hospital. I guess there would be more police there, even if Oscorp would expect us to take him back there,” SpiderGirl mused. She turned to the silent vigilante. “Do you know all the ways in?”

Most of them, the silent vigilante responded.

“That will have to do,” SpiderGirl said.

One of the rear entrances might be the best idea the silent vigilante decided.

Back at the Story Oak, Daria Morgendorffer and Sandi Griffin arrived. “It looks similar to the Historia,” Sandi commented.

“They are both Art Deco.”

“It’s more than that.”

“They were probably built at the same time from similar plans,” Daria said as she led the way into the café. “And Larissa was inspired by us to do the restoration.”

“I guess so,” Sandi mused.

Spider Quinn 21 A View of Oakwood and Ruins - Part 3

SpiderGirl thought about what the administrator had said as she made her way towards the wing she and Joey had been in earlier. She hadn’t heard about an Oakwood vigilante, but then she was focused on Lawndale.

She arrived at the corridor and heard one of the team interrogating the professor.

“…Osborn wants your cooperation. That is why we’re here.”

‘Is that for the PR?’ SpiderGirl wondered. She quickly checked her phone.

Talon: On my way, Spidey.

‘Sent a minute ago. I can’t wait.,’ SpiderGirl decided. She then shot a web up to the ceiling so as crawl into the room along there.

She quickly found that there were four of them there; two less than there were at the mound. ‘Probably waiting outside or on the roof,’ she thought. She then shot webs at two of them.

They quickly reacted.

“SpiderGirl! Stay out of this!”

“No! He doesn’t want you here, nor to work for Osborn!” SpiderGirl quipped as she webbed a third. However, one of the two she had already webbed managed to escape via some kind of liquid. ‘Something to dissolve the webs? What else has Osborn been working on?’ The two free agents grabbed the professor and ducked behind some equipment.

“You can’t stop us!” The first agent said, as he smashed the window.

SpiderGirl webbed the equipment out of the way, but the two were joined by the other two, and escaped with the professor. ‘They know my tactics,’ SpiderGirl realised as she went to the window.

But when she got to the window, there was a SpiderSense tingle! She jumped, and webbed herself to the ceilings. A figure in a cloak entered the room and looked around.

‘That must be the Oakwood Vigilante,’ SpiderGirl thought as she remained still. ‘But they are getting away with the professor!’

At the Story Oak, Larissa went over to where Joey was having his desert. “Where’s Quinn?” she asked.

“She went up for fresh air,” Joey answered.

“Up on the roof?”

“Yes. Often goes up to look over town from the Historia.”

“Sounds restful,” Larissa commented. “I’ll go up.”

“Go ahead.”

Captain’s Log Stardate 61992.7; the Beowulf has arrived at Circe II, a pre-warp planet similar to Earth in the late 20th Century, engaged in a Cold War and in the early stages of developing a global internet.

Captain Erica Browne looked at the planet from her ready room window. Beowulf had arrived in high orbit earlier in the day. She had gone over the previous reports on the planet. They had all stated that societies on the planet were similar to those on Earth in the late 20th Century. But one polity had stuck out. She focused on what could be seen of the polity in question.

It was a federal state that lay in the temperate zone of the southern hemisphere, sprawled across half a continent and most of the island chains in the ocean to the west. But it was it’s largest city, which lay on it’s east coast, where it’s largest river reached that ocean, that drew her attention. The previous surveys had shown the crime rate in that city progressively getting worse as time went on, with apparent reforms being ineffective. ‘The societal problems aren’t being addressed,’ she thought. She could think of many examples in Earth’s history, especially in the United States around the turn of the millennium.

The door chime sounded.

She turned towards the door. “Enter.”

Her first officer, Commander Thressa Athrea entered. “You wanted to see me, sir.”

“Yes, Commander. I wanted to know, what you think about the planet.”

“It’s typical of a planet at its stage of development, Captain.”

“Is it?” Captain Browne asked.

“What are you getting at?

Erica breathed deeply and brought up the data on the city she had been thinking about on her desk terminal. “This is one of the largest cities on the planet.”

“You want us to focus scans on it? Why?” Thressa asked.

“I want more information on its layout, and the geography of the nearby regions.”

“It shall be done, Captain. But may I ask why?”

“It has piqued my interest,” Erica answered. She didn’t want Thressa to know what she was planning yet.

Thressa raised an eyebrow and her antennae shifted in a skeptical manner. “I know you’re hiding something, Erica. You can trust me.”

‘Of course,’ Erica thought. She and Thressa had known each other since the Academy. “I’ll tell you another time.”

“Off duty you mean.”

“Yes.”

“I’ll get you the information,” Thressa said in a resigned tone, “But you are telling me off the record.”

“I will.”

“You want to see someone?” An orderly asked.

“Yes, a professor who was in the forest,” Quinn answered.

“And you are?”

“Quinn Morgendorffer. Joey and I were there when he was attacked.”

“Oh, he is in the general ward.”

“Thanks.”

The professor was surprised when he saw Quinn and Joey approaching. “You didn’t have to come.”

“How could I not?” Quinn asked.

“I don’t know what would have happened if we didn’t happen to be there,” Joey added.

“I think I would have managed to call the authorities. SpiderGirl would also have been there.”

‘She wouldn’t have been,’ Quinn thought. ‘And none of the others either, as they wouldn’t have not intervened just because I was there.’ She wondered how to broach the question. “There’s something I would like to ask you.”

“Go ahead,” the professor responded

“What do you think Oscorp was after?” Quinn answered.

“I wish I could answer that,” the professor answered quicky.

‘He’s hiding something,’ Quinn thought. ‘He thinks that something may be there.’

“You’re trying to keep what you’re looking for secret?” Joey asked.

“Yes. I promised the First Nation group indigenous to this area that I wouldn’t share without their approval, given that it is a Pre Columbian site,” the professor answered.

“That makes sense,” Quinn said.

“But what would Oscorp be after?” Joey asked.

“I have no idea,” the professor said.

But something in his tone told Quinn he was lying. “Or it’s part of the secret?” she asked.

“You are very perceptive,” the professor responded. “What I can say is that the oral histories say that something powerful is hidden there. Osborn, or people below him, must think that it means it is something that he can use.”

21 A View of Oakwood and Ruins
Quinn Morgendorffer was driving to Oakwood with Joey Green through the forest.

“Thanks for driving me, Quinn,” Joey said.

“You’re welcome. After all, we’re friends,” she said. “And we have been working together for a while.”

“Over two months,” Joey said.

Quinn saw something ahead in the forest. She had driven past the mound before, but something had changed. “I’m going to have a closer look,” she said.

“Quinn?”

“We have time.”

They parked near the archaeological site, as Quinn was sure it was.

“You want to know what they have found?” Joey asked.

“Yes,” Quinn answered as she got out of the car. She had a feeling it was important. ‘Not the Spider Sense, exactly,’ she thought. She looked and saw that only one other vehicle.

“I hope this won’t take too long.”

“Enough time to find out what he’s looking at,” Quinn responded.

Professor Bigham Alder saw the two teens approaching. “Can I help you?” he asked.

“We were driving from Lawndale to Oakwood,” the girl with dyed brown hair in shoulder length high pigtails said. “And I saw that something was happening at this mound.”

“I have permission to investigate this site to learn more about the Pre Columbian ruins here.”

“That’s so interesting,” the girl said.

“It definitely is…”

“Quinn, and this is Joey,” Quinn said as she indicated the boy.

“I’m Professor Bigham Alder. I had started earlier this week. Usually, I do research at Lawndale State.”

“I was wondering if you could show us around,” Quinn said.
